I can't believe what I'm reading on this thread. Wow.
actually - I am impressed that we can have a civilized debate without it tunring into a name calling bit of nastiness.
We each have our own opinions. I really appreciate reading Snoochio's opinion - I am a fairly open minded person and if someone can show me that my thinking may not be the best way - I am open to changing my opinion.
That said - I am still tired of going into my grocery store and have everything in two languages - 2 years ago - it was not like that - I called my electric company last night and got the recording "for English - press one - then in Spanish it said for Spanish, please hold" huh? it should be the other way around

This money is not being taxed. It is not being reinvested into the American economy. It is leaving the country, most likely never to be seen again. That I have a real problem with.
[edit] BTW, regarding the 'polite debate' atmosphere of the thread.... that's another thing my family instilled in me: the ability to argue a point without getting hostile. Heated, yes.... maybe even a few "you're out of your f'ing minds", sure... but after everything was said and done, we'd still be able to sit down, have a beer, and laugh it off. It's nice to find some kindred spirits with a similar taste for debate .
I would just like to see some empathy for some people who really have a tough hill to climb. They are here to make life better for themselves and their families, often out of absolute desparation.
There are not solutions offered by those who exploit these humans, yet the exploitation continues. The fact that there are so many here is a testament to what it is like in their homeland. They do the $hitty jobs that none of us are willing to do for half the wage.
And many of us, find it necessary to be particularly peeved by some of the few considerations that Have been made in their behalf-like being shown where to exit/enter or where to find a restroom.
"Give us your poor, your tired, your hungry--we'll piss on them. That's what the statue of Bigotry says". Lou Reed

I think you are actually helping me make my point. I am not for the taxes leaving the country at all. It is the powers that be who benefit from our division(the working class v. illegal immigrants). We rant on about THEY not speaking OUR language. Meanwhile, it is the folks in congress who hire the Guatemalan nannies. It's the bigwig Montesanto type corp execs. who are employing the most illegals. They make sure there is an ample supply of day labor. They don't pay income taxes or social security. Bigger profit margin.
Grant amnesty-take away this advantage. Amnesty that requires certain benchmarks--vaccination(whole nuther debate), rudimentary progress in English classes, steady employment, hell-maybe even work corp internships or something.
I'm just saying provide a progressive approach to the problem, rather than dumping on the victim.
And I'll repeat the reason why we don't- There is more money in pretending to stop it than in stopping it.
Otherwise-why do we think it takes so long to build a wall ?
-or find Bin Laden ?
-or eradicate drugs ?
Must be the mexicans again.... ???

Trying to bring this back to censorship.
I totally agree with the earlier comment about how Wal Mart passes off watered down "family" versions of CDs and DVDs. Well, Blockbuster engages in the same kind of activities, only far worse. Not only does Blockbuster edit down movies to make them more "family friendly" without letting the consumer know he/she is getting a diluted product, not only does Blockbuster refuse to stock NC-17 films, but they even have a hand in censoring films BEFORE they even get to the theaters, by threatening not to stock films when they get to DVD unless they are cut for the theatrical release.
If you hate censorship, don't give the censors your money.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it

Here's a story of my childhood:
When I was a little tot I was watching the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie (can't remember which one, exactly) and at one point I think it was Michaelangelo (my favorite one) said damn and later that day I asked my mom what damn meant and she scolded me for saying the word, and then took the movie away from me until I was "more mature."
I was living overseas when the cartoons were on and our TV feeds came from England. Apparently they objected to the term 'ninja' so the turtles were renamed "Teenage Mutant HERO Turtles". Talk about weird censorship.
Funniest thing I ever saw dealing with censorship though was when I was living in Saudi Arabia. Magazines were routinely censored with a big black magic marker by the mutawa. Wired magazine had an issue dealing with censorship. There was a picture in there ( maybe the cover even) that depicted lady liberty blindfolded and gagged. The Saudi censors went further and blacked out her uncovered arms. They were incapable of getting the irony of their actions.

You guys are forgetting the key element of why you are seeing so much Spanish, and what was different more than 100 years ago that your ancestors had to learn English to survive.
MARKETING.
It's as simple as that. Marketers, radio stations, tv stations, practically everyone, is eager to get a hold of the NEW market. It's sad, but that's why you're seeing it everywhere. Capitalism strikes again!
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this

I am a graphic artist and we have Cumulus, which is an art supply source that combines many different vendors. Well, the big wigs decided that we aren't allowed to see anything that might be "offensive". They put black boxes over anyone's butt or breast.
Yet they kept the photo of the old lady with a bottle of pills and a gun in her hand. Go figure.

oleander, why and how does it say you have almost -1000000 karma??
I asked one of the mod's to give me the lowest possible number because I have/had someone targeting me. I had gone down over 15 points in a week and I was tired of the shenanigans.
You know, shenanigans is a word that isn't used enough.
