Band of Horses was my biggest disappointment followed by Animal Collective and TVOTR -- all daytime shows on the Which Stage. Only the latter really played hard and seemed a total victim of mixing. I could hardly hear Tunde at all; Kyp was just a little better. But we were real close and the sound was sad.
most surprising disappointment: Gov't Mule my likely disappointment: Phish on friday (but they totally redeemed themselves sunday)
some other disappointments: The Knux on thursday and ben harper on saturday
hmm I thought the Knux was the most surprisingly good show of the festival. Were you far back:?
well..let me explain...I was up for 37 straight hours driving and such from the day before, then made a bad decision to invest in some party favors...I still had a good time, but the Knux were just a little too much for me at that point ..and I didn't even catch all of their set. when it started the monsoon of thursday night we all just went back to camp and rested up for the next couple days...best decision ever

I thought Band of Horses were great. I guess I should expect more based on what people are saying...
It was one of the most relaxing, enjoyable sets for me. I layed down in the field for most of the show and enjoyed their set. Great wind down to Roo.

I was probably most disappointed with Bruce's show... maybe I'm spoiled for having seen him a lot over the last decade but this was his least exciting show that I've seen. (Including the purposely not-exciting Devils and Dust tour.) I didn't get why he kept prompting the crowd to cheer and do all the sing-a-long stuff when 75% of the people had never seen him before. Did he not realize this beforehand? It's kinda like the same complaint I've read from the Phish die-hards -- just kinda pulling the usual show, not much new or different or inspired to mark the occasion.
AC was meh too, but I think their current regime of playing mostly new stuff is also haunting their show... much better when I saw them last year at Pitchfork.
White Denim - 8/13-14 Power of the Riff - 9/1-2 Bruce Springsteen - 9/19 & 9/21 Gonjasufi - 9/24 Jay Z - 10/4 Animal Collective - 10/5 Swans - 10/10 GWAR - 10/16 New Order - 10/18 Squarepusher - 11/1 Bassnectar - 11/18 Neil Young & Crazy Horse - 11/27 Bonnaroo 2013 - ???

The "Usual show" for both Bruce and Phish are better and more special than 90% of the touring acts today. Just because we didn't get any super crazy marathon shows or setlists we wanted isn't a bad thing.
Not much new or different to mark the occasion? Bruce and Phish sharing the stage in a once in a lifetime moment that nobody would have guessed could happen a year ago was pretty special to me. I felt like I was a part of history.

This is pretty much what they've always done. It's part of why I knew there would be a town of unhappy campers at their set.

Yeah Yeah Yeah's put on a great show, IMO, with a great crowd.
My big disappointments were:
Animal Collective MGMT (compared to last year) Girl Talk (the beginning at least) Pretty Lights - like the music but the show was boring after Phish Midnite - was excited for a nighttime reggae band but they bored the crap out of me and my friends
I can't believe no one has said David Byrne yet. This was my #1 most anticipated show of the entire weekend. I got my head just right and got all the way to the front left, directly in front of the speakers. Then the show started and it sounded like it was coming from someone's car parked in bfe. The entire time I was there, everyone in the crowd was saying, "TURN IT UP!" but no one ever did. It was just sad. I had to leave because I knew he was gonna play my favorite songs and I couldn't watch them get ruined by bad sound.
Where I was standing on the right side of the stage the sound was perfect. It does suck when sounds is off in any way shape or form. But if you could hear it like I could it was by far the best show of Bonnaroo 09.
i experienced this show from just about every spot on the Which Stage and it is one of the best shows i saw all weekend. i started out up in front of the soundboard on the left, then moved to the back off the crowd. i walked from the what stage side all the way over to where the VIP bleachers are to go the bathroom, went back toward the what stage, and back over toward the VIP bleachers just having a ball by myself waiting to meet up with people before Phish. sounded great everywhere i was, one of the best sets i saw all weekend.

A usual phish show is always a good show :-) We phans sometimes forget that when we're getting nit picky about shows.
Playing with the Boss was an epic moment that I'll never forget!
Amazing: Phish, Bruce, Amadou & Mariam, Vieux Farke Toure, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Wilco, NIN Good to great: Animal Collective, NIN, Jimmy Buffet, King Sunny Ade, Tobacco, MGMT, Passion Pit, Kraak & Smack Glad to have seen: Oakenfold, Grizzly Bear, Beastie Boys, of Montreal, Snoop Dogg

WTF was up w/ MGMT playing that sh*tty elevator music mellow ass new song to end the set. You have the crowd eating out of your hand after Kids, and then: "Alright guys, we're gonna leave ya'll on a mellow note. It's a BRAND NEW SONG off our album coming out in 2010." Learn some stage presence guys!

I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone say The Mars Volta yet (that probably means I'm seriously in the minority on this one). I'm a big fan and was excited to see their set. Now, I was far away, but I was incredibly bored during their set. I'm all for jamming and musical creativity, but their songs just meander now. I enjoyed the ones they kept a little shorter, but those were definitely in the minority. My biggest regret of the weekend is leaving Wilco to go see them

you're definitely in the minority. you were probably just too far away.

Im still in awed with the Voltas!
Yep agreed. I am not a huge fan and was not really close, but loved The Mars Volta show.
I think my favorites of the weekend were Jenny Lewis and Friday night Phish.
I didn't really have a disapointing show. I knew I wouldn't like Bruce so I took that time to take a nap in my tent so I could be ready for late night ;D

My disappointment was that GIANT PANDA GUERILLA DUB SQUAD one of my all time favorite bands played at Bonnaroo and I didn't KNOW. My guy pointed to someone in front of us with a GPGDS shirt on and I got real excited and said mannn that's awesome I love those guys. A day or so later we overheard that they played. I nearly cried. It was my biggest biggest biggest disappointment in a long long time. I am still feeling it. Sigh.
that Volta show was the best I have seen them play since 2005, but like omar has said they are trying to change their style a bit because they are sick of their current sound, his interview with julia on fuse was awesome. It was great to see him say he was sick of playing the way that I personally am sick of them playing as well and that he agrees with me that there sound is stale.

Volta's shows have been like this for the whole time they have been playing, to my knowledge. I could see how a more casual fan could be disappointed with their live show, not knowing its mostly just a big jam. My biggest disappoint with TMV is their lack of a rhythm guitarist.

Another satisfied Mars Volta customer here I loved the set and thought they brought it big time....very impressed
I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name right---P.T. Barnum "As I was walking up the stairs I met a man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today I wish to God he'd go away."
