Yeah I figured that's the main reason this was happening, though from what I saw on twitter it was mostly Ana de Armas that was catching flak for pushing out Viola and Danielle and not Riseborough.
One movie had a lot of controversy behind it and the other was a movie nobody ever heard of so it seemed like normal people would think thats the norm, which kind of is. But yeah, calling all your A list friends and giving them a script on how to market it and get a nod is just screaming for foul play. Its like when that random no name dj got a grammy nomination because he found the loopholes on how to even get into the process and haggled everyone til it worked.
I absolutely wish more comedies and horror were nominated.
I also think a lot of people watch the Oscar’s for the outfits!
The ability to make people of all backgrounds laugh is so overlooked. Especially when it comes to writing comedies. When is funnier when Farrelly brothers were writing all time comedy classics but had to go do Green Book to win best pic. And speaking of horror.
“I think that it’s very political,” Goth recently told “Jake’s Takes” when asked about her “Pearl” Oscar snub and the Academy’s continual rejection of horror. “It’s not entirely based on the quality of a project per se. There’s a lot going on there and a lot of cooks in the kitchen when it comes to nominations. Maybe I shouldn’t say that, but I think that’s true. I think a lot of people know that.”
“A change is necessary,” Goth added. “A shift should take place if they wanted to engage with the wider public. I think it would be of benefit, really, [to nominate horror movies].”
She was never getting nominated because hOrRoR iS dUmB but if anyone was deserving from a horror pic last year, it was her.
“Banshees” was perfectly done but FUCK did it remind me of some sad experiences I’ve had. Friendship loss is worse than any romantic breakup.
This exactly for me. I could recognize as I was watching that it was an expertly made film that is probably McDonagh's best, and while I laughed a good bit so much of the humor was lost on me from how damn depressing it was.

In terms of McDonagh formula, it's usually high comedy -> high violence. So maybe the correlation is the same since it's mild violence for one of his films.

This is the reason I haven’t watched it, yet. I have to be in a particular place to be able to deal with that kind of emotional impact from a movie.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?

When I was 14 and entering high school my tight knight group of friends from elementary and middle school just up and decided they didn't like me anymore. They joined the football team and I joined the Spanish club. Just told me not to sit with them or talk to them anymore. So I think that's why this movie made me so uncomfortable. I could relate with Colin's character way more than I wanted to.
Lots of people I know and people here loved this movie though and I think there's a good chance it could win Best Pic if it takes home the SAG ensemble or PGA win. So I'd say give it a shot because it is really good.

If something still stings, I can’t recommend it. The accuracy gave me a stomach ache, it’s so well done.

Just to piggy-back on Banshees... I think McDonagh did such a good job of balancing real, raw emotion with genuine humor, which is so hard to do in films. There was so much emotion/sadness, and not just the main two characters friendship. There was Condon character's feelings of leaving home, the brother-sister relationship that was truly heartfelt, and even Keoghan's character had that scene with heartbreak that made you sympathize with him so much. But then there's also SO many fking hilarious parts throughout the movie. I've seen it three times now and keep picking up on little lines and subtle things that just had me rolling. It's just a really well done movie and I hope it wins. But yeah, I could see how it could be a tough watch for some depending on what strings it pulls at.
Some things both Banshees and EEAAO have in common that bodes well for a Best Pic win is 1) film editing + directing noms and 2) Every member of their main-billed cast nominated in acting. I'd be very surprised if neither of these films won ensemble at the SAGs. The Fabelmans has the SAG ensemble but didn't get in for editing, and it also had a bad showing for the BAFTAS which has a lot of crossover voters.

Not for nothing, EEAO came out in MARCH. If any of the other noms came out 10 months ago they would be long forgotten in favor of any “awards season” movies that dropped Nov - Jan. EEAO deserves to win for a million reasons but that’s a big one.
I think it may be one of best movies I’ve seen in my life.

Definitely one of my all time favs from this century. And I think this film has just as much a case to win as any other film this year. I mean people are saying how Top Gun saved movies this year, but the thing is as a legacy sequel it was always going to make a lot of money, even if not as much as it did. EEAAO is more of what the industry really needs right now. Original $25 million dollar films making back three times their budget. The Fabelmans I don't think even made back half of what it cost.

How is "Elvis" nominated for Best Picture? I saw it when it came out and it was one of the worst things I've ever seen, and I've liked a couple Baz movies in the past!

I watched it and was like "man this is so much fun, I'm having a great time watching this movie"
Edit: only thing I didn't like was Tom Hanks' stupid accent
it was great though in that it made me more better hate the character as we were supposed to, and im pretty sure he did a good job at nailing the real fake accent he had

I still plan to catch The Fablemans and Women Talking in theaters this weekend. Then I’ll have seen all 10 and will probably rate them.
But I agree, Elvis was pretty trash IMO. Tom Hanks’ performance and accent did NOT work. And I HATE voiceover. It’s such a bad and lazy thing to use in a movie and the fact that it was all centered on Tom Hanks’ character and performance was mind-boggling stupid to me. It was also long as fuck and never once did I really feel a connection to “Elvis” even though Austin Butler does a pretty good job imitating him. I never felt or connected to any of Elvis’ struggles, drugs, etc. (Whereas performances like Joaquin as Johnny Cash or Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles were way more interesting and inpactful).
Honestly, the only bits of the movie that were interesting were the scenes at “Graceland” as they did a great job capturing the estate and the decorations and making it seem like the used the actual location.
Also, I did a rewatch of EEAAO and they should get some sort of new award simply for using dynamite subtitles that were actually readable. It was honestly one of the first times in my life the words didn’t blend in or get lost due to timing or speed. FYI, they use a yellow font with a black outline so that the subtitle shows up and is readable on dark and light scenes and backgrounds.

Great point about the subtitles in EEAO!
It’s weird out of all the people they could’ve cast, they picked one of the most recognizable actors and threw him in bad prosthetics. There was no need to have Hanks there, and it was like bad theater.
I loved Triangle of Sadness. So weird and hilarious. Could never tell what was going to happen next. Fred Again needle drop was superb.
All Quiet on the Western Front. This was well done. Technically well made film, but I've never been partial to war films. As brutal as one would expect.
Rewatching Nope. and reminded how this was the greatest theatrical experience I've had in years, it should be nominated in every major category, and yet it isn't. I don't know why. I don't know if that is genre, or race, or politics. I love the shit out of this movie, though. I continue to not take the academy seriously after this series of snubs.

Yes to all of this but also, I think it's "too fun". They have their one "mainstream audiences" slot in the Best Pic category and the rest have to be movies hardly anyone outside of film buffs would see. It would've had to have been the most undeniable hit with audiences, box office, and critics to get nominated.
I rewatched it recently too and forgot that the tech guy is one of the teens from The OA - that was a real "holy shit time has passed" brain fuck.
