I was just told by my employer that I have to cut off my fingernails. I have them long on my right hand, because I play classical and fingerstyle guitar. I've been doing this for more than twenty-five years.
As you might guess, this is very upsetting. I honestly don't know what I am going to do. This is a very good job that, up til now I was happy with. The pay is good, benefits are good and it is a growing company with much opportunity for advancement.
They do not realize that asking me to do this is to to take away something that gives me great joy. They are essentially asking me to do away with a major part of who I am. This is a major dilemma, and really unfair to me.
Yes it is an image issue. And yes the women at work have long fingernails. And yes it is total BS. I think they believe with the nails long on only one hand it looks like I do coke or something.
I believe I'm just going to have to work around it. I'll cut them when I know someone that would notice is coming in, which is actually rare. The good news is they grow back real fast.

If it were me, I think that I would politely point-out the fact that the women you work with are allowed to have long fingernails and that the only discernable difference between them and you is your sex. I would then mention that some people might see that as sexist and a lawyer might see it the same way.
Most companies, when threatened with legitimate legal complaints, will back-peddle like crazy to avoid a discrimination law suit.
I worked at Wendy's when I was younger. My friends and I were hardcore rave kids. One day this old redneck woman got a wild hair up her ass about one my friend's hair. She kept insisting that the manager fire him simply because his hair was blue (and under a hat, might I add). When it seemed to me that the management was giving her complaints more attention than they deserved, I stepped-in and reminded them that her hair was OBVIOUSLY not naturaly blonde. Then the issue became about which store-bought colors were acceptable and which ones weren't...and how showing preference to one color over the other seemed inherently wrong to me...as it might to "others". Oddly, that was the end of that particular situation.
Just an idea.

I could probably win if I used some of these arguments and threatened legal action etc., but I am trying to get promoted. This job has given me a unique opportunity to advance very quickly. If I make a big issue out of this, I'm pretty sure my chances at advancement would be shot to hell.
This is such a stupid thing, I don't even grow them very long and I keep them well manicured.

Hilari/The Log Lady is a lawyer and she has been trying to find legal precendents in support of your argument and, while she is having trouble findinging anything "concrete", (she may correct me if I'm wrong but) it seems like one of the arguments against you is in the "grooming" spectrum (more related to men with long hair than long nails). If your nails are clean and well manicured, that appears to bolster your position as far as I can tell.
Regardless of what you decide, good luck.

I have seen ppl (99.9% women) with nails so long it's gotta be debilitating. I always wonder how they wipe their ass. I'm sure they have jobs. How they hell would they even try to use a computer?
Sad to say, most of us have to conform. Work is icky.

this issue is indeed strange.. if you were on good terms with your management, and they know the reasonings behind the long fingernails, I would hope that they would be understanding as long as your fingers were clean and neatly groomed. I really hope that they come to their senses and everything works out for you!!

sucks that the job is making you cut your nails, but maybe you could request that if its necessary to cut your nails that they can expense it. free manicures for life!
