Due to a spark in discussion in a previous thread, I figured it might be worthwhile to get everyone's input on it. I don't think I really need to state the topic... so have at it.
Personally, I think it's absolute bogus the negative attention he's getting. Sure, fans can boo that's their right. Well, so long as fans can boo, Barry can still play baseball (and does so quite well, as a matter of fact). It's not even the fans that bother me, though. It's Bud Selig. He and rest of the MLB should be disgraced by the way he is handling the situation. By not even having the guts to applaud when he sees the record being tied or even cracking a smile, he does more than if he never even showed up to the game. It's an insult to the record, which has been tied whether you like it or not. Barry has his 755 homeruns with his bat, performance-enhancers or not. Until he is proven guilty of his accusations and banned from the league, his record shall stand in my opinion.
i gave up on baseball after the strike. a bunc h of millionaires for playing a gae whining and going on strike. friggin crybabies. and they were hardly athletes. they were mostly fat and sloppy until the steroids came around. i wouldnt applaud barry bonds, mark mcgwire, or sammy sosa. they should have all of their stats erased. they cheated and everyone knows it. i wish all the temas in baseball would have gotten together and agreed to intentionally walk bonds for the rest of his career. but i guess it hardly matters if they use steroids and corked bats when mlb juices the ball in addition to that. hey whatever makes it interesting and keeps people paying attention. its the same reason the nba lets everyone travel and carry the ball/double dribble. its all about the exciting homeruns and dunks. i applaud selig for not celebrating a cheater getting one of the most coveted records in sports an i hope he is succesful in getting bonds record wiped off the books. but like i said i gave up on baseball and boxing years ago so i dont really care what happens.
bonds, mcgwire, and sosa will all be in the hall of fame with thier bogus records and pete rose wont be there. how anyone can support mlb after witnessing a travesty such as that is beyond me.

^^Pete Rose performed illegal activities just like you are accusing Bonds, Mcgwire, and Sosa of. Different activities, same illegality, same consequences.
Bonds deserves all the attention he's getting, positive and negative. I think they need to put *'s by his and McGuire's records. It is a disgrace that the MLB hasn't done anything about this other than increase the penalties for getting caught. And it doesn't quite seem fair that Rose gets banned and nothing has happened to these other guys. They should all be banned. Cheating is cheating. Bottom line.
I, for one, would boooooo Bonds. I'm a Philly fan after all
pete rose violated some rules. i dont know that he cheated. what he did didnt help him hit any balls or steal any bases. these obvious steroid users are a disgrace to the game. if anything they should also be banned and their records should be erased.
I got to see it on TV when it happened, and I was absolutely stunned when after it happened they announced a special message on the Jumbotron congratulating Barry Bonds by
Hank Aaron
That was truly a class act. Barry Bonds may be the home run champ, but he'll never be in Mr. Aaron's league.
And Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame for what he did as a player, but never be allowed to have an active role in baseball due to his gambling habits as a manager.
My distaste for Bonds has nothing to do with steroids or "cheating". It has to do with the fact that the man is one of the most unpleasant human beings I have ever seen. I can put aside the steroid issue because the use of steroids is an attempt to make yourself better (albeit an unfair way), while Pete Rose betting on baseball calls into question the integrity of the game. Gambling is the cardinal sin of baseball. Barry Bonds broke NO RULE because at the time of his use baseball had no rules concerning steroid use. That being said I will merely wait a few more years for A-Rod to break Bond's record and see if Bonds is as classy as Hammerin' Hank was last night. Somehow I doubt it...

^^See, according to Bonds (which I admit, doesn't mean a whole lot right now...) he claims he would without a doubt be in attendance and respectful if/when someone comes up and breaks his record in the future. I don't know if I believe him about it, but we shall see I guess...
ya know - I have to admit - I don't watch baseball - I don't follow baseball at all - but when I saw the news this morning about it - I was interested just because ya'll had been discussing it - so I sat down and watched the story. This is the only thing that bothered me -
after he hit the homerun - took his applause and congrats from people - he left and did not stay to finish the game - WTF? I mean - come on - he is part of a team - it is not all about him - this was in the 6th inning, right? aren't there 9 innings in a game - he is so full of himself that he could not stay for the rest of the game - even to just support his teammates from the dugout???

^^I was under the impression he just stopped playing in the game, not left entirely though... I could be wrong, I dunno. I'm not surprised that he stopped playing rest of the game... I mean the emotional impact of hitting that homerun, on top of the fact that I doubt any pitcher would actually pitch to him rest of the night, rather just intentionally walk him and submit themselves to massive boo's from the SF home crowd...
Bonds is getting old, or... old in the sports world, atleast. He's got a bummed knee and a brace on an elbow. He's missed several games this season due to injury, and honestly I wouldn't expect him to play the majority of the games rest of the season. The Giants suck as a baseball team. They basically already have eliminated themselves from playoff contention, this entire season pretty much was about Barry getting the record to them. They might say "well, we suck and are losing most of our games... but atleast we have the Home Run King on our team"
I may be wrong - he may have stayed - the impression I got fro the news story was that he left tho - like I said - I don't follow baseball at all - so I would have no idea what team was doing well at all - LOL

completely agreed.
and, there is no doubt that Pete Rose should be in the hall of fame. His stats are easily regarded as some of the best of all time, but he isn't in the hall of fame because he bet on baseball games. I thought it was the Baseball Hall of Fame, not the Character Hall of Fame.

Exactly. The moment they elect McGuire or Bonds into the hall without putting ol' Charlie Hustle in there, is the moment I boycott all things baseball.
Pete Rose will never go into the Hall of Fame due to what I said in an earlier post. Gambling is THE cardinal sin in baseball. If you put Pete Rose in the Hall than you have to put in "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and the rest of the 1919 Chicago "Black" Sox in the Hall. Betting on baseball calls into question the integrity of whether the game is actually a competition or merely a way for gamblers to assure themselves a winning bet. In the NBA, any Phoenix Suns fan has to wonder if they were robbed by a dirty ref who had a vested financial interest in the outcome of the series due to gambling. IMO what Pete Rose did is far worse than any allegation made against Bonds, McGuire, Sosa, et al.

i'm kind of mixed on this. on one hand it seems the boos are justified, but on another it seems like he's just a lightning rod for a decades long problem of shadiness and is getting a lot more hate than he deserves...
i was there when he tied the record, and i just stared in open mouth amazement, didn't cheer OR boo. just watched. was a pretty neat spectacle to behold.
(when he thanked his dad and broke down after breaking the record, i just about choked up!)
