I dunno - there have been monopolies for as long as there has been more than one person trying to sell something.
I am SO not saying that it's a good thing, but it's not like Starbucks or Wal-Mart invented the game or even changed the rules. The world is just smaller now.

Ahhh yes. But legal staffs and lobbies have changed the game and tilted it in favor of the ones who employ said legal staffs. And so has attitude toward achieving mega success at any cost necessary. And if this were all in the name of TRUE competition, my opinion'd be damned. But it's in the name of subsidized competion. And moreover, DOMINATION.

It's crazy, but for me, Starbucks is not the most convenient place. My Sunday morning coffee and bagel run is to the local place 1 1/2 blocks from my apartment. Starbucks is 4 more blocks down the road. And at work, there's a tiny coffee shop right across the street, although there are now two Starbucks 2-3 blocks from my office (and 2-3 blocks from each other).
But I do like Starbucks, I just don't go very often. My current fav is the skinny cinnamon dulce and after a soul-sucking day at the mall, what better way to end it than a frappuchino at Starbucks? It just fits
I buy my coffee from Starbucks. I usually shy away from monolithic corporations but when I decided to only buy "fair trade" coffee, I couldn't find any other place to get it. Sure there's mail order but nowhere could I find a list of fair trade coffee that is readily available at local stores. After searching for hours, I just decided to go with Starbucks.
I didn't check anything because I do not see them as necessarily evil but I never go to a Starbucks (I buy their coffee at the supermarket) and I would likely buy other brands if I could find the necessary info.
not good! I go to mom and pops keep the real america alive. the only time i got to a starbuks is on the highway where the mom and pops could not survive
As my Inebriated buddy walks out of the Porto, he yells out, "Dude...I love this place...bonnaroo thinks about everything...they even put beer holders next to the toilet!"
Had to break it to him that that was the urnal. Good times good times!
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it

As a software developer, I have a typical unhealthy coffee addiction. When I am in the middle of a project I drink coffee morning, noon, and night. If I'm not drinking coffee, I'm chomping on espresso beans. (I know, I've got problems).
Leaving ethics aside, Starbucks is one of the best bangs for your buck when you're talking pure units of caffeine. When you get a large drip coffee for $2, you get more than twice the amount of caffeine that you'd get from a cup of the same size from 7-11 or any typical Mom & Pop coffee shop. Starbucks uses 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds for every 1 cup of water. If you were to use that much grounds in your typical at home brewer, your basket would overflow.
Now as far as the effects that a Starbucks store will crush a Mom & Pop, I agree with the article quoted earlier as I have seen it happen first hand several times. Mom & Pop coffee shops actually see a tremendous increase in business whenever a Starbucks opens up nearby. The theory that Starbucks will introduce coffee drinking to more people through fraps & such, thus expanding the market, and people who are looking for a more "authentic" experience will patronize the Mom & Pop (after they've become hooked at the 'bucks) has been proven time and again.
So that and the fact that there is a store about a block and a half away makes me a twice a day customer -a 20oz drip coffee when I wake up, and a double or triple espresso later in the day. Both of which add up to about the same cost as a typical latte, frap, or other specialty drink.

Now as far as the effects that a Starbucks store will crush a Mom & Pop, well surprisingly the exact opposite takes place. Mom & Pop coffee shops actually see a tremendous increase in business whenever a Starbucks opens up nearby. The theory is that Starbucks will introduce coffee drinking to more people through fraps & such, thus expanding the market, and people who are looking for a more "authentic" experience will patronize the Mom & Pop (after they've become hooked at the 'bucks).
