Brownstien came out on bass for 2 songs at umphreys this past Friday, other than that is was an ok show. BUT the Brothers Past after show at BB Kings was ridiculous they played from 1230-315 strait, no set break, played "Lets Start A Gang" which i havent heard in maad long and the energy was just pumping throughout night. Toubab on sat was prob the best toubab show iv ever seen the new material is awesome, and the older songs are completely perfected best encore ever!!!!! Becca know what I'm Talking about
Saw DSO, Lotus, and Whitewater Ramble yesterday up in Copper Mountain as part of their Sunsation free music series. It was the last day of the season for the boarders/skiers, so it was really jumping. Man...I'm sunburnt and shaky today, but I had a blast. :-P
Saw Neko Case Friday night at the Hi-Tone. Really good show. She said she was feeling under the weather and joked about how she was hallucinating, but you couldn't really tell. She and her band rocked out. The weather outside was terrible, but I think everyone had a blast inside.

just got back from the Copper Sunsation Festival. Caught Steve Kimock and Franti & Spearhead on saturday which was off the walls. My sister and her husband had a sick setup in a condo looking right out on the stage and were bouncing on the beds, throwing back pina coladas, it was a classic night. Yesterday I caught the end of Lotus and then Dark Star played a mash up of songs. It was a great weekend, the weather was perfect, I couldn't have asked for anything better.

I thought about going to that show, but I didn't as I caught the Decemberists on Wednesday and had friends in town Saturday. Glad to see another Memphian on here!

Just bought tickets for The Books at the 9:30 Club in DC. My future self tells me it was awesome.
My present self agrees. The show was awesome! My wife and I showed up at set time and there happened to be a space literally right up front and center. We had the absolute best spot in the house. The opening act, violinist Todd Reynolds, set the mood well with a relaxed, playful demeanor paired with challenging, intense music (and videos). Finally Paul and Nick took the stage and played a tight, exciting 80 minute set. The videos they created for their songs were all very well done, ranging from the beautiful to the humorous to the disturbing to the fascinating. This tour of course was in support of a soon-to-be-released DVD of all these videos, and I for one look forward to it. The show was not without its faults, and the most obvious was the sound. The vocals were particularly buried in the mix, even moreso than on their albums, and the acoustic instruments suffered from the same fate. Overall it was a tremendous musical experience, and the rare The Books show is not to be missed.
I didn't write down the setlist, but it included: Tokyo Take Time Don't Even Sing About It The Future, Wouldn't That Be Nice? That Right Ain't Sh*t Be Good to Them Always Smells Like Content It Never Changes to Stop None But Shining Hours If Not Now, Whenever An Owl with Knees Meditation Outtakes 'Cello Song (Nick Drake cover) and 2 new compositions
EDIT: hippiehippieshake, how'd you like their Philly show? I assume it was the same, yes?

their philly show was grrrrrrrreat! it was my second time seeing them. i wrote down the setlist. . . (it wasn't much fun though because after seeing them once, i had already kind of decoded the little code letters and numbers that were on the screen for each song, so i knew what was coming and they covered cello song at the previous show too. i wish they would do some more nick drake. it was really good)
all a's (abc) owl with knees (ok) if not now, whenever (if) don't even sing about it (45) 'cello song (d) 8 8 frame (8) the .. classy pickle? i thought that's what they said, but i'm definitely wrong... lol. that was the song that todd reynolds and paul's brother came out to play tokyo (t) . . . i wasn't too happy with this... i don't know why they didn't play the song instead of making us watch the music video. as i recall, they actually played it last year. it never changes to stop (it) meditation (m) be good to them always (b) smells like content (slc) take time (tt) that right ain't sh*t (oy!) encore: the future, wouldn't that be nice (f)
all in all, a really good show. i thought todd reynolds' music was a great opener. similar enough style to the books to be relatable to the audience members, yet different enough to get fans thinking about a different genre.

Last weekend I drove to Atlanta with some friends to see Trans Am. The night before we left Ben, my friend who organized the outing, mentioned Estrdasphere would be playing at the same club the next night. I immediately purchased tickets.
Friday night at The Earl was an evening of threes and twos. The first group we saw, The Psychic Paramount, is a trio that hails from New York City. Their heavy psychedelic rock sound was reminiscent of Pink Floyd though no words were injected in their song. I'd never heard anything from them prior to the show and I was pleased to hear what they had to offer. The next group to open was Zombi, a duo out of Pittsburgh. As the name may imply, their sound makes me think of a Romero movie's action sequence; though some tracks may not follow the same formula. Again, I was glad to add more new music to my listening rotation. For the final performance Trans Am, a threesome future electro experimental rock outfit out of Bethesda, Maryland (wow thats a mouthful), put on a phenomenal show. If you're unfamiliar with the group, you should check out the track Futureworld (video on youtube) to get you started. I think any of the three bands would be good adds for Bonnaroo; each one brings a unique sound that would mix well with the vibe.
Saturday night, also at the Earl, was an evening of ensemble. The Goons of Waxing Gibbous out of Atlanta, Ga started out the evening with an interesting stage performance... honestly I'm not sure what was going on, but it involved a guy on stilts, various masks and costumes, and random spastic shaking best i can remember... honestly I had a pretty good buzz going so none of that may be true. Along the lines of Mr.Bungle and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum , TGOWG certainly have something different thats far from mainstream. Now to the band that blew my freakin' mind, Estradasphere. Touching several genres of music from gypsy metal to jazz, this ensemble from Santa Cruz, California is something to be witnessed. I'm serious, go check their site now and see if they're coming to a town near you. They will not disappoint. I had heard plenty of live material from them before witnessing in awe what they're doing. You can listen to their newest album in full by visiting their website (spoiler alert: it's bad A55). IMO, Estradasphere is right for Roo too!

tokyo (t) . . . i wasn't too happy with this... i don't know why they didn't play the song instead of making us watch the music video. as i recall, they actually played it last year.
Well, they had to take time to re-tune their instruments, and had to do something for intermission. I think it's very admirable that they care enough about the sonic quality to do that. I mean, how many rock shows have you been to where they do more than just a quick pitch-check between songs? It speaks to their sophistication and dedication to their craft. But with that said, I see what you mean-- I'd have loved to have heard that tune live. The video was great, though.
Saw Umphrey's McGee at Penns Peak in Jim Thorpe PA last night. A fun time but not one of the better shows I've seen them play. The show just lacked the flow that they usually have, nothing was really turned into a monster. The venue was amazing though. I did get to hear a couple of songs I hadn't heard that I've been chasing for awhile so that was cool. After having seen them put on one of the best shows I've ever seen in Northampton last week, this was a bit of a let down. It also makes me realize that these guys so rarely play a bad show that I have some pretty high standards for them. Overall, solid show but nothing amazing. Pretty standard.

i agree that it was admirable that they retuned, but i think they could have done it for a different song, like they did at their show last year. i think they did it for the 'meditation' one, which was way more visually-based than musically and retained its entertainment without them onstage. tokyo was the favorite books song of a few people i was with, and as they hadn't seen the books in concert before, they were somewhat disappointed that they didn't get to hear them play it live.
but hey, the books are awesome no matter what. i wish more of their lyrics were online. so beautiful.

The Undisputed Truth Tour stop in Madison on 4/20 was as awesome as expected. Brother Ali headlined, Psalm One & Longshot from Chicago stole the show, Trama wore a Brewers throwback jersey, and DJ Snuggles showed why he's one of the premier djs & beatboxers on the planet.

I went to the New Dark Ages Bake Off last Friday and saw the Lindsay rip it up. They had some crazy fuzzed out guitar riffs, damn good rock n roll and damn are the Lindsay good. I really can't say enough about them, you should all go order there CD.
They also had a raffle for a nice big couple feet high water pipe...too bad I didn't win that.
saw one under at the early bird gathering. they are amazing. i heard them at harvest jam but it was nothing like this. they tore the place apart. the whole weekend was amazing. the weather was perfect. 70s all weekend and not a cloud in the sky. you could see the whole galaxy at night. there were shooting stars everywhere. just a perfect weekend. if you get a chance to see one under definitely do it. and go to nelson ledges! its the best venue in the world!
Saw the Books in Atlanta, last Friday, great show. Thanks for the decoding of the videos, hippiehippieshake. And Steve, you could buy the DVD at the show, it was only $15. Fun show, a relaxed yet intense atmosphere.
I have Arcade Fire coming up, but I am on the Fence about Modest Mouse. I guess I just need to listen to their new album more to finally pull the trigger on the tickets.

Went and saw The Black Angels with Vietnam a few weeks back in Detroit, and it was amazing, really stoked to see The Black Angels at Bonnaroo this year...
