twiabp were very good last night but its kind of sad to see how inactive the crowd was compared to the very first time i saw them back in 2014. part of that likely being due to the fact that they hit a peak in popularity with whenever if ever. hopefully they tour it for its 10th anniversary in 2023
Dry Cleaning last night were fantastic. Love the balance of Florence subdued stage presence and the rest of the band tearing into it. Seeing this band blow up over the pandemic has been great. Catch them either on this tour or next year.
I was thinking the same thing, I forget what song it was but the bass and guitar player were just going hard and she was just chillin with her monotone monologue… simply fantastic!!
I left right after their last song and was able to catch the last 3/4 of Chicano Batman at the Shrine, they rocked the shit out of that place. So much better vibe then when I saw them in Vegas last month.

I'm seeing them tomorrow night and have been looking forward to it for exactly this reason, so this is *really* REALLY great to hear. Fuck I'm excited.
Saw Josh Abbott Band do a pre-game show before the Tech football game today and I'm very happy to say that after being extremely disappointed by his live show a couple of years ago, he completely kicked ass today. I don't know if I was in a better mood or if he was just excited to be back on Tech's campus (he's an alumnus) but this show was really fun. Also, they pulled off an awesome cover of Highway to Hell and I'm convinced his keyboardist was on coke.

I saw The Hold Steady last night. I feel like you're a really devoted fan of The Hold Steady, there's sort of a self-aware embarrassment that comes with it - they're not particularly cool and their fans are particularly obsessive and it seems like the majority of people who I know who really love them are either 1) from Minnesota, 2) Catholic, or 3) both, making them an incredibly niche band to really get into. And yet, here I am, admitting on here that I drove 14 hours round trip in a weekend to go see them.
It fucking ruled.
I went on the generosity of a friend who had tickets but ended up not going. I kept on texting him during the show the high points of the setlist - playing "Chips Ahoy!" into "The Weekenders", closing the main set with the three best THS closing songs ("Southtown Girls"/"Slapped Actress"/"How a Resurrection Really Feels"), and a basically perfect, incredibly high-energy encore ("Certain Songs"/Stuck Between Stations"/"Stay Positive"/"Entitlement Crew"/"Killer Parties"); from my perspective there were two dud song picks but I'm sure it was a gold mine for the one person in the audience who is a diehard "T-Shirt Tux" fan.
I could talk about the other intricacies the made it great (namely having a horn section on some older songs) but really when it boils down to it this is a band I will travel for because there's a good chance they'll play every favorite song of yours, deep cut or not, on any given night. I think part of the reason why I had a hard time with the MMJ setlist is that as a Hold Steady fan, the entire appeal of seeing this band repeatedly live is that they have 50 or so beloved songs and it's a real delight to see which 30 of them they're going to play on any given night. There's a lot of the same rituals involved with being a fan of a jam band and maybe it would be cool if I saw them do a truly extended "Killer Parties" or whatever, but the best thing about this band is that at their core, they are crowd pleasers more than anything else. And, well, I was pleased.
I also want to give a shout out to First Avenue; I apologize in advance to the city of Chicago but First Avenue is still the best club I've ever been to and, if you'll permit a little hyperbole, will probably ever go to. I also want to give a shout out to openers Gully Boys and Kiss the Tiger. I've always thought that the Twin Cities are funny in that their music scene perhaps overemphasizes live performances, meaning that while I probably won't sit down and listen to their music, I'm going to think about how great those shows were for a long time.
tl;dr I love First Avenue, I love the Twin Cities, I love The Hold Steady. fuck the haters.
Caught SASAMI over the weekend opening for Japanese Breakfast. Although I like her new style, I really wish I was able to catch her when she was touring for her first record. Her faster, more metal tinged style is a far cry from her earlier stuff. Pacify My Heart, Turned Out I Was Everyone, Callous, all incredible tracks. Only playing one track from the s/t wasn't what I was expecting. Oh well, hopefully she digs back in her discography on her headlining tour next year.
tl;dr I love First Avenue, I love the Twin Cities, I love The Hold Steady. fuck the haters.
Ya two of those things are fucking great. I love how when I'm abroad I can say prince and first avenue and people know what's up.
Osees show at le guess who was special. They closed out the festival but due to a partial shutdown it had to be a seated show for the festival to go on. Everyone found out on Friday that the Netherlands would go into lockdown and within hours they had Saturday rescheduled and the next morning Sunday was released with bent arcana > Faust IV > osees in the Pandora hall. Everyone was seated for the first 2 immersive shows but as soon as john Dwyer told everyone to not be afraid to get up and dance it set off.
It started with 2 friends running to the front and within a few minutes some dude broke out of the pit to start stacking up chairs which must have got to 20 high to prevent any injuries. It was my first time seeing the osees and they put on a show. Tight sound, breaking drum equipment, John dwyer knocked over his keyboard / pedal stand and somehow caught it with hilarious banter throughout. Was tough to choose between osees and sons of kemet but think I made the right decision.
Saw the Moyo over the weekend too! Might have been the loudest set I've seen from them so far and I loved it. I had seen them quite a few times pre-pandemic so this felt like coming home, like my concert equivalent of comfort food.
Only complaint is I wish they'd change up the setlists a bit. They're ignoring some great songs from Masana Temples and Stone Garden. New song they played sounded excellent though, I hope they bring back whatever new song they were playing back in 2019.

I saw Bob Dylan last week. I'd been putting it off for a decade because of mixed reviews, but I'm glad I went.
The start was rough. Watching the River Flow and Most Likely You'll Go Your Way and I'll Go Mine had missed cues, bad microphone sitations. I was really worried for the first 8 minutes or so that all the worst things I'd heard were true. Then something amazing happened, all the new songs sounded great! His voice was good. (I mean, not Rolling Thunder Revue good, but pretty good for 80). Songs I didn't even like on the record like Key West or I Made Up My Mind to Give Myself to You actually had a really amazing vibe that you could sink into. When I Paint My Masterpiece was the only other dud the rest of the night.
I thought I was going to hate that I didn't get the greatest hits, but I ended up really enjoying the new songs in a live context. Of the older songs, To Be Alone With You, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight and Every Grain of Sand worked the best. I've been kind of obsessed with Bob lately, particularly the 1967-71 era. the Another Self Portrait bootleg is great, New Morning is underrated, love Nashville Skyline. Good vibes Bob doesn't match the insane heights of the mid 60s or Blood on the Tracks, but its just that, a great vibe. So I was pleased to get a few songs from that era in this show.
Overall, can't complain. Saw a master. It was weird, shaky sometimes, but overall very pleasant.
Hey, who's ready to hear about how awesome Caribou was?
First off - Jessy Lanza was also phenomenal. That combination of breathy soprano and insanely huge amounts of bass works so, so well, and to be honest I think she took advantage of the fact that she had a giant LED screen at her disposal better than Caribou did. And after months of bitching about shitty crowds I am pleased to report that the crowd for Jessy (and Caribou) was excellent, really respectful and really into it. Great stuff!
But also, all the rumors are true: Caribou continues to fucking rule live. From having a spot on the setlist to play a random deep cut (today it was "Jamelia" which was fantastic), to the extended versions of the new songs, to an incredible new variation on "Sun", everything was basically perfect. Also, my dad was there and he was dancing to it. He never dances.
Go see SQUID They sound amazing live, especially for a band with only one album out. I dig that they dabbled with synths as preludes or endings of songs and think that that have a lot more in the tank for us in the future. The crowd was hype the band was tight catch them on this tour if you can, definitely worth the $16 I paid. Plus you’ll get street cred on seeing them this early when they blow up on their next album. So far the UK bands are living up to the hype. Idles, Black Midi, Dry Cleaning and now Squid…all phenomenal.

I think it’s unlikely cosndering it’s really just a synth track but they still could hypothetically play it given the wide range of deep cuts they’ve been playing!

Well crap, this makes me mad at myself for cheaping out on the show at the Greek earlier this week. Was monitoring prices and they never dipped below face value, which is odd since all the photos I saw looked like a half-empty venue. Admittedly, I was also bitter about Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith dropping out (who I like just as much as Caribou), but it sounds like I should definitely check out Jessy Lanza. Glad you had an awesome time at least!
(God, what a turnaround from 3 months ago where I was desperate to go to any show, and now I'm being too picky!)

So hyped to see a Jessy headlining show in a few weeks, I've only seen her as an opener so far.
Despite Emma Ruth Rundle suddenly canceling, day 1 of Substance was sweet. Really like the venue set up with multiple stages going off without a hitch. And Belasco is gorgeous inside. King Woman were majestic. NIIS were a great surprise. Love the energy. Kid Congo was a mind melting experience. Ceremony played a beautiful set. Didn’t know they incorporated a keytar into their sets now. Last time I saw them, they stuck to more of their hardcore roots while this set was full on their new style which fits the fest. Plague Vendor was my 2nd more anticipated band and they delivered. I never checked them out because their name sounded like a generic black metal band but boy, was I wrong. Abrasive and wild rock and roll how I like it. And a frontman that reeks of Iggy Pop. Favorite set of the night. And Chelsea Wolfe does what Chelsea Wolfe does so no complaints there.
Looking forward to Squid, Nitzer, Twin Tribes and Second Skin tonight.

Laura Marling was really great. Just her and a guitar, and only 3 songs from Song For Our Daughter which is the only album I really know from her, but it was still so good.
Jesse Lanza just finished and there are still plenty of rail spots open. Feel bad for caribou a little tbh but at least there’s plenty of room to dance.

shows definitely seem a bit emptier this year. preoccupations last night was empty and at least half the people must have left after metz played

yea its criminal how badly it seemed to undersell. in Boston it was near empty til halfway thru Jessy Lanzas set. was maybe like 75% full by the end. he has a bigger audience in Europe it seems

its always sad seeing that happen especially because it makes it less likely for the artist to come back to that city. KLO was phenomenal but they only sold maybe 300/500 tix
Saw Baroness's setlist by request tour tonight. I get why they went to play intimate venues but man, it felt oversold in that tiny room; it didn't help that although I'd been mostly over my booster side effects I got a roaring headache and backpain about 2/3rds of the way through a group of men in front of me strategically repositioned themselves so I could barely see anything. However: the setlist was fantastic, and also, holy fuck it was long; the show was about 2 1/2 hours long. Going to wait until I see the full setlist to avoid making mistakes about discussing song choices but I believe they played multiple songs from First which was shocking and incredible?? Plus it was my first time seeing the band with Gina in it and wow, in particular she and John sing harmonies really well. Also, man, those guys just look so *happy* when they play, which just makes the whole thing so much fun. In the end, the vibe felt like maybe the best produced house show I'd ever been to - it felt like it could be a bit of trainwreck the whole time, but I wouldn't have had it any other way.
