Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
again i dont think its about who has the most raw skill. its about who you would rather see at this particular show. not that ben can tear it up like trey but that he would be great to see.
he would be great to see at the roo, but in this element, i'd personally rather see trey.
ben would be great for his own daytime set at one of the stages, but a late night superjam?? that would be like dave matthews showing up at the superjam at jazzfest last year....POINTLESS! (of course, imho)
well im one of those who likes to see dave wherever i can get him. i dont understand all the dave hating. its good music. i would like to see trey and ben at superjam. and while they are at it id love to see dave in there too
this shit is gonna be insane! ! ! like everyone said superjam is usually only an hour and a half late on sunday before the headliner. this is gonna be special that they made it a late night 4 hour ordeal. who knows whos gonna play.
Wow, I have to assume that people who find the idea of Ben Harper participating in this to be laughable have not heard him wail on the Weissenborn. A Ground on Down or a Faded-->Whole Lotta Love anyone? If Ben were to participate in such a thing it would be playing his Weissenborn (Hawaiin lap slide guitar), not a guitar (which he admitedly stays pretty basic with). Ben is a soul-searing first rate soloist and musician with the Weissenborn. The opening to Ground on Down live often sounds like he is channeling Jimi Hendrix. I've seen Trey play "Fire" and "Axis" many times, and while he does an amazing job and its a lot of fun, he definitely sounds like Trey Anastasio playing a Hendrix song (this is to his credit imo). Trey and Hendrix are probably my two favorite guitar players of all time, but their styles are really very different. The fact is that the layout and tuning of a lap slide comes a lot closer for most players to the sound Hendrix got (a detuned guitar strung upside down) than a regular guitar.
Don't even get me started on the singing.
I would love to see either of them (two of my very favorite musicians), and can definitely understand that some would prefer Trey, but the notion that it is somehow laughable or inappropriate for Ben Harper to take on this kind of thing on is ridiculous.
I would like to agree with Ka Mai, I am a big fan of Ground on Down and is the first thing I think of when I thought of Ben doing Hendrix (not to mention the singing aspects). Also BHIC does a mean cover of Manic Depression...

Uhh...What....are you sure? THat would be ABSOLUTELY insane. Where, may i ask, did you get this information? I dont want to believe it just because of the disappointment that will come if it doesn't happen

ben instead of trey is completely rediculous.
agreed, i love ben..and i am VERY familiar with Faded>WLL. which is insane..but Trey was born for Band of Gypsy's. i would love to see "Trey Face" for 4hours channeling Jimi.

Trey is playing a show with Tom Petty in St. Louis, Saturday, June 17, the night of superjam. So to clear things up, he won't be participating and this whole ben/trey debate can end.

Somwher - Trey's rhythm section is Tony Hall & Ray Weber, who are the rhythm section of Dumpstaphunk, who are playing late night Saturday. So they are obviously coming back. So Trey can obviously come back if he wants to.

Exactly, plus he doesn't have to be there for the start of the superjam, he could always come out later in the set. It does go till 4 a.m., maybe even later.
What happens if my tee shot lands on a bird's back and he carries it out of bounds but then is attacked by a larger bird who grabs the ball and drops it in the hole? Is that still a hole in one? 'Cause that's how I'm gonna play it.
I cant believe you guys are agruing over if trey or ben harper should play guiter for the "band of gypes" idea even if it happens.
Scofield, Buddy Guy, and Bill Frisell all are much better guiter plays then either trey or ben harper and I would much rather see one of them up there.
With that being said, ill still probably be at Dr. John.
Ok so its definitely not one group, common knowledge by now I hope. But with it being 4 hours long as opposed to the shorter time slot in the past, there will probably be a lot of musicians coming in and out. Maybe a lot of sunday's bands will show up late saturday night and join in on the second half of superjam
Yeah I knew it wasn't one specific group, but i'm hoping that there is a lot of switching of musicians. I couldn't imagine that it wont be, considering four hours of straight super jamming would be very odd for just one group of people
there probably will be a lot of musicians coming in and out, just cuz its the Superjam. the extended time is not unusual or odd for one group of people, however. the latenight sets at Bonnaroo are always 4 hours long, and usually are just one band, maybe two.

OK, I really have no interest in discussing who the "best" guitar player is (no matter how you slice it, its subjective and I love everyone who has been mentioned here for very different reasons), but the notion that Buddy Guy could not touch Trey if we're talking about Hendrix songs? I just have to respond to that. Buddy Guy could "Jimi Hendrix" circles around Trey, and Trey would be the first person to admit it. Buddy Guy's style is much, much, much more similar to Jimi Hendrix's style than Trey's is, and you could argue that he has basically made a career out of "sounding like Hendrix". The guy sounds exactly like Jimi Hendrix about 75% of the time, minus the mind-bogglingly original creativity that Jimi brought to the table.
For my money, I'd still rather see Ben Harper in this role. I could certainly see why some would prefer Trey. Personally I think Buddy Guy could easily "sound the most like Hendrix".
Silly but fun discussion. It would be just ridiculously insane if any of this proved true.
I will say that I am hoping that the late-night billing means that we will get some kind of announcement in the coming weeks about what the Superjam will entail (unlike previous years). My guess would be that anything with the magnitude of Trey, Ben Harper or the Duo would definitely be announced before-hand, and if we don't get any further announcement I'm going to assume something on the scale of previous Superjams (which is still great).

I totally forgot about that. That sucks Trey is pulling them to a show in St. Louis hours before they have to perform in TN with Dumpstaphunk. All that traveling, they probably won't be playing at their best. It's like Trey to put his interests first.

There's a good chance the St. Louis show was scheduled before Dupmpstaphunk decided to play at 'Roo. If Tony & Ray feel they are up to it, then thats their decision!

Yea - I would think that the whole of Trey band is stoked to tour w/ Tom Petty, being a rock legend & all.
ka mai - I see what you mean about Buddy Guy, but I'm thinking Hendrix in terms of psychedelic shred as opposed to blues-infused rippage (and he's probably equal parts both). And I definitely think Trey would bow to Buddy Guy any day of the week.

I'm sure they feel they're up to it but I'm also sure from being an avid traveller that all that jet lag will definitely inhibit them from playing to their potential.
