Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Picture Inforoo as a giant mansion. When most of us long-standing members came here, we walked in the front door, awkwardly poked our head around, observed the discussions and then eased into things.
Then there is the other type of noob, the one who sprints through the screen door while it's still closed, interrupts civil discourse to tell people Kanye sucks, then throws feces all over the living room before commandeering the master suite. I will never stop telling those people they're f*cking terrible and to get the f*ck out of my (our) house.
Yeah, I'm not so down with the whole 'telling people they're f*cking terrible and should get the f*ck out' thing just for their opinions on music alone. It really should not factor into this at all - and it seems to me that falls squarely under the exact same feces-throwing umbrella you're railing against. Are we here to discuss music or circle-jerk over it?
Someone could come on here and start ranting about how terrible Bowie is and how much they already miss the Jonas Brothers - and while I might poke holes in their argument, I wouldn't get all bent out of shape about it. But when someone comes here and immediately starts spewing vitriol like this:

Person 1: I think Kanye West put out the best album of the year, unfortunately his personality becomes the focus of every discussion about him and takes away from the merits of his music. Person 2: I don't think you can separate the personality from the music, I think it's part of the package and it's a big part of why I don't like Kanye. Person 1: Yeah, but there have been *ssholes throughout modern music history that are revered because of their contribution to the music people from that era still cherish. Why does Kanye get special hate for that? Person 2: Because he's more visible, and that's by his own design.
^ Fair discussion about music.
Person 2: F*ck Kanye, he f*cking sucks, he had a vajayjay transplant because LOLOLOL VAGINAS MAKE YOU WEAK Person 1: Yeah, get the f*ck out of here, you inbred jackass.

You think the two scenarios above are one and the same? You can dislike my favorite types of music. Hell, you can dislike me, but back up your comments with intelligent reasons. Don't be some mindless hater.
If you have a bad opinion (and they do exist, that lollipop nonsense they teach you in middle school about there being 'no dumb opinions" is laughable), and you share it on a public forum, you will get made fun of. That's on any forum in the existence of the internet. If you went to a f*cking My Little Pony discussion board and said something dumb, they would make fun of you. The fantasy world some of you want to create is impossible.
In the wild, you have a system of checks and balances. Everyone feels bad for the antelope, until there are no lions left to eat them and they overrun and devastate an ecosystem. You need lions just as much as antelopes here. It's unfair to assume the mods can watch every comment all day, every day. It's a way to vet the noobs. Evil ITM came here and poked the bear, got bit, and has behaved ever since (he even makes me laugh on occasion, and I'm the one who got into it with him). It's the way the internet works, and this board is cleaner than 99.9% of the internet.
I am all for fair and intelligent music discussion, except with Sang, who thinks Journey would be a great headliner. I'm serious. F*cking Journey.

So summary -- if you act like a d*ck you'll be treated like one.

No, I don't think those scenarios are the same at all - scenario #1 is a perfectly reasonable discussion, whereas the second one is more or less the exact type of thing I said jasperroo should be banned for.

I don't recall ITM ever stirring things up like that, and I've been around here for as long as he has, but I will take your word on it. I did have a year-long hiatus from Inforoo starting around September '11, so maybe it happened then.

"Evil ITM" is Evil Tim, it's just a running joke that he's ITM's evil alter-ego. Don't get lost in the details, though, that was just a throw-in comment.
Sorry y'all. I was just joking around, I mean come on.... it's the internet. I will start being nice to others and their opinions, all I ask is the same reapect shown to mine and every other noob.
The problem is the elitism. "I can call people names because they come in here not knowin how to act, according to my own rules, that no one knows about until I unleash my superior judgements on them. Then when they retort, I destroy them. HOW DARE THEM, comin in here asking for help or stating their opinions as strong as I express mine. I am the master of this domain!!! ARGGG!" That's pretty pathetic guys... I've put all of you on ignore, since the beginning. Do somethin that means something with yourself, buudddy. When I first came here and started posting, I reached out to a mod, like, "Really, is this place this negative?" They told me to stick with it, and that it was just a few people, so I did. I occasionally run across some things the upper echelon of super extra supreme elite posters on here say when I'm not signed in and get a giggle, but most of the time when I see your posts, I wonder what you do with your life, outside of this board. Let people like what they like.
What's great, though, is the info that people find on this board. Imagine how many more members there would be without the hall monitors. Or maybe, just maybe, the mods like the bullies in here to police things so that the board doesn't have too many members. I get it now!
I'd like to nominate Dave Mayner for Board Member of the month, also. That dude rocks, even when he disagrees with someone.

The people who tend to get flamed do not come into threads asking for help with their opinions or ideas. They tend to say things out of complete ignorance and stupidity. When they are called out for it, they get overly defensive and lash out, and the fun begins.
Face it, some people are morons, some people are very close minded and set in their ways. Not everyone on this earth has the purest of intentions, and I if it were not for those guys you've muted, the quality of this message board would not be worth reading. Look at Facebook and reddit dude. How much bullshit do you have to sift through to acquire any knowledge worth retaining.

I really hate the elitism argument because I think it oversimplifies things, and those that use it (not you as much in this case) tend to lump everyone with an extended tenure or large post count together when, for example, and I have ridiculous post counts and are generally respectful to everyone. Even nodepression is at a point where he's not as aggressive with his disagreements as he once was.
More specifically on your point, I think I know what kind of posts you are talking about. I don't have much experience outside of inforoo regarding message boards aside from some field trips to the coachella and lollapalooza boards. I think there is a natural order to such things on a message board though that goes along with each person's personality. Just like in real life, there's some people you like and some you don't. It's just the way of the world. One of the long-term issues that I have with the board is this idea that everyone should be able to put out their opinions without any fear of (at times) rough disagreement. Unlike the real world, the general group of people here (and this goes double for off season) have an unusually large investment in Bonnaroo and music. When I am in my office, I listen to music more than I don't. I keep a mental list of albums that I need to listen to, and I honestly feel bad when I don't make it to everything on the list. I have heard again and again from non-inforoo people that I have a ridiculous knowledge of current music, but here, I constantly feel deficient in the face of others on here. In a climate like that, music opinions are going to cause more of an emotional reaction than it would in the real world. Also, there is a sense of board persona. I don't take 95% of the things that people on here say with any kind of seriousness because I don't think any of them really mean most of what they say.

This is another thing that bothers me. Once again, the mods get paid exactly jack for doing what they do here, and they are basically f*cked in regards of popular opinion because they are constantly attacked for being too lenient or too harsh. Nobody ever seems to be happy with them, and that is sad because, of the ones I have met, all of them (even roofan) are really nice people to be around.
I'd like to nominate Dave Mayner for Board Member of the month, also. That dude rocks, even when he disagrees with someone.
haha. Gibran already took care of that a year and a half ago or something like that.

I shouldn't have been allowed to post when I was on bored campus/19-21 years old.

So much here is well said and spot on. I'd like to add to the part about "how many more members we could have." This gets brought up a lot as in - if everyone were nice all the time, people would flock here. I'm sure I'm in the tiniest of minorities, so just speaking for myself but if, when I first started exploring here it was 100% kittens and light without arguing, sarcasm, humor, emotion and yes, the occasional blowup, I would not have stuck around too much. It would be nice but boring. For me.
In terms of the elitism, I was talking about people going out of their way to be rude, from the jump. It's those who seem to search the board to find something to disagree with. They wait like predators for new prey to come in and they pounce. Those are the folks who make the board worse, in my opinion. And I love the mods. They have a thankless job, I was just kidding about that whole bit. I hope this clears things up a bit.
EDIT: And I'm certainly not lumping anyone together, just the people who fit the aforementioned crappiness. I ain't descriminatin'. I love Garageland and Dave Mayner on here. I didn't even know post count was a thing or whatever. It's just that the people who are bad to other people are people that I don't like.

Everyone on Inforoo knows exactly the people you are talking about. Just like they know you are talking about them. I am in 100% agreement with you. Those people make us worse, no doubt!
Random question, but why are ticket exchanges so frowned upon here? I understand that you don't want scalpers in here, but then again, who the hell rips someone else off for a Bonnaroo ticket? It's not like this thing sells out. Where is the issue in someone posting "hey, I bought two tickets and can't go," then selling those tickets to someone for face value or below? There is nothing illegal with that.
1. Goober in question had 4 accounts. 2. CKS sent him multiple PM's about the proper way to do this. 3. Here is the method that was explained. "You can coordinate rides and arrange to split VIP tickets (since they are only sold in pairs). You can put info in your signature or post here that you have a couple you need to get rid of (http://inforoo.com/thread/25624/tickets-arrangements-splits-singles), but you can't make threads about selling tickets (or spam other threads) or get into the nitty gritty (price, contact info, etc)." 4. We don't want to become a ticket broker. I think the above method should be adequate for everyone's needs.
Is there any way to post band camp songs? If not, can a way be made? I really like being able to post soundcloud, but there still is a lot more to cover.
Mods: Can we move this from the other [http://inforoo.com/thread/9838/music-game-degrees-phil-spector] to the arcade? The Arcade didn't exist when this thread last died.
This game has been dormant for over 6 years. Time to try and resurrect it. Here's how it's played:
Attention, audiophiles! This is something I've been dreaming up for a few years-- a music version of the popular movie game, Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.. It's kind of in beta form, but I thought people around here might have fun with it, and by testing it we could come up with good, solid rules for the game.
Here's my initial set of rules for play:
1. The Challenger names two musicians to be linked. 2. The Player may make connections using bands played in, side-projects, album collaborations, guest appearances, or production/engineering credits (for an easier version of the game, song covers may also be allowed). 3. The Player must make the connection in no more than six steps. 4. Only officially pressed and released recordings count; no live concert sit-ins or televised collaborations are allowed unless they also meet the above criteria. 5. If the Player succeeds in making the connection, he/she makes the next challenge. If the Player fails he/she is eliminated from the game.
You'll already notice that the nature of music (the musician is a self-contained entity) versus film (the actor needs to collaborate with others in order to make his art) means that the rules and play of this game is somewhat different; arguably, it's much more difficult. But I think it could be just as much fun for music lovers.
Here are two connection examples:
John Coltrane to John Lennon: 1. Coltrane played with Miles Davis on "'Round About Midnight". 2. Miles Davis had Herbie Hancock in his quintet on such albums as "Nefertiti". 3. Herbie Hancock guested on Paul Simon's album "Surprise". 4. Paul Simon, when part of Simon & Garfunkel, recorded "Bridge over Troubled Water" with Phil Spector as producer. 5. Spector also produced John Lennon's album "Imagine".
Henry Rollins to Alison Krauss: 1. Henry Rollins guested on the William Shatner album "Has Been", which was produced by Ben Folds. 2. Ben Folds recorded an EP titled "The Bens" with Ben Kweller. 3. Ben Kweller guested on Guster's album "Keep It Together". 4. Guster recorded "Lost and Gone Forever", on which Page McConnell guested. 5. Page McConnell played in Phish, on whose album "Hoist" Alison Krauss guested.
So, that's how the game works. Let me know what you think, any ideas to improve it, whatever.
