Speaking of which, I found that Future album to also be boring. Not tryna engage in whether or not it possesses the adequate characteristics of a rap/hio hop album etc etc- but yeah, boring to listen to
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
[Sorry for not taking the time to format a response to each point, but...
There is no formula to what makes a good rap song IMO
You defined that style as "Future-Young-Thug-esque style of Rap where it is more of a slurred singing style than actual rapping" what songs from IYRTITL sound like that? I haven't listened to that album in a while so I might just be forgetting but Drake enunciates better than anyone in rap right now
You say you are "overlooking the talent that Young Thug has at manipulating his words so that they fit into the rhythm of the music" but then say he lacks wordplay? Their shit is unoriginal yet we're describing an entire sub-genre of rap based on them? Future has been putting his personal story in every album yet there's no storytelling? Young Thung's career is damn punchline. etc. And I have no idea what hashtag rap is.
You already said their production is amazing so that's fine. If you have a problem with the way it sounds, that's cool I totally see where you're coming from, it's not for everyone. If your issue is their lyrical content, then I hope you have the same criticisms of guys like A$AP Rocky and Schoolboy Q who everyone seems to love, yet are talking about the same shit (and not really living it IMO). This idea that all hip hop songs need to be "lyrical" to be good is so archaic. Everyone drools when Thom Yorke mumbles and grunts over a song, but when it's Young Thug or whoever it's terrible and it's missing half of what makes a song good. These guys are critically acclaimed, commercially successful, and have a serious impact in music and pop culture. You don't have to like it but they fit every metric that we hold other other musicians to when we question if they're good or not.
Too much is filled with stuff like . . .
The homicide unit come into the house My cousin murked a nigga and he just got out I hang with all the killers and the robbers I pour me up some drank, say "Fuck my problems" My hood, they treat me like I'm El Chapo I keep that dog food like I'm Rilo I had the warrant in Clayco and beat the case Man I'm fresh as hell, bitch, Easter day
and
I done figured this shit out If you think you gone bite on my swag it's a virus I don my swag and I pull up on bitches dressed in all white like Miley Cyrus No, I'm not gay, I fuck bitches on bitches I whip out she suck on my private (Suck it!) Lil nigga play, I'mma catch him down bad and then stick ‘em fold 'em like a wallet I swear to God there's only one of me and these bitches 3 deep like a trident
Completely lame, like this conversation I suppose. Unfortunately for them, it's relevant to the thread regardless of our moronic opinions. So add to the conversation or wait for it to be over.

Do you hold bands to the same lyrical standards that you do rappers?
Edit: I'm not sure if that video is working (I'm on my phone). It's House of Bricks by Despot.
I've watched the music video for this a few times and each time and feel more and more surprised that I'm watching/listening to an actual Despot release.

The new Mouse on the Keys album will probably get my vote this month, it won't appeal to everyone but they are pretty incredible in terms of energy and composition.
If it weren't for the new toe album I might have placed my vote already
I would consider hip hop my favorite genre of music. I too feel like I must be losing touch though with my inability to get on board with some of these hot artists like future, migos, young thug, rae sremmurd, etc. I also cannot get into asap rocky, meek mill, or drake. I can get down with a hot track from time to time (hannah montana, hannah montana, hannah montana), but I have about a one song at a time limit with these guys.
Despite all of this, I think rap is still really exciting with what artists like joey badass, vince staples, action bronson, leikele47, kendrick, chance the rapper, and others are doing this year.
This isn't plagiarism and I am not calling the band out on it because it's two distinctly different sounds... but does anyone else think of a popular 80's song when you hear the start of Tame Impala's The Moment?

Yes. Two songs, actually. I posted this in Random Thoughts last week:
Random question about the new Tame Impala album. Does anyone else think that "Moment" sounds like "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" (Tears for Fears) and "The Way You Make Me Feel" (Michael Jackson) had a baby?

I'm so glad that wasn't just me - I hear Tears for Fears everytime it starts. I hadn't caught MJ but will re-listen.

This has been a great month of new music - the new Jill Scott album is outstanding. The last 2/3 of the album is some of her best work since her first two albums. She definitely has her own unique style of songwriting/music. Ashley Monroe's is growing on me, too. (Aside from Jason Isbell/Wilco/Tame Impala).
I can't get into the new Iron and Wine collaboration album.
Currents grew on me. I still do not like it as much as the previous albums, but it's pretty good.
Yeah I feel this is gonna be another Mumford situation at the Grammys. How Mumford won album of the year not only because of how good that album was but because of not getting recognized for the first one. In Tame Impalas case, the first 2.

Check out the Australian Hip Hop I get bashed for talking about.. It's dope. Hilltop Hoods, Bliss n Eso, Thundamentals, The Funkoars, Briggs.... Check out this collaboration if you truly appreciate hip hop. <img src="//images.proboards.com/v5/bbcode/video-preview.png" video="<iframe width="560" height="315" src=" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>" alt="Video Preview">

Pretty sure I understand, being that I called the last 3 winners.. The Grammys are the only award show that actually give the deserving artist the award. Arcade, Mumford, Daft, Radiohead... You can add Tame Impala to that list soon.

The main reason why Mumford & Sons won a Grammy for AOTY in 2013 was because Babel experienced immediate widespread commercial success. It was the 4th-best selling album in the U.S. in 2012, despite being released in September. By comparison, it took much longer for Sigh No More's popularity to spread, and Mumford & Sons was still a relatively unknown little folk band in early 2010. And as for your comment about "deserving artists", the consensus is that Babel was far from the best album released in 2012. Heck, even fun. received a Grammy nomination for AOTY in 2013. The Grammys are much more about popularity/mass appeal than you think.
Regarding Tame Impala, Currents may very well be in play for AOTY, but it's not going to win because they weren't recognized for Lonerism. Lonerism wasn't even in the discussion for AOTY in 2013, as Tame Impala was still relatively unknown in early 2013. The only act in recent memory who won a Grammy award for an album that charted well outside the top 10 on the Billboard 200 was Phoenix. And even then, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix was much more commerically successful than Lonerism, and it won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album rather than Album of the Year.

To be fair to FloridaMan, the Grammy's have a huge problem with giving artists "make up" Grammys after botching it on giving them out when deserved. See, for instance, Beck getting a Grammy last year for Morning Phase after passing on a whole career of better, more worthy albums, rather than giving it to Beyonce for what will likely be considered her best ever album (making her due for AOTY next time around).
