On Thursday, I saw Foo Fighters, The Pretenders, and Mammoth WVH at Great American Ballpark. Eddie Van Halen’s kid plays some decent buttrock, and he can shred, but I’m not sure it’s anything I’d seek out again. The Pretenders were excellent. Chrissie Hynde is still a badass at 72 years old, and her voice is still great. “Back on the Chain Gang” and “I’ll Stand by You” are among my all-time favorite songs, and it was great to sing along at the ballpark. This was my first time seeing Foo Fighters since 8/19/95 - a gap of 10,568 days. Dave Grohl is impossible not to love - as a person and as a performer. (If you haven’t read his book, read it.) They only played two songs that they played at that last show - “This is a Call” and “My Hero”, which hadn’t even been recorded yet as of that first show.
On Friday, I saw Jerry Harrison & Adrian Belew: Remain In Light. Cool Cool Cool pulled double duty, serving both as the Remain In Light band and the opener. Their opening set was good funky fun, with the highlight for me being their cover of “Brass In Pocket”, which they played because The Pretenders didn’t play it the night before. The Remain In Light set was just jam after Talking Heads jam. The band sounded phenomenal, and Harrison and Belew’s vocals served the songs well. The only bummer was that Belew’s guitar rig wasn’t working. He played a few songs through the Cool Cool Cool guitarist’s rig, but other than singing a couple tunes, he mostly took the night off.
i saw Faye Webster yesterday. honestly wasn’t a big fan. i feel like she was pretty cool and interesting initially but she feels like a one trick pony and all of her songs sound the same. new album just didn’t hit but glad i caught her on the i know im funny tour. julie was super cool but i only caught half their set since parking was a clusterfuck
ScHoolboy Q was awesome, performed a full hour and a half of songs spanning his discography. rapped every word and the blue lips stuff hit especially hard live. i really wish he had a live band for this tour but having Mackwop as his dj made up for that. if anyone is on the fence about seeing him, just do it

Going to Amyl and the Sniffers (w/ Lambrini Girls) tonight. A very rare Tuesday night sell out in Kansas, insanely hot outside so no doubt the inside will be a fucking sauna.
Shout out to Foo Fighters since this side show wouldn't have been possible without getting them to open their stadium shows

Justice was incredible in DC the other night. Honestly the best show I've seen so far this year. The temptation to drive up to their Philly show tomorrow is real

Such a fun show. Lambrini Girls very political and cover some serious topics in their lyrics but also made it fun? Got Free Palestine, ACAB and Fuck JK Rowling chants going, singer kept going in the pit.
Amy is a metric fuck ton of energy packed into a 5 foot 0 body. Guitarist got some good solos in. Some good banter between her and the bassist. Very enjoyable, energy packed show.

i live close to the venue since its existence and only went once, recently and it was brutal. im keeping an eye on tix tonight just bcuz im actually free and if they drop to around 20 with one of the few worthwhile seats i can deal with it. im not sure how many more chances ill have to see Justice locally and i blew it in vegas a few years back

They were a last-minute substitution at a Boston-area music festival limited to artists with New England ties last weekend and they were a mighty force of nature onstage. Think 70% shoegaze, 20% emo, and 10% Pearl Jam.
(Biggest names at the fest were Model/Actriz, Ian Sweet, Palehound, Vundabar, Pile, Bay Faction, and Ovlov. Most of the artists, though, were the sort of local bands and artists 2nd or 3rd down the bill at a small club or basement show. A lot what I saw wasn't impressive, but enough was to make it worthwhile...particularly Ovlov and Palehound, as well as folk/punk/acoustic duo Sweet Petunia, who wouldn't be out of place at Newport Folk.)
Given the cash-grab status of the "reunion/celebration" and Phil generally being a terrible person, I wished that I did NOT enjoy the "Pantera" set I saw last night. But wishes don't always come true. The songs are just too good, Zakk Wylde does Dimebag cosplay too well, and the heart wants what it wants.
Metallica was swell but no one should require any deep thoughts on how a Metallica stadium set in 2024 goes.
saw Glass Animals for the first time over the weekend and they were awesome. Most packed i ever saw the venue. Felt like it couldve been a pretty well sold arena show.
In the past week, I saw Rosali opening for Iron and Wine (whom I didn't stay for). When I first saw her earlier this year, she and her backing band, Omaha's Mowed Sound, were very much in "sounds just like the album" territory, which isn't a bad thing when your latest album is AOTY contender Bite Down. But they've gotten even better through extensive touring this year, and they now elevate the songs above and beyond the recorded versions. She's got a Mountain & Pacific time zone tour this fall, opening for Mdou Moctar. If the idea of Sandy Denny jamming with mid-70's Fleetwood Mac and Crazy Horse appeals to you, don't miss it.
A couple of nights later, I saw Austin, TX's Good Looks play in a tiny basement bar. If loud, rootsy rock -- too energized to be proper folk, but perfect for Newport or Railbird -- is your cup of tea, they're a good time.
Olivia Rodrigo and the Breeders 8/16/24 at the Forum
What really stood out over the course of roughly an hour and 45 minutes of Rodrigo's set was how shockingly minimalist it was for an arena pop show. You had the requisite giant video board, a lift in the center of the stage. and a handful of dancers, but outside of a "moon" stage prop that allowed her to travel over the crowd, this is not the overwhelming bombast of the Taylor's Eras Tour or Beyonce's Renaissance or Sphere. It certainly fits in well with her 90's alt rock sensibilities.
Rodrigo isn't exactly the most dynamic performer, though I can appreciate a pop star with seemingly as much rhythm as me. It's all winning force of personality that allows her to connect with her fanbase, one that was younger than I expected. I assumed it would be mostly teens and college aged, roughly in the same timeframe as the 21-year-old Rodrigo, but there were a ton of literal kids in the audience.
I had to be the only person in the building as enthused to see the Breeders as Rodrigo. They were great, even if the crowd didn't seem to really get it, and Kim Deal remains an alt rock treasure. There was a bit of a reaction when they kicked into "Cannonball."
Do I wish I could have saved a few bucks instead of shelling out for platinum tickets to avoid the whims of the secondary market? Sure. Was it a lot of fun? Absolutely.

I saw The Jayhawks on Saturday at Cincinnati's beautiful Memorial Hall. If there is a person on earth that writes a better melody than Gary Louris, I surely haven't come across them. Every song was a gem, and his voice sounds just as good as it did 30 years ago. He had his phone sitting on a little table beside him, where his wife watched the whole set via FaceTime, which I though was really nice. Also, second row for the win!

danny brown with frost children as his backing band last night was one of the best shows i've seen all year. so much of danny's production he's rapped on over the years lends itself perfectly to a fuller, heavier sound and they capitalized on that, especially with some of the old, scaring the hoes, and atrocity exhibition tracks. they did a re-worked version of attak that was more laid back but was a great interpretation of that song.
it makes total sense that a group like frost children would be fans of danny and they clearly gave a shit about learning the songs inside and out and danny reciprocated. overall i wasn't sure what to expect going in but it was as good as it possibly could have been. just a phenomenal set and i really hope they tour it. i watched a little of frost children's set afterwards and it's not for me, but the kids loved it and i'm glad it exists (i'm working on entering my 30s gracefully over here).

I saw them at Deer Creek Music Center in Noblesville, IN, in 2000. I walked right in, and no one checked my ticket. That made me mad because I’d paid 35 DOLLARS for that ticket, so I turned around and made them scan my ticket before I went on to enjoy the show. Good show!
