I had to close tonight at work (upper west side in nyc), but it didn't go so well. about the same time I was about to close the doors (barely anyone had been walking by our store for the last 15 minutes) a cop walked in and says "we're going to need you to close shop and leave within five minutes." I obviously asked why, and he said "all I can say is that you do not want to be on this block right now and we need everyone to evacuate immediately."
he totally refused to let me know why. I understand if it was confidential or whatever, but having no idea what was going on though my life was in danger definitely freaked me out, and probably more so than had I knew. I wasn't able to even close the registers, but I looked outside as we were trying to get things together quickly, and both sides of the block were all caution taped. there were cops and cop cars all around, an ambulance, and a fire truck or two, and a couple of news vans were set up just outside the caution tape. when we were leaving, the cops were directing all people out of the area and yelled at anyone walking on that block. after I shut the gate, the cop who came into our store escorted us outside the caution tape.
needless to say, I was pretty freaked. luckily I stay cool under pressure, but I want to know what was going on. if anyone in nyc knows or saw anything on the news (I've been searching and can't find anything online) please let me know.

DEFINITELY not a movie. they post signs about movies bein filmed a week in advance. and it's more of a hassle rather than an evacuation.
my manager and I still still haven't found anything about what was going on! it must be top secret, because these things are usually all over the news in nyc.

Something was going down yesterday because they shutdown the subway tracks where I work in Astoria (N,R,Q, and 7) . The weird thing was no one knew why it was shut down.
October 26, 2007 Street Cart Robbery Caused 4/5/6 Subway Delay Ah, some details about the robbery that prompted the 4/5/6 subway lines to be essentially shut down during rush hour. Yesterday, we heard that an armed robbery suspected was in the tunnel between 116th And 125th Street along the Lexington Avenue sign, so NYC Transit shut down power to the line so the police could purse the thief.
The Post reports that a "thug robbed a street-cart food vendor on 116th Street and Lexington Avenue and dashed into the nearby No. 6 station" right before 4PM. Cops did follow him and try to search for him. They even brought in two K9 units!
But the thief still got away - apparently there are "at least three levels of tunnels" in that area. We're pretty sure some straphangers would have gladly joined in the search to track him down - tempers were boiling on those crowded, stalled trains. The unfortunate thing is that it seems some people waiting for trains along the line had no idea there were delays - hey, Transit Authority, we thought you were going to do a better job with alerting people to these issues! We have to credit the conductor on the uptown 6 train we were in (25 minutes to go two stops!) - he told us the police were searching for someone and strongly suggested we take other subway lines if possible.

doesn't all that sound like a lot for a street cart roberry?
I think that might have been earlier though, because my mom had already known about it just as I was leaving work. plus that was on the east side... would they shut down the westside too?
btw, I live in astoria just off the N!
I'm going with steveternal's theory... gotta keep it hush hush
