...and I need to know where the best beerhouses, restaurant recomendations, quality music venues, and fun times are located in Memphis. We are making the road trip to pick up a bunch of New Belgian Fat Tire's and want to party it up Memphis style that night. I think we are going to get a hotel off Beale so we will be close to the action but do not want to go through the bad part of town. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

good luck staying out of the bad part of town. as fun as memphis can be, it's hard to stay clear of all 'bad' parts, because memphis has a shitload of shady mofos.

Well the one good thing is that (not meaning this in a bad way at all) but I will have my friend who is a pretty intimidating black guy with me. It will just look like the white boy has a bodyguard....lol. Like I said, not racial undertones (hell, he calls himself token at times just because all of his friends are white hippies or med students...lol). I think we are really interested in going to see some good blues, so any recommendations are welcome.

I would say go see Big Love, but he's on tour right now... I think the Gibson factory is in Memphis...You could always get yourself a custom Les Paul. ;D

i lived in memphis for 15 years and even though i'm a little late on this one, perhaps this'll help anyone passing through. rendezvous ribs are good, but the best bbq joints in town are central bbq on central ave, the bbq shop on madison, and a place on beale that i think is called the blues city cafe. also, a good chicken place downtown is gus's fried chicken (don't remember what street it's on, but ask around). good bars with good music to check out - the hi-tone cafe on poplar (it's across from overton park, which you should check out in the daytime - lots of free shows and heads), the young ave. deli at cooper/young, newby's on the highland strip, the high point pinch in the pinch district downtown, & zinnie's east on madison. all hours bars - alex's & printer's alley. upper scale trendy bars that don't suck include dish at cooper/young and swig downtown. check out the gibson lounge downtown too. beale and graceland are what memphis are known for, but these places are where locals go (and trust me, beale and graceland aren't that special - good to see once and then never visited again). a good rule of thumb for bars, stores and restaurants is to stick with midtown, certain areas of downtown (the pinch district, south main), and the areas around the university of memphis and rhodes university. if go east of the university of memphis, you're probably going to start getting bored. but memphis is amazing and i miss it, so let me know if you need any more advice.
oh yea, and about the blues - there are tons of places you can just walk into and find quality blues. i prefer the poplar lounge and i've heard some good licks at the map room too. some really good local bands to check out are the blake miles band, freeworld, full circle, lord t & eloise, dianne price, rainy day manual, and literally hundreds (if not thousands) of others. bb king's is ok too(i used to date the owner's daughter - tommy peters, ask for him).
oh, and you definitely have to check out raeford's...trust me on this one. ask a cab driver or a local. the area kinda seems shady, but i promise it's safe and that bar is priceless.
