I have always been a casual fan of the Grateful Dead. I own their "Very Best Of", have always loved tracks like Sugar Magnolia, Truckin, Touch of Grey, etc. etc. But I have never gotten too "in depth" with them.
However, after an encounter with my good friend Lucy this weekend, and listening to them for the majority of the time, I feel as though I need a better "education" on the Grateful Dead, as I want to have a greater appreciation for them.
So I figure, no better place than inforoo to gain an such an education! So, roosters, what can you enliven me with?
If you want to learn more about the history of the greatfull dead you can read " A Long Strang Trip" by Dennis Mcnally
If you want to hear more of they're music you gotta go for the live stuff. Everyone has there a favorite dead era. I prefer 70's dead. Two shows that i'd recomend from that era are 7-8-78 Red rocks and 2-26-77 (my birthday show). A good place to get free legally traded G.D is furthurnet.com. Nugs.net has some good shows for a decent price also.
I think a good place to start for a new dead person would be the album American Beauty. It's very nice and has alot of acoustic, I think its a good place to start getting a feel. If you like live shows theres a podcast called deadpod with lots of live dead shows, thats cool and free too.
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**

I spoke extensively to Dennis last year before and during Roo. He's the Dead's historian and Bobby Weir's publicist. Very nice guy, and knows a TON of people in the biz. When Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna) walked in during our interview with Bobby, Dennis was very surprised to see Bobby so candid, as he stood up and interviewed Jack with our mics... Right on the spot! A very cool moment, but Dennis has certainly seen his fair share of Dead insanity!
