Cause they let in the big boys in again. I mean Titanic and Lord Of The Rings had its times. When Dark Knight got nominations in the big categories it opened up a few things. Black Panther too.

Best Picture expanded mostly because Dark Knight and Wall-E didn't get nominated. But instead of nominating more mainstream hits, they've largely stuck to the same boring Oscar bait. It's a little easier for smaller critical hits to sneak in now, but it's still mostly biopics and Very Serious Dramas from major studios or their "indie" divisions. Voters have questionable taste.

Also known as the Harvey Weinstein effect. Ever since his Shakespeare in Love campaign took out Saving Private Ryan and the industry saw how effective it was things started moving in that direction and a whole sub genre was formed known as the oscar film and september to february became known as awards season. Then when his obtusely mediocre and forgettable film The Reader got in over The Dark Knight, people began to take notice that there was a shift and maybe a problem with the way things were going. The expanded ballot followed by the preferential ballot. Lots of people want it to go back to five nominees but I doubt it will happen.
After his downfall most people expected things to start moving away from that but then a mixture of #OscarsSoWhite and the changeup in membership followed by the pandemic, big movies kept getting pushed back so we were left with the streaming services and only small films.
Parasite to Nomadland to CODA. Hardly anyone had seen these movies so people stopped caring. I want EEAAO to win, but it really needs to be Top Gun. It won't be though. If Tár or The Fabelmans win then yeah the Oscars will be on Netflix or Hulu next year.

It just has to happen. Everything is aligning for it to win by having everything go for it. Huge box office success (it got butts in theaters to keep the lights on), adored by critics globally, a marvel in technical filmmaking and a swan song for Cruise as he enters his twilight years. Who knows how much longer he has blockbusters left in him after MI.
But let's be real, Fabelmans is going to win, ensuring the old guard stays in tact and the ratings will be the worst to date.
They should give the award to the best movie. They’ve lost the general audience. Appeal to the people that are still watching. Top Gun will not save the Oscars.

Agreed. I think it was enough for it to be nominated. Acknowledge it was a great crowd pleaser but I don't believe it should win just because it was a "fun" movie that was a blockbuster success and appealed to the mainstream audience. The award should go to the best movie, and Top Gun wasn't that.

Genuinely think Oscars were watched more in the past because there were fewer options of watching things on TV in general and the internet wasn't a "thing". Now you don't need to watch awards shows to know who won - it'll be on Twitter a second later. Historically it's rare that it's been more popular-movie-centered. There's "Godfather" and "Rocky" but then there's "Chariots of Fire" and "English Patient".
Back in MY day I remember when there were only like 12 channels lolz

Totally agree. This was also how we used to see celebrities. Now we follow them on Instagram.

i completely agree with you. so the audience thats left is just nerds who enjoy watching awards shows lol. which is why i want award shows to be award shows. i'm a fan of awards shows where they just have lots of celebrities in a room and they give out awards, and they don't try to do sketch comedy or live music or any other funny business. i just want to see what Billy Porter is wearing and decide with my minimal fashion sense if it's "too much" (it always is but also never is you know?)
i do hope they keep broadcasting the shows somehow for people like me that see them as an event.

I Like the live songs but no pizza party or movie theater gimmicks for me. “Regular” people don’t care!

fwiw English Patient was a massive hit for its time, made almost a quarter billie
But the shock nom has created a brewing shitstorm within the Academy because Riseborough seemingly pushed out Viola Davis (The Woman King) and Danielle Deadwyler (Till), two actresses of color that were backed by well-funded campaigns by Sony and MGM/Amazon, respectively, and were widely predicted to score honors, yet presumably do not have access to a network of powerful (and, let’s be honest, white) friends in the Academy to campaign for Oscars on their behalf.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?
UPCOMING SHOWS 6/8 and maybe 6/9 - Governors Ball 8/17 - King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard @ Forest Hills 9/4 - Pearl Jam @ MSG 9/7 - Pearl Jam @ Wells Fargo Center 9/11 - St. Vincent @ Brooklyn Paramount 9/19 - Stars @ Music Hall of Williamsburg 9/20 - Khruangbin @ Forest Hills
Yeah I figured that's the main reason this was happening, though from what I saw on twitter it was mostly Ana de Armas that was catching flak for pushing out Viola and Danielle and not Riseborough.

I know I am in the minority here, but I did not think Ana de Armas' performance was worth of an Oscar nom. But maybe I am biased because I hated the movie.

I refuse to watch it.
Let’s further sexually exploit a woman we killed and call it art.
Also read today that for the first time, A24 has more nominations than any other single studio this year with a total of 18.
EEAAO - 11 The Whale - 3 Aftersun - 1 Causeway - 1 Close - 1 Marcel the Shell with Shoes On - 1
This is of course if you count it only as single studio and not by parent company. Disney has the most with 22 in that regard when you put together Searchlight (Banshees - 9), Marvel (Black Panther - 4), 20th Century (Avatar - 3), and Pixar (Turning Red - 1)
Netflix - 15 Universal (including Focus) - 14 Warner Bros - 12 Paramount - 11 Neon - 5 Sony - 2 United Artists - 2
