Alright, I mostly disagree with a lot of the "cynical hipster dickbag's" opinions around here, but I've got to agree with Karasko on this TruRoo guy. I just pulled up all of TruRoo's posts and here is what we have learned from this guy:
1. He is a 19 year old intern meaning he was born in 1992 2. He sat in as a Director of Operations for a Pretty Lights concert. I don't know how the music industry works, but I highly doubt a 19 year old would be allowed that much responsibility. In order to be even considered a Director of Operations in my field you're looking at 30, the EARLIEST. 3. He saw System of A Down at Ozzfest in 2002, which means he was ten years old. I don't ever remember seeing that many ten year olds at Ozzfest. 4. I'm paraphrasing here but when people were talking about Paul Simon and Neil Diamond, he wouldn't like them on the farm, but twenty years ago his opinion would have been different.
I mean, predicting Skrillex is going to be on the line up is pretty much a given and quite frankly him being billed in the top ten isn't that far of a stretch. Realistically what electronic artist would get billed above him that has a good chance of playing Bonnaroo this year. Bassnectar, Pretty Lights are pretty much out. Justice is in Europe, Daft Punk highly unlikely there. Deadmau5 seems 50/50 since he was there two years ago, so honestly there isn't much above him that has a shot at playing. Now we can argue Skrillex is garbage all we want, but regardless people will cram into a tent/stage to see this guy. Especially if he is the only EDM type music there. I saw him at a Lolla after party and motherfuckers went nuts to this guy.
So either TruRoois lying about his job, he is lying about his age or he is lying about everything. Who knows, come February I could be eating my words...
last thing I will say on skrillex, then I will no longer waste my time on said "artist": Skrillex is to electronic music as Nickelback is to rock music. That is all.
Nah. I'd say Tiesto is to electronic music as nickelback is to rock music.
In my mind I'd say a more apt analogy would be along the lines of Skrillex is to electronic music as System of a Down is to rock music. You know.. eccentric and heavy yet very mainstream.
Also, Skrillex could probably play Which. And if AC/Superfly threw him as much money as truroo suggests, he definitely WILL play Which

I was going on the basis that Nickelback makes music that people lump as rock music, even though it isn't. To me, the music that Skrillex makes is as far from traditional electronic music as Nickelback is from rock. Take each genre, remove all originality, distill it down to it's most basic qualities (three notes in the case of Nickelback, high pitched whines and bass drops for Skrillex) and you get what both of these artists produce. Sure, both bands have a few songs in their catalogs that don't quite follow that formula, but for the most part that is what has made them popular. I just think it is sad that either of these artists are what a lot of people associate with modern "rock" and "electronic". That was the basis of my analogy, though I see the validity of your point Laggy.
And while I agree it is likely he plays Which, I would much prefer him in an overcrowded tent so someone I enjoy more can play Which LN. But whatever happens, I'll be skipping Skrillex for another set; unless of course TruRoo is quacking full of poop and we are all lucky enough to dodge that bullet (I will hold out hope until the lineup drops).

Ugh.. I don't even know where to start.
First off, I can't see anyone debating that Nickelback is not rock or that Skrillex is not electronic
And I don't see how Skrillex's music is 'without originality' and 'distilled down to the basic qualities' of electronic music. The sounds the guy makes, while they may not be deep, artful, or profound, are pretty original and the guy has a distinct sound all of his own.
There is plenty to criticize the guy on, and if you don't like him, that's fine. But quit trying to de-legitimize him with baseless nonsensical comparisons.
This is the HEADLINER PREDICTION THREAD. Even if what truroo says is true, Skrillex will not be a headliner. Let's get this thread back on topic. Enough with this garbage.

And wow, you're like a walking, talking infomercial to turn people away from Pearl Jam and Ohio State, aren't you? Before you started posting here I quite liked Pearl Jam and was indifferent towards OSU, now I find myself wishing that Eddie Vedder falls down a mine shaft or that Columbus is infested with locusts
I don't have a suggestion for another genre for either artist, but putting Nickelback in the same genre as great rock artists of the present and past or putting Skrillex in with great electronic artists of the past and present just seems like it should somehow be criminal.
Either way, I definitely think both artists use the very basic elements of the genres to create popular music. Three notes played over and over is not that different from rampant bass drops to me, but maybe you hear something other than that which I hear.
And lastly, just because I can recognize a band or artist because of their sound does not mean they are original. Sure, this is a possible explanation, but it can also arise because nothing else sounds quite that bad to me. To each their own, but I don't think my claims are baseless, nor do I feel that I am de-legitimizing Skrillex. His music does that for me
All Skrillex-bashing aside, obviously we disagree, which is why music is so wonderful. We all can like what we like and move on. My point was simply that I would want to see Skrillex as the big electronic artist to the same degree that I would want to see Nickelback as the big rock act.

i'd be pretty happy with this with a few changes... The Dead instead of Further, remove Drake and add John Mayer Trio and The Parlor Mob

I can get behind this, and it seems plausible to me too. I would rather someone other than the Beach Boys honestly, but w/e. Also, I am fully sold on the fact that Phish will be there, and I do not know what that will do to your lineup with Furthur in the top 4....
I wonder if it is likely that both Furthur and Phish will play?
How does that compare to SCI and WSP both being at '11?
Nice job on that lineup though. Overall it looks really good.
NoD: (I don't want this to come off the wrong way here, Im not trying to start something)
I see you knocking people's ideas - and not much else. Which is totally fine, I see the merit in it. Hell I have posted a couple of stupid things (WTT on Which for example - dumb) and you pointed that out.
Since you seem to have a much better grasp on this whole thing than I do (and based on your post most others) I would very much like to see YOUR headline predictions. Ive been following this thread pretty closely and, unless I missed it, have not seen you make any kind of predictions.
Haha well if past years are any indication there has to be at least one major hip hop act.. Doubt we'll get Watch The Throne Dr Dre or Outkast; Drake will be there but I doubt he'll be the biggest act in the genre represented at the fest.
I say either Diddy, Tribe Called Quest, Nas, or Lauryn Hill are gonna fill that spot.. I just decided to throw out Diddy because I think he's a possibility not many ppl are talking about... Plus hearing Mo Money Mo Problems and All About The Benjamins will provide great lulz

i can dig it...like dude above me said, drop furthur...dont need them ruining any more festivals by being late and sounding shitty. but God knows if TOOL headlines again ill be there no matter what..07 was beautiful for me with tool and wsp. such a magical year...
I get that - and any prediction can have holes blown in it for some reason or another.
Yes, this thread may be a waste of time, but I kind of enjoy it. Seeing others ideas and thinking of what I would like to see, and trying to fit it into the festival. Thats the point of making predictions. I also think that it is likely that we will see more than one band in the top 4 that not only has been mentioned in someone's predicted headliners list, but has probably been discussed in this very thread. That's pretty fun to think about for me, and probably others as well.
Im just tired and rambling, but my point is this thread DOES have a point, and DOES have merit in that SOME of the headliners mentioned WILL be at Roo. Im fairly certain of this point.
And hey, if you don't want to post your prediction, I can respect that. Besides, who would be left to predict that you haven't discounted? LOL
