Rep. Barney Frank said he plans to file a bill to legalize "small amounts" of marijuana.
Frank announced his plans late Friday on the HBO show "Real Time," hosted by Bill Maher.
"I'm going to file a bill as soon as we go back to remove all federal penalties for the possession or use of small amounts of marijuana," Frank, a Massachusetts Democrat, told Maher.
Frank didn't define "small amounts." Efforts to reach Frank on Saturday were not immediately successful.
Frank said he'd filed a similar bill in the Massachusetts Legislature in the 1970s, but hasn't tried since he was elected to Congress.
"I finally got to the point where I think I can get away with it," he said.
Frank said he thinks "its time for the politicians in this one to catch up to the public. The notion that you lock people up for smoking marijuana is pretty silly."
He told Maher he'd call the bill the "Make Room for Serious Criminals" bill.

Bah, I don't see it happening. I wish though. Got charged with simple possession the night before my sister's wedding back in July...that was a whole lot of fun.
My sister drove by and saw me pulled over, ran out the of the car crying "DON'T ARREST HIM HE HAS TO BE IN MY WEDDING!"
I really do hope the law will change sometime in my lifetime...I don't like the thought of being considered a criminal for something so insignificant. :/

Yep--luckily I guess North Carolina is one of the more lenient states when it comes to marijuana. They didn't arrest me, just gave me a citation. Some community service, and some no no word counseling (oh boy that was reallllllllly fun), and supposedly its off my record.
Nonetheless, I couldn't have picked a worse night for all that to happen.

in austin, cops have the choice of giving you a ticket or taking you to jail for up to an ounce of MJ
luckily, austin is the kind of city where they would choose the former
In Ann Arbor, if you have under an ounce you get a $50 ticket. That's if you aren't on state property (the University of Michigan, essentially), and you are stopped by a city cop. If it isn't a city cop, it's a game of legal Russian Roulette as to what's going to happen.

It's nice to know that some local laws are relatively reasonable, but they don't protect you from the possiblity of Federal prosecution, which Frank's bill potentially would.
