Phish is Friday's headliner.
We are stuck in the idea that the day's headliner must play sometime between 8 and midnight, and that no one else will play at the same time. What if they changed that up? Look, most of us agree that the Beasties are probably playing Friday, and now we know that Phish will be following them on the main stage. Well, they can't really call The Beastie Boys the headliner if the band playing after them is significantly bigger. So, they calling Phish as the Friday headliner, even though they are playing in a spot never before used by a headliner.
This may mean we'll see shows going on opposite Beasties during prime time, and NO late night shows opposite Phish. Just throwing that extrapolation out there.
I really hope all the non phish fans leave on sunday so we have more room to partaaay
It won't be much room... I'd say 88% of all the 2009 Bonnaroo attendees will be primarily there to see Phish.
The non-fans will be assimilated.
Really, you think that 88% of Bonnaroo ticket purchasers are going for the fact that Phish is playing. Please, Your arrogance is making me laugh to myself. I think I speak for many Bonnaroo attendees when I say many of us would be going regardless of who is on the lineup. My yearly highlight always come from non-headliners (except Radiohead in 06), and I expect this year to be no different. However, haven said this, you can count me as one of the non-phish fans who will stick around to see what all this noise is about, then maybe I'll understand better. Bonnaroo is and always will be much bigger than Phish!

This is great news. New headliner or not, this makes much more sense than all the talk about the Boss closing it out. I would like to see this: Fri- What stage NIN 9-11:30 Which stage Phish 12-6ish Sat- What stage Al Green>BenHarper7>The Boss> NIN Which stage Beasties Sun- What stage Elvis Costello>Byrne> Phish

^^^Slghtly different idea, epressed more clearly and eloquently.
agreed, although it's funny you spelled "expressed more clearly" wrong
Rooconteur, check the page before amigo, as much as I would like Derek Trucks I straight up asked him and they said no.....but I'll be optomistic too until its not announced...but ooh well
I think the Friday Headliner will consist of me being right. You will all applaud me until I come back onto the stage and tell you how wrong you are all for the encore.

Sunday night... Phish finishes their encore. Immediately, thousands of spunions, who've ingested more than is appropriate for driving, immediately hop in their cars to make the drive home. They are joined by the 30,000 people who normally leave before the headliner on Sunday, but won't leave this year because it's Phish, not the Boss.
Worst traffic jam ever?
Let's watch.
Why would anyone both leaving Sunday night??? Foolishness! ;D

i say that bc we already know nin has a speial spot, so i can't see that special spot being at 7 in the day time before Springsteen... that's just me though
You do realize both Wilco and Ben Harper are scheduled for Saturday as well?
yeah i do, but with ben harpe's speculated set at 11: 45, that would put him on the which. nin is way bigger than him and he will get the late night which while nin gets the late night what i think. and as far as wilco, maybe before bruce on which, but maybe before bruce on what.
also, do yall really think the mars volta crowd could fit in a tent?
In a perfect world it'd play out like this..........in the next couple weeks we would all learn that Superfly has been throwing everything they got out there trying to get the Dead to headline Friday night as sort of a nod or apology to Phil Lesh for asking him to end early last year for Kayne's egotistical ass. The Dead say yes and we all dance our asses off to the Dead and follow that up with having our faces melted by Phish.

You, sir, are a genius. I was thinking/hoping the exact same thing.
When I read the email my first thought was that they weren't considering Beasties and NIN as "headliners" and that there is going to be another add of that caliber.
I do kinda like the idea of keeping everything going on Friday. It would be nice to see a tent or Which set at 9 or 10 at night. Lots more mid-tier acts.
I do not think that The Mars Volta will be a daytime What Stage pre-headliner leading into Bruce or Phish. IMHO, they are not "there" yet.
I think that Ben Harper -> Wilco -> Bruce makes sense.
I agree that David Byrne -> Phish on Sunday looks likely.
I suspect that Elvis Costello will not be prior to Byrne -> Phish. I think since's playing "solo" he'll be closing out This Tent preceded by Lucinda Williams and Jenny Lewis (with possibly an added She and Him set).
Edit: I'll also add that I think that the only way we see Jane's Addiction at Roo this year is as our SuperJam. Very unlikely.
Elvis Costello's confirmed for Saturday (aka the most ridiculously overscheduled Roo day ever). And I think people might be a bit off about David Byrne as the preheadliner for Phish on Sunday. Could totally be wrong, but I have a feeling the What stage will be largely devoted to jam music Sunday.

There will not be another headliner added. As stated before, there are 5 "headline value" acts for only 3 headline. Phish x2, Bruce Springsteen, NIN, Beastie Boys. This already fits PERFECTLY. 3 regular headliners (probably Beastie Boys, Bruce and Phish) and 2 "special" late night What Stage sets (Phish and probably NIN). Unless it hasn't been decided yet if NIN or Beasties will be Headlining or doing the "special" late night.
Sorry to cut your dreams short but neither NIN nor The Beastie Boys are going to be playing before a headliner or on the Which stage.
So...The Dead will not be added. Jay-Z will not be added. Neil Young will not be added. Jane's Addiction will not be added (they're not big enough to headline Bonnaroo anyway...and wouldn't be a headliner improvement over Beastie Boys or NIN)
Sorry for all that but Jesus. Come on guys. Get Logical.

This is definitely how I see it. If I'm wrong, awesome. Beastie Boys were not in the announcement today because they are not a big huge deal to tons of people in the way Phish and Bruce are.
Also, this Friday & Sunday news about Phish is just incredibly ideal. I was thinking a Saturday spot for them would be kind of anti-climactic in the aftermath of the late night show. Sunday show will be the definition of climactic.

i hear ya. but i don't know man. if can they can put the white stripes on which stage, they can put anyone. right now i'm thinking beastie boys and nin are billed 3rd and 4th and on the top line because they are the late night headliners. i think there definitely could be another fri. headliner added. don't believe it will be jane's though, i guess jay-z could be likely. i don't think the dead would be added late, if they were headlining they would be on the initial.

There will be no less than 4 other acts playing opposite Phish's latenight show on Friday. It will likely be a very significant act on WHICH while Phish plays on WHAT. I'm thinking maybe Wilco, Snoop Dogg or maybe NIN.
