-dead and co: good show (see above), we got El Paso, Dallas didn't, small victory, black muddy river was amazing
-doobie brothers: first show with my fiance's parents, she picked out because she knew her dad was a fan, but I have a ton of nostalgia for it and it was a ton of fun for me to meld our world's a little and he, and her mom, had such a good time that after the show they suggested we do it again. crowd went absolutely bananas every time Michael McDonald took the mic.
- levitation: excellent weekend, needs to move to zilker the well > fuzz - absolutely too packed, well was sick and we had a good spot but we tried to maneuver to a better situation but the show crowd really swelled in the time we moved. started the fuzz set w no view and weird sound but eventually got position where everything smoothed out and it was great.
black midi - opened for themselves power move, great stage presence, killer set, really set a high bar. moved into can't miss territory.
Ecco2k > Yves tumor - really enjoyed Ecco, played everything I wanted, good stage presence which really carried the show, feel like it could really pop w a full band but the pit was a very engaged sing a long group, that none of the other shows really had. Yves was sick, guitarist was really good (went up the stairs at some point) and I had no problem w the lip sync because it was just a very glam/presentation level show, needed more let the Lioness flow freely but overall was really killer show
thanks for the reminder!!! currently tickets are less than $20 on stubhub for insanely shitty seats on the first night but because of some work stuff I'd rather not go that day so fingers crossed it drops to similarly low prices on the next two days!!
Saw The Budos Band at Brooklyn Made on Friday. They absolutely KILLED!!!! Then I saw The Nude Party at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday. Those guys never disappoint, always super fun. After that I went to Gutter for some cover bands. Saw Led Zeppelin and The Cars. I feel like total trash today but it was worth it.
I was baptized by MMJ tonight. Chills and tears and jams and monster mammoth songs. I’ll be riding this wave for a while. The new stuff flowed amazing with the classics.
Ashnikko was pretty good last night but their opener, chloe moriando stole the show for sure. She was awesome. the crowd was utter garbage though, so many fights

That blows. I can recall all sorts of douchebaggery back when I lived in Boston (especially from all the typical bros), but never full-blown fights in concert venues.

Were these shows at the Royale? I remember that venue randomly began to attract aggressive crowds for around a year, 2012 to 2013 maybe, but cooled down shortly after that.
I'm a day late but I came here to say that I'm sorry I ever doubted MMJ. The hype is real.
The setlist was almost perfection (no Mahgeetah but that's okay), the light show was unbelievable, and I knew Jim James had an incredible voice but you just don't realize how powerful it is until you're in a small-ish theatre surrounded by it.

both were I think, peggys crowd last night at the Royale was also crazy, great show though!

ashnikko was at paradise and willow was at royale. honestly i think the age and demographic of the audience contributed quite a bit too. a lot of them acted like theyve never been to shows before
Saw Stewart Copeland perform Police songs with an orchestra last night in LA. He's my favorite drummer so it was pretty neat! Some real jazzy arrangements. Was anyone else there by chance?

Soooooooo I’m sure you’re going to have a different take on this than me but I only learned during Bedouine’s set that they were going to play a totally different setlist each night. As someone who has listened to a lot of MMJ and still is at best a casual this was honestly not ideal. I know they’re not catering to people like me and I accept that but it started off great but the middle was bogged down with a whole lot of Tennessee Fire (an album I, sorry to say, don’t really like a whole lot!) deep cuts. Liked the ending with Mahgeetah as a closer and a 20 minute disco Dondante (!!!!!) but then it was kind of bogged down by a rather limp encore which was again buoyed by a great Phone Went West. I get it’s a three night residency but at this price point I would’ve expected (and, sorry, preferred!) a lot more playing to the center. Or, to put it more succinctly - this was my first time seeing MMJ, with likely few chances to see them again soon, and this was a real bad set for a first timer.
Like. I want to clarify that I’m having a bad night for unrelated reasons and above all else I’m going to remember that insane Dondante but also for a first time MMJ experience I can’t help but feel a bit cheated after spending $75!

They did a very similar thing the last time they came to town in 2015. I only saw one of the three nights then and I had a very similar reaction. Was a little disappointed to not get some of the bigger songs, but I wouldn't say I came away disappointed. Hard to come away disappointed from this.
Seeing all three nights is the way to go though. When it's all said and done they'll probably be in my top 10 sets ever (although they'd only take up one slot, because they're inseparable from each other, in a way).
I loved pretty much that entire back half. I Think I'm Going to Hell was a really nice surprise, for me. Tomorrow we'll (probably) get the heavy hitters; One Big Holiday, Touch Me pt. 2, I Will Sing You Songs, Wordless Chorus, etc. etc. I'm hoping for Highly Suspicious, because it's one of my favorite live songs by any band. Thursday's encore was quite a bit better, but I Will Be There When You Die is probably my #2 MMJ song. I'm biased.
Okay after sleeping on it I've come around: I still wasn't a fan of that middle section (though I will admit I did enjoy "I Think I'm Going to Hell") but I enjoyed having "Holdin on to Black Metal" in the encore and I really enjoyed the beginning of that set and Dondante/Mahgeetah more. So, still not really an ideal setlist by any means and I'm still not happy about the no repeats over 3 nights thing, but it was a good show. case dismissed
Came in here to say I saw Eric Krasno & the Assembly at Hulaween and it was my favorite set of the festival. Bluesy jam but good lord can the man play the guitar. His solos seriously had me on a completely different level that very few guitarists have ever put me. Their songs are good and the band played really well together. Awesome keys player and the vocal harmonies were top notch. I highly, highly recommend anyone to see them if you have the opportunity.
Also re: MMJ, I was super excited for them at Roo and then got tickets for Alpharetta which was rescheduled and I couldn't attend. So the anticipation was real. Never seen them before. Then I saw them at Hula and I did leave the set feeling a bit disappointed. I think the disappointment was mostly just because I had hyped it up for so long in my head I expected it to be something it wasn't going to be. I thought there would be more jamming for some reason, and a big reason I think I got a bad first impression is because the show just felt very scripted and staged, especially compared to the jam I was seeing that weekend. But like shuck said, I slept on it and came around. It was a seriously awesome rock show, Jim James has a fiery stage presence, and the band played really well. They also have great songs and I knew pretty much every song they played. One Big Holiday, Feel You, and In Color were the highlights for me

I saw Buddy Guy at the Chevalier on Friday night, and there was nearly a fight there. While people were leaving, some yuppie was telling people to keep moving and go to the exits. Some old aggro guy got up to him, pointed right in his face, told him to stfu, then was saying to his friend how he'd fight the yuppie if necessary.
Actually did see a fight break out at King Crimson at the Pavillion a couple months ago.

Dry Cleaning last night were fantastic. Love the balance of Florence subdued stage presence and the rest of the band tearing into it. Seeing this band blow up over the pandemic has been great. Catch them either on this tour or next year.

This makes me even more happy about my purchase for their show here in NC next year
