Who gives a fuck if Tom Waits is mainstream or not? If more people like him, then great. They should. He's an insanely talented person who deserves all the fans he can get. I was glad to see Arcade Fire, My Morning Jacket, and Wilco on SNL. It actually got me to tune in. And if anyone deserves to be exposed to a wider audience, it's those bands. The ones who make real music. And even though those bands have been getting attention from tv, commercial radio still completely ignores them. They'd rather stick to playing fucking Miley Cyrus.
Well the last time he toured at least in Nashville you picked up a will call ticket and were escorted inside by security. Someone posted earlier about being offered a 1000 apiece for tickets in 06. Those folks would fork out 300 to go to bonnaroo Friday night just to see Tom.
Yeah, I was offered a grand a piece for my tickets to the Waits show at the Ryman in Nashville... Trust me, if he was there, he could sell a minimum of 2500 tickets by himself

Wow, holy poop! I didn't know Mr. Waits had such a devoted following - that's nuts. I don't think there's any musician I'd pay that much to see, unless someone managed to figure out a way to bring people back from the dead.

I checked out the Superjam late and missed intros...the only person I could recognize was the lead guy in Gogol Bordello (which IMO was the best show of Roo 08)...
it was incredible. It made me want to get up front for gogol bordello which I did. Before seeing this set I wasn't even sure I was going to see GB at all.

I was really disappointed. I dunno, I just don't really like Gogol Bordello so to basically see them with Les Claypool as a backing bass player wasn't too special. I didn't even know Kirk Hammet was there for most of it cause he didn't do too much. Oh well.

This^^^ I really don't get why a band that was given a mid-day Saturday time-slot was basically given the entire Superjam as well? Isn't this the first time (ever?) or in a long time that someone not already at roo wasn't involved in the Superjam? What happened to the Jam part of the Superjam?

I wasn't there but read that Eddie Van Halen showed up.
And yes I would have been a tad disappointed if i left MMJ to see this. I love Claypool AND Gogol........but it just doesn't sound like I'd have enjoyed this nearly as much as the Jacket

Tom Waits/K. Brennan) When I'm lyin' in my bed at night I don't wanna grow up Nothin' ever seems to turn out right I don't wanna grow up How do you move in a world of fog That's always changing things Makes me wish that I could be a dog When I see the price that you pay I don't wanna grow up I don't ever wanna be that way I don't wanna grow up
Seems like folks turn into things That they'd never want The only thing to live for Is today... I'm gonna put a hole in my TV set I don't wanna grow up Open up the medicine chest And I don't wanna grow up I don't wanna have to shout it out [ Find more Lyrics at www.mp3lyrics.org/QpAf ] I don't want my hair to fall out I don't wanna be filled with doubt I don't wanna be a good boy scout I don't wanna have to learn to count I don't wanna have the biggest amount I don't wanna grow up
Well I got my wish. I was just really pleased with superjam though I can see how it was not for everyone. You people saying it was not a superjam though????? we had a Metallica rep, a Mr. Bonnaroo rep in Les, and Gogol Bordello as a backup band. I mean it does not get a lot jammier than what they were doing. I Think some of us are comparing just last years to this one. They were both good in very different ways to me. Personally to me Superjam is what I always look forward to most at Bonnaroo, and so far I have never been disappointed.
Technically neither was the GRAB show in 2006. Or the Herbie Hancock show in 2005 (just Herbie and his bass player, with ?uestlove backing on drums). It happens.
Yeah, it's hit or miss. Here's to next year actually being a Superjam!
Every year I have gone it has been with people already playing the fest, not really anyone from outside. Even John Paul Jones had several other gigs last year as did the Roots and Ben Harper. What superjam did you see or hear about before that left you disappointed this year?
