Hello Folks , With the impending new Year coming ( and my girlfriends nagging ) i have decided to quit smoking cigarettes... ive been smoking for 25 yrs and i never ever tried to quit . i do have some hurdles to overcome to achieve this goal, And i am asking for advice from those who already have done it.(I applaude you ) I think i will have problems in these areas
1.Upon wake up . its the 1st thing i grab. 2.I gotta have a smoke or 2 with my morning coffee's. 3. After eating , a smoke is what finish's off the meal. 4. I have to smoke when i drink beer/ cocktails 5. OMG what will i do after sex ??????????????? 6. I always have a smoke after i indulge in corn .. its a must ..
Anyway I am really going to give it a shot. also with the money i save i could buy 2 sets of VIP pass's. i welcome all advice ..

i don't tend to make new year's resolutions. if i want to do something/have a goal, i'll start applying things to it no matter what time of year it is. but i definitely understand why other people do it...turning over a new leaf in the new year and all.
good luck w/ the no smoking. are you going to do it cold turkey, or use medication, or a patch? i know one person using gum right now and it's been pretty successful, and i know another person using the patch and her try has been pretty successful, too. the only time i ever quit i did it cold turkey, but it only lasted three months. i just chewed a lot of gum and bought a LOT of blow pops.

I am a repeat failed quitter, but my friend Paul who probably used to smoke double what I do, is going on 9 months, and he hasn't looked back once... the key for him was not the gum, or the patch (which gave me AWESOME dreams , but also wacky heart palpatations ...) but the lozenge. If I had made a bet, I would NEVER have EVER put money on him ever being successful... yet somehow he was. Anyway, everyone's different, but the lozenge worked great for him... good luck in whatever you try!

I quit around Thanksgiving 2 yrs ago-Havent wanted one-
As I had tried to quit many times before, I really thought about what made me lose it when I tried.....smoking is a social behavior as much as an addictive habit-
So! I knew I could not be around others that smoked OR my routine, as you were saying earlier about coffee and everything else. Anyway, I kind of isolated myself for a few days for the initial 'kick'. (I was a smoker of many years, so it was not pleasant). I realized I would want something to replace this hankering-so when I thought I was going to give in-I'd grab one of my favorite cookies-it worked! Granted-I did not want to weigh 300 lbs for quitting smoking, but this was a good temporary replacement for what I was missing.
After 4 days, I was out of my habit and learned to exist without them-Im glad I did everyday.
I HATED being addicted to something. I did gum for about one or 2 weeks-and at first I also did not allow myself to eat corny things or drink b/c I realized I was too weak to resist. Now doing those things without smoking doesnt bother me at all.
Also, smelling cigarette smoke after those 4 days of being 'clean' was loathesome, and I wanted to say quit even more.
Basically, in being successful at quitting I think you have to take many of the temptations away until you are physically out of its grip, and then take the behaviors into account. I know it worked for me.
I thought I would be one of those people that would ALWAYS be wanting a cig after I quit. I wasnt at all-partly b/c of hating the addiction and partly b/c I thought alot about the behaviors that made me want to smoke and staying away from it until I was stronger. You have to want to quit for yourself and others you care about!
I hope this helps-Try to really think about what it is for those initial days that will help you. Thinking deeply about addiction really helped me stay quit out of principal also.
quit cold turkey - no one is going to make money off of me because I stop using something!
first time i substituted a huge corncob that i would have a bite of whenever the urge to smoke hit me. granted, this was in college, and i had lots of time on my hands. second time was probably 5 years ago - just stopped.
it's true though, once you get past the first few days, you lose the taste for it. it tastes like shit and smells worse.
however, i am not tobacco free. i probably smoke a cigar each month. more when its summer or there are special occasions. probably will always do that.
my next goal is to acquire a "volcano" so i can stop all smoking...
Congrats on a good, healthy resolution! Wish I could offer suggestions, but that is one of the few bad habits I never picked up....
However, there are some 'Roosters who quit this year (or are in the process of....) and have kind of an online "support group" thing....they may have some good suggestions - or at least sympathy pains ;D
id like to lose... uh.. lets say 30 lbs by roo. ideally more, but that's probably being a bit aggressive.
hmm. do i dare monitor this in a public forum in case i fail? any other folks interested in a roo weight-off? we probably don't need to make it as grotesque as "biggest loser", but some kind of photo documentation would be good.

I'm planning on doing the "Cold Turkey Thing" just quit and thats that....Well i hope ..

Yes... have things to chew on, anything really, that's the best advice I can give, chew, and then think Karate Kid type thoughts, then the moment passes, until the next, fewer and farther between one comes along... only way to truly do it, i think

i guess i'm crazy because i don't want to quit smoking. i know it's horrible for me, and it stinks, and it costs me extra money, but for now i ENJOY it a lot and just really don't see myself quitting anytime in the near future. that must sound so nuts.
Post by areyoukind on Nov 21, 2007 23:06:51 GMT -5
that IS nuts -- and it's your addiction talking!
its killing you and helping keep corn illegal at the same time for shame
i resolved last year: to only buy the best corn - success (except for fudgy treats)! to stay off cigs (i quit right before christmas) - success! to stop "smelling things" so strongly - success! to see widespread panic more times than in 2006 - fail! (after NYE this year it will be a tie at 5 times each year)
my resolutions this year: get into some sort of exercise routine (not to lose weight, to improve overall health) NO FAST FOOD! double my savings account (its only been growing since after bonnaroo 07) get a good camping spot at roo08
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**

lmfao, this cracks me up... my mom has a supersensitive sense of smell that causes her to literally almost vomit, sometimes at stuff that no one else smells at all... whenever she comes home from work, she says, "It smells in here!" this is definately a resolution that she should try... but how do you stop smelling things so strongly?
As for my own resolutions this year, I too am on the "need to lose weight" boat... To just look at me, clothed, i wouldn't really look that overweight because i'm very tall for a female (5'10 or 11) so i hide my weight well. However, it bothers ME and my clothes have gotten a size or two bigger this past year, so i'd like to trim back about 20-30 pounds by roo and maybe 40-50 by the end of the year. Not too daunting, but it seems like a mountain right now. I've been trying to eat less and have vigorous sex more, but that's about as far as my plan has gotten thus far.
Some of my other resolutions include getting back in college (hopefully that'll be in Jan, i've been accepted but have my breath held to hear about financial aid), improving my handwriting, and worrying less/ improving my mental outlook. I'm generally an optimist and a happy go lucky person, but there are certain mental habits I need to break. Especially since, like many fellow inforoosters, i have fallen in love recently! This is the first time i've been able to say that in 3 years, and i'm only 22. so obviously it's something that is fairly foreign to me, not to say that i've never been in love, but not a lot. Furthermore, because said person happens to be my roommate, we went from being best friends to being live-in "boyfriend/girlfriend" (i feel so 8th grade when I say that) instantly (well, as soon as we were both ready to admit we are in love, i guess). Wow, i'm rambling so much right now... Anyway, i know consciously that most doubts i have are a result of previous conditioning and inexperience with this whole thing, i just need to convince my subconsious that i'll alllll be good.... i don't know if any of that made any sense, but i tried. So, to try to find the true sorce of most of my negative thoughts, fix what i can fix, and get over the rest. No one is responsible for your happiness except for you.
I quit smoking in "01" using gum and an exercise schedule. I cant stress enough how the exercise helped.
My current project is quiting drinking. I'm currently 3 weeks and holding strong. I've also quit using corn except for special occasions (Bonnaroo). It just became to stressful with my job, having to take drug tests and worry about the results. I'm currently awaiting my results for a drug test i took last weekend. I had been clean for 6 weeks but i was reading on erowid that it can stay present in urine for up to 3 months. So yeah I'm sweatin that, but hopefully ill get the job i had an interview for last week in the CMM lab, then I can smoke like a free man.

Good luck and karma on the new job possibility! I know EXACTLY how you feel on the drug testing...I get tested a lot for my job too

My main goal for '08 is to have a regular running/hiking/some form of exercise pattern. Right now I'm planning to hike the Appalachian Trail in it's entirety in the summer of '09 as a post-college-welcome-to-reality sort of cleansing, so it'll be good to get started training my body for that time.
Where you live Strum hiking would be a great exercise program! I love to hike the foothills around here, only problem being I am DEATHLY afraid of snakes! And they tend to like to hang in the woods, under rocks and such - go figure So I walk the neighborhood a lot.... And nature trails with "boardwalks"...LOL!

I have ALWAYS wanted to do that! good luck strum!
a few resolutions of my own... - be more organized and do less procrastinating - make some new friends!! - finish school - take my first vacation as an 'adult' ie. on my own - be a good person - work more for peace
"I like too many things and get all confused and hung-up running from one falling star to another till I drop. This is the night, what it does to you. I had nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion."
central park in the summertime... the closest thing to nature

I'll join you guys on this one. I haven't done yoga since before I started school in September. I'm super extra flubby now and I generally feel like crap. I will be starting early on the new year's resolution though. Biglou and I are buying our first house together this weekend. So I thought new house, new start, new resolution to get off my ass...
I'm not into the photo thing either. I don't even allow photos of my face, much less my love handles. BUT www.tickerfactory.com has little weight loss thingys you can add to your posts or signatures or whatever. You don't have to post your weight, but you can post your weight loss goal and your progress (i.e. 20 lbs is the goal, lost 3 lbs so far, 17 lbs to go).
My other resolutions will be to draw/paint more and to try to be more optimistic/less whiny. I don't know how well that last one will go over. I'm pretty whiny.
I hoping to lose some lbs by Bonnaroo as well - I started with a new job that requires me to walk to and from the subway, and may even join a gym near said job. I am also cutting back on corn because when I consume corn, I also consume everything else in my pantry and fridge. I'd just like to have more energy and conserve this bod so I live a longer life.

DC's subway was awesome when I was there. I wish Minneapolis had a subway. The traffic/highway situation is ridiculous. Especially since the bridge fell which was insanely detrimental to our already screwed up system.

I would also like world peace.
remember, its not just a numbers game. if you join a gym and start building muscle, you will "gain weight" - or perhaps not lose any as the fat loss and muscle gain is a wash. focus more on your clothing fitting you, belt notch, etc.
although it is nice to lose weight in numbers so you can quantify it. as for me, I'm probably not going to gain much more muscle naturally... so really, i just have to drop the lbs of unsightly desk-job induced adipose tissue. which is the hard part.
if you want to lose a few lbs quick, stop eating carbs for a week or two, just lean meat & veggies, no fruit either. i lost 13 lbs in 2 weeks doing that. some of it was water, but it felt awesome to go down two sizes which helps motivation. you just have to s-l-o-w-l-y add carbs back into your diet so you don't gain it all back. i didn't gain anything back until months later when i started hitting up the arby's on the way to work again.
