It's a hilarious film, i'll give it that much. However, I feel like it failed in it's objective. I could be wrong about this, but I think that they were hoping to create a movie similar to Michael Moore's.... only without the ignorance and bias that is Michael Moore. They tried to use comedy to relate to the Americans and inform them of all the ridiculous people that are Americans, but the majority of the viewers I feel saw the movie and laughed their ass off at what the random Americans were saying, rather than noting how ridiculous it is that there are actually people in this country who still believe in some of those things.
My friend was at the rodeo in Salem where he sang the national anthem... he described it as absolute mayhem. There were legit riots both inside and outside as a result of his "prank"if you will. I saw that scene and where it was located at (15 min from my hometown of die hard rednecks) and immediately thought "wow... he's still alive to release this movie?" I think Cohen wanted to expose the world to the present intolerance, but instead had the world laughing at it.
I don't know if any of that made sense or not... I'm sorry if it didn't.
^^ Made sense to me, and I think you are right. We just rewatched this a couple of days ago, and I was completely baffled by some of the things that people said. I even commented at the time on how amazed I was that these were real people who really believe the things they were saying. (It was actually in the rodeo scene that I made the comment.) I think that a couple of times during it, we both made comments like, "And people wonder why people hate Americans." But I agree that a lot of people probably missed that.
And karma for calling Michael Moore ignorant and biased!
late review I know, but i seen this film tonight and its maybe the funniest thing i have ever seen in my life. I need more of this stuff
yeah, it was great and a lot of people did miss the point of the movie which was to point out the biased motherf's that are still out there. i think Da Ali G Show does a much better job of pointing out these issues and personally, I think Da Ali G Show is more fun to watch than Borat because of the variety of characters.
HBO played Borat and then the Ali G show all night last night. I did note the ignorance and i guess thats what i found funny, being from kentucky i see alot of that.

ali g and the movies he made for that character are way better than borat...much nastier and raunchy actually
borat is a great teaching example of what satire actually is...i teach high school and most dont know what the point of the movie was and that he himself is actually a jew....they know what satire is now ;D

Borat plays upon the bias we all carry. Sasha Baron Cohen has done this on his series Ali-G in a very effective manner. I am always surprised how he gets very influential people to belie their inherent bias on the Ali-G show. I think he is running out his thread there because people have become aware of his trick. I understand he had enough material from the Borat experience to create at least two more films. I felt some of it was over the top but for the most part, the gag is on us. The character, "gets" to people by having them explain "his" ignorance. When they do so, they reveal their own. I think it is an amazing trick and is the genius of Cohen's creations. Of course there is the art of editing involved here as well.
You mean the point wasnt so we could see him and his manager wrestling in the nude????
Nah, I agree, Cohen is a master at making people say things they never would dream of saying around "Americans". Its his innocent/almost childlike aura that I think leads people to let thier guard down and say things...
Yeah i think his charachter borat is much more believable than ali g. He tried his ali g on Andy Roony and got shut down. The nude wrestling had me crying and i love his bits on the fashion industry, it amazes me how he gets them to contradict themselves at every other sentence, but i guess editing is used liberaly.
