This month is already killing me and we have another 2 weeks with Tweedy, Vince Staples, Lapalux, Laurel Halo, Doldrums and Algiers. Not to mention Jay-Z for those with Tidal.

I'm both really surprised by how good Beautiful Thugger Girls is, and how bland it is.
When the cover came out and it was looking like Rebirth I was pretty much ready for it to be total trash. BUT I think he really pulled it off and it's a good listen. That said... it's too long. I don't want a whole album of stuff like this.
So it's better than I expected, but still a disappointing follow up to what was one of the best albums from the past couple years.

I don't exactly have high hopes for Hov
MCHG was bad. Blueprint 3 wasn't great. If he's really doing the whole thing with No I.D. that could be interesting, at the very least its not just going to be Jay rapping weak bars over a bunch of random hot producers beats.

Do we think that means that No I.D. will be overseeing or executive producing the album, or actually creating all the beats on the album?
I don't know a ton about No I.D., but my biggest complaint about MCHG was the beats all sounded dated. I'd prefer Jay-Z to bring in a ton of different production talent and get the freshest beats possible.
Having to vote early this month because in two days I am setting off on my third thruhike across the United States on the Continental Divide Trail. This album is just perfect for what I'll be doing as I hike from Canada to Mexico across Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. The lyrics also resonate a lot with me, as I just got out of a serious relationship, getting dumped for relying on her for my happiness. Really just over getting disappointed by people, and excited to be back on my own and making my own happiness. Stay real guys, I'm looking forward to coming back in November or December and playing catch up on all of the great music. Obviously I won't be voting for the next few months

Stay safe and good luck. Staying hopeful we get another thread like the AT thruhike. I still revisit that thread for the pretty pictures.

I wouldn't mind if No ID handled all of the beats. Your suggestion of Jay going for tons of different talent and getting the "freshest beats possible" scares me. IMO he hasn't played the trends well in the last 5 years or so.
Here is what No ID has been credited on of Jays recent albums:
MCHG - Holy Grail (not sure if it was his beat though)
BP3 - What we talkin bout, Thank You, DOA, Run this Town, A Star is Born, Already Home. In other words, all of the best songs besides ESOM. Granted he was working in concert with Kanye on most of those, but DOA I know was his beat, and its easily the best on the album.
American Gangster - Success, Fallin. Two of the best songs on the album again.
Watch the Throne Delux - Primetime
I've got an open mind to this. I just don't know if Jay is even good at rapping anymore.

He also had a pretty solid mix of newer/solid producers on the MCHG and none of them lived up to what they are capable of. Idk if that's on Jay, the label, or timbaland. Maybe not having Timbaland take most of the reigns is a good thing. Love him, but he's gotten pretty irrelevant imo.
I'm working my way back through all the albums that I've liked so far this month in preparation for the onslaught of the next two weeks. My current top three includes Fleet Foxes, SZA, and Sufjan Stevens.
Y'all don't sleep on this Ulrika Spacek album. It sounds like a straight up rip off of Deerhunter circa Microcastle/Weird Era. But that's why I like it so much. A few more listens and it may sneak it's way further up.

Currently in a "is this too much of a rip?" head space. I like it, but idk I'd probably just rather listen to DH.

New Big Boi is very good. I let it roll all the way through and then spotify played Royal Flush, which mad me miss Andre terribly, though. That's one of my favorite verses of the last ten years. It might be my favorite.
"That's when I broke into my Big Rube impression And I tried to enlighten but that night I learned a lesson That the morals that you think you got go out the window When all the other kids are fresh and they got new Nintendo...Wiis And your child is down on her knees praying hard up to God For a Whopper with cheese"

I agree that old school DH is the better option, but it's still a style of music that I'm very much into.

New Vince album is good but I'm a bit letdown. I expected a AOTY contender. The production is amazing, and it's fresh and new and unique. But this album could've been made by anyone. Vince is really overshadowed; i.e. his rapping is a really big letdown.

I respect your opinion but you're wrong.
His rapping is just way more concise here. He says almost as much in about 30 mins as he did in an hour with Summertime '06. He also managed to translate his cadence over to this new (and great) sound. Extremely well done in all aspects imo.

2019 Shows: 4/30 - Vampire Weekend 6/28 - Father John Misty & Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit 9/6 - Cardi B w/ Teyana Taylor 9/28 - Vulfpeck w/ The Fearless Flyers
Vince killed it with all these legit house producers. I'm playing Big Boi's "Chocolate" and "Kill Jill" on repeat. Fleet Foxes made something beautiful. SZA introduced herself to me. Sufjan took us to outer space. Beach Fossils, Ulrika Spacek, Lorde, Royal Blood, Big Thief, Jason Isbell, Marika Hackman, Amber Coffman, TOPS, Cigarettes After Sex, Anathema...
I have to stop listing albums at some point but Vince is the only album released today I've listened to yet. And there's still next Friday 😳

Booker, unreleased Radiohead, Ride's first album in two decades, Gizzard, 2 Chainz with a really solid record, Lorde trying out for headliner pop star, Big Thief also put out a really great album.
I am ready for some new Jay-Z next week. I just hate that I have to sign up for another trial of Tidal to listen to it... exclusive music turns me against the service hosting the music.
