shape of water was a beautiful film, very Del Toro. but i am pretty sure i laughed out loud multiple times during the movie b/c i thought the story was so ridiculous, and not in a good way. should not have won best picture at all. and this comes from someone who has seen pan's labyrinth like 10 times.

Also up there in the "how did this win" pantheon: Braveheart. It's a pretty watchable film if you ignore it was produced and directed by and starred a raging racist and anti-Semite, but it's also incredibly sloppy - lots of weird editing mistakes, extras in the background of battle scenes not really acting, just general basic filmmaking stuff that isn't executed well.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?
UPCOMING SHOWS 5/14 - Neil Young & Crazy Horse @ Forest Hills 6/8 and maybe 6/9 - Governors Ball 8/17 - King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard @ Forest Hills 9/4 - Pearl Jam @ MSG 9/7 - Pearl Jam @ Wells Fargo Center 9/11 - St. Vincent @ Brooklyn Paramount

Pan's Labyrinth is one of the greats. If it had won over Departed for Best Picture I would have been good with it.
Golden Globes are a lot of fun so far. Lotta good wins!
The Oscars should take note at how stripped down this show is. Keep it simple, all we want is to see famous people win awards and have fun. No sketches or musical performances or any bullshit.
Anyway now that I've said nice things I can't wait for all the podcasts I listen to tomorrow to say the ceremony was trash and Jarrod Carmichael was terrible.

Those old farts won’t ever change because of how ‘respected’ the institution is.

Glad to see Fablemans won. The trailer really did that movie dirty. I guess they thought no one would see it if people knew how emotionally raw it actually was.
Nothing against the other noms. I like all of them. Kinda can't go wrong with that group, imo.
Awards race started out with Fraser in the lead for Best Actor, but he hasn't really won much. I'm wondering if Butler really is a front-runner here or if the HFPA just gave it to him because of the hostility with Fraser.

HFPA isn't always the best predictor of awards with the exception of an inevitable sweep in one category (this year's being Ke Huy Quan). The SAG awards is more likely to be the fortune teller with individual actors.
TBH I think "The Whale" legitimizes Fraser in terms of "hey now he's back" to the degree he doesn't need the award. I wouldn't be surprised if Farrell won it - the campaigning for him has been nonstop, and the campaigning is typically how people win.
