LOL...
OK, so Friday night, I'm sitting in front of my PC wondering if Live Earth has sold out yet. I live in Bloomfield, NJ (8.4 miles away from the Meadowlands, as the Google flies), so it was kinda irking me that I wasn't going, but when tix first went on sale, I'd thought my concert dance card would be full this year with just Bonnaroo. The thought of shelling out another $500 (or worse) for tickets wasn't too appealing.
So I go to Ticketmaster, and, just as a lark, check to see if there are any cheapies ($53) left. And there were. We debated it for an hour over dinner - finding a sitter was the biggie, but my in-laws jumped at the chance to watch my daughter. By the time I went back, there were no seats together, so we found 2 in the same section (133) and figured we'd hope for some understanding neighbors.
There was a carnival in the Meadowlands parking lot, but it was closed to anyone except Live Earth patrons for the day (yippie!). They opened up at 11:30, so we headed out at 10:30. We got there in about 15 minutes, filed into their off site ($20!!!) parking lots (I'm guessing what little parking they had left at the stadium was reserved for the pricier tickets).
We enjoyed the brownies I'd made the night before, but I think I screwed up the recipe, because the only thing I felt afterwards was a craving for a big glass of milk . Oh well, they were still tasty! we tailgated a bit, downed a few drinks, then hopped on a shuttle to the stadium. The carnival was a quick walk, mainly looking for gyros and fries and to see how it's changed since we went last (maybe 10 years?). Then we headed to our seats.
Section 133 is the last section of seats on the mezzanine off stage right. We noticed everyone in the section was sticking to our right (trying to get a better view of the stage, I guess), so we went to our left, where no one was sitting. We went as far down as we could and just camped there for the better part of the day. We noticed that a lot of people were running up to the box seats at the bottom of our section and taking pictures with the people there, so we figured it must've been the VIP box. Throughout the day, we saw Little Miss Sunshine, Zack Braff, Randy Jackson, Rachel Weisz, Rosario Dawson, and the singer from Fall Out Boy. We also had a great view of where the celebs did their band introductions, as well as the teleprompter they were reading from.
Slowly, we realized everyone else sitting down by us were either 1) escorted over from the VIP section, or 2) floaters, like us. It dawned on us that the seats we were sitting in may never have been on sale, but rather held up as a VIP reserve. No one ever came to hassle us, so we stayed there the whole show (with the exception of a quick walk around for merchandise during AFI and Fall Out Boy). We had some great neighbors - every time someone would pop up from VIP, we'd all put our heads together and try to figure out who they were.
I've got to review the pics, maybe touch them up a bit, but I'll be sure to drop them on the site sometime tonight!

Hmmm... DMB was the first act I stood up for. I love how they can still kid around on stage and have fun - the whole slow-motion break was hilarious!
Smashing Pumpkins was loud, obnoxious, and beautifully tight. Bullet with Butterfly Wings and Today gave me chills... I'm soooo ready for them in Voodoo!
Roger Waters was an amazing surprise. I loved the visuals (the shots of Dubbya and "mission accomplished" during Us and Them were eerily poignant). I'd always thought him to be a sour, bitter, tortured-artist type; I was pleasantly shocked to see him jumping around on stage smiling, cajoling with children! "My God," I thought, "...he's having fun!!" I think I'm going to try to get tix for one of his bigger shows.
Wow, sounds like a great time! I'm so glad you decided to go!! Can't wait to see the pix!!
I've never been a big Roger Waters fan, always fancied Dave Gilmour more, but I think he has mellowed in the last few years. I would love to see one of his concerts now. I wasn't overly impressed with what I saw of DMB, but I didn't see his whole set....and I would love to see any pix you got of his guitars ;D He plays mostly Taylor acoustics and I am a Taylor freak....
Glad you enjoyed Billy and the Pumpkins, had heard some bad things about their set....I'm looking forward to seeing them in NOLA esp after hearing their new song on the Transformers soundtrack....

Here's my Flickr set of the best pics. Unfortunately, what with the off site parking and shuttle waits, I didn't want to risk bringing a real camera in. After seeing their security, I figure I might've had a 50/50 chance of getting it in anyways. Oh well...
