Hmm... my internet is screwed up. I get the Pittsburgh trailer instead.
Hal Holbrook is in it!!! My brother met him once in an airport in Florida (Tampa/St.Pete, I think). My brother actually had the nerve to tell him he didn't really like any of his movies. I would've like to have seen Hal's reaction. Tee hee.
Thanks for posting. I had never heard of it before and it sounds good! I love biographies/memoirs, so I'll be hitting up Borders this week!

I almost bought this book a few weeks ago but didn't for some reason. Then I saw it was being made into a movie. It's going to be my next book purchase.
Sean Penn and Emille Hirsch will be on Oprah tomorrow today to discuss the book/film for any interested (That is if you can stand to listen to Oprah's constant interruptions.)

It is quite an adventure story and Jon Krakauer makes it even more intriguing as he has done with so many other stories. It is a must read for anyone who walks in the wilderness.

My mother (who, on the side, does film reviews) just saw a screening of this, and she really loved it. Sounds like while the book was very evenhanded regarding McCandless's deeds, whether he was a hero or just a selfish kid, the film is very biased towards him being a hero. Yet the film makes up for that with a great script, brilliant actors and wonderful cinematography. My interest is piqued.
I am going to an advanced screening tomorrow, and I am really looking forward to it. I have not read the book, but have the basic gist of what happened.
From what I have heard already, I think that you are right on steveternal. I will let you guys know. Also they are doing a Q&A with Emile Hirsch (lead actor) after the screening, so I will try to come up with something smart to ask. I actually think that the kid is a good actor. I thought he was good in Girl next Door, which was a pretty good rip off of Risky Business.
As many of may be aware, I am dying to see this movie. It was suppose to open nationwide this Friday (10/5) but I can't find it anywhere. Not this week or anytime in the future.
Anyone know where it might play in M'boro/Nashville? I can't believe it's not playing anywhere with all the publicity it got (incl/ Oprah.)
Edit: I've searched a LOT and no one shows it listed anywhere in TN for the entire month of Oct or early Nov. The website now says limited release Oct 5. Maybe I'll have to wait for DVD
So has anyone seen this yet? Biglou and I (finally) just saw it last Friday. I'm about halfway through the book also. I've been reading reviews and message boards about it, and I'm surprised at how many people didn't "get it" - that it was a pointless film about a stupid rich kid. I loved it and could have watched another hour at least.

I saw it with three other people - one who had read the book and two who didn't. And then I also had read the book. The two of us who had read the book LOVED it. Those who hadn't, liked it, but weren't quite as into it.
Either all the theaters are not showing it or they all waited until I was in India and snuck it past me. Either way, looks like I won't see it in the theaters. Still amazed at how many people couldn't find a showing with all the publicity the movie received.
I saw it with dcbee. I read the book several years ago.
I thought it was beautifully done, I don't think he was completely shown as a hero... he was shown as loved by most everyone he met on his journey, but he was also shown as holding lots of resentment, doing some foolish things and at somes seeming more juvenile than I remember being at 22. All in all, I think they really humanized the character.
I'll admit it, tears were shed during the movie and after I had a very strong urge to sell my wordly posessions, buy a camper, paint rainbows all over it and head to Slab City...
I found a showing at the Green Hills theater. Going to see it today. I don't know why the showing didn't show up in any searches (fandango, Moviefone, yahoo or the "Into the Wild" website) but I I found it regardless of how hard they made it.
