I have made my reservations for lunch on my way home from Bonnaroo so it is safe to let the cat out of the bag but it's not in Nashville but so worth it for a great southern meal. Miss Mary Bobo's boarding house in Lynchburg is an experience and fired okra is always served. If you have never done it, I strongly suggest you check it out. But make reservations soon as they place is booked weeks in advance. You can also check out Jack Daniels while there.

Oh, yeah. Killer spiciness doesn't affect me much, but I'm sure most other folks would be humming a particular Johnny Cash tune (with mariachi trumpets) the next morning.
I like Jackson's Bar & Bistro too, which is basically across the street from Boscos & also next to the Pancake Pantry. Nice outdoor eating (great for people watching), good fries & good drinks. My favorite menu item is the Rio pannini (chicken, provolone, & avocado) There's a couple other places to eat around there too (like coffee house/restaurant Fido's), so you could easily check out the menus of each to find a place you like. Also some fun little shops (I love Pangaea!) The area is called the Hillsboro Village: www.hillsborovillage.com/index.htm (location/directions & lists all merchants in the area) Just be aware that parking is a little difficult.

Hot BBQ - There is a place in Denver called M&D's. They have a HOT sauce. Being that I like hot green chile, I thought I would order the hot BBQ sauce. The woman serving us simply looks at me and tells me that I am having the mild. Something about me being a white guy at a predominantly black restaurant. I do not know if is still open, but boy-o-boy, it was great food.
For a MAJOR splurge - Capitol Grille in the Hermitage Hotel - but it is $$$$ - But worth it! ;D
Mojo Grill on Broadway has really good sammys and pizzas and a good beer selection on tap - Sweetwater Blue - YES! ;D
Blackstone Brewery is also good.. they brew their own beer that is REALLY tasty....and the food is above average too....especially the gormet pizzas....YUMMY! ;D
I gotta agree with everyone who suggested loveless cafe. aside from the sheer history of the place, the food is unbeatable. perfect breakfast for thursday morning before headin over to manchester. trust me, its worth the 15 minute drive from downtown. i mean, johnny cash used to drive 45 minutes from sumner county several times a week just to eat there......i think you can handle the drive once! be sure to hit up the hot cakes (christian latkes hahaha) with applesauce and sour cream and load up on the biscuits!
Well I have decided to give an area/price guide to the different parts of town, just trying to focus on stuff that is only available in Nashville (as far as I know)
East Nashville Best - Margot's - Downside, you need reservations, and plan on 75-100 per person after tip. Upside, they have awesome cuisine, and they get the ingredients including beef from local farms. They can't quite tell you the name of the cow, but they will give you it's age, and the name of the farm.
Good- Battered and Fried - Downside, not the worlds best beer/wine selection, and there can be quite a wait to get in. Upside, awesome sushi, not what you expect at a Boston themed place, and if fried seafood is your thing you will not be disappointed. Also you are next door to Three Crow Bar which has a wonderful beer selection, but only bar food to eat.
Average - Alley Cat - Downside, service can be spotty at times, and the menu which is kind of tex mex is pretty limited. Upside - Wonderful mixed drinks, and the fried avocado is a wonderful snack.
Downtown/midtown (I am skipping the expensive fine dining in this section, it does exist downtown but nothing special, if you want that I would recommend a Margot's reservation)
Best - Demos - Downside, the lunch menu is a little sparse, and sometimes at lunch you get the impression they made the pasta the night before. Upside - Wonderful seafood steaks, and garlic bread at a fairly reasonable price. Also you are very near the 2nd, and Broadway area so it is a good place to fuel up for a long night of Honky-Tonkin.
Good - Sam's Sushi - Downside, well he is called the Sushi Nazi albeit affectionately for a reason, there are no special orders, no tipping, and honestly order whatever you like, cause your gonna get whatever Sam thinks you need. I have seen people kicked out of the store for protesting some of these rules Upside, I list this good, because it really is some of the finest sushi in town, and Sam is a nice guy just set in his ways. Also it is hard to spend more than 7-10 dollars there including a beer. It is a place definitely worth experience.
Average - Mambu - Downside, It is in a very trendy area (The Gulch), and it is very trendy cuisine fusion can be a good thing but they take it to far, and it can get very expensive if you have drinks. Upside, great desserts, and there is always something going on in the Gulch so I would recommend it as more of a drinks, and dessert place before checking out the other stuff down there.
West Nashville/Vandy
Best - Mafioso's - Downside, it gets really really crowded in there while Vandy is in session. Upside, a lot of good choices here, from gourmet pizzas to great theme named pasta dishes. Also a good beer selection at the bar Yazoo, Sweetwater, Terrapin etc..
Good - Sitar - Downside, Sometimes I have problem trying to get this Indian food spiced how I want it, either to bland or mouth blisteringly hot. However, recently I discovered that ordering it at medium hot is a good level. Upside, this is a nice family owned indian place close to Vanderbilt. Usually it is full of all the locals from India (because of Vanderbilt we have a significant community in the area) which is always a good sign. Also it is next door to a awesome Shisha/Hookah bar which is a great way to kill a couple of hours, just smoking shisha and drinking mint tea.
Average - Rumba's- Downside, this is a Tapas place so the portions are small, also a trendy Tapas place so they are expensive. Upside, Mojito's Mojito's Mojito's man they are good there I did not like the things until I tried them at Rumbas. The food is good especially the Conch fritters with a sweet/spicy glaze. Also on Sundays you can buy Wine for half price which is darn close to what it costs at the liquor store, they are not averse to uncorking it, watching you taste it, and letting you sneak home with the rest. (In Tennessee no store liquor sales on Sunday are allowed.

This thread is great - even for us that live around Nashville! From all your posts, I've got some new restaurants to try! ;D
Also, if your in Murfreesboro, there's a great sushi restaurant that just opened called Fin Fusion Sushi Bar (2862 S Church St Murfreesboro, TN 37127). I only know of 2 other sushi places in the 'boro and (imo) this is the best place for good sushi at a good price. I'm trying to promote them a bit because I don't want them to leave!
Tomato Tomato just opened up in Murfreesboro. They're great. And SATCO in Nashville is really good and ridiculously cheap. Best taco joint in the state imo.

Nashville sucks. Don't be a tourist. If you are headed north on I-24 stop in Murfreesboro and go to the "Kleer-vue " Awesome home cooking...nothing from a can. Get some culture.
Here is the address:
226 S Highland Ave Murfreesboro, TN 37130-4207 Phone: (615) 896-0520
Mapquest it.
Skip nashville.....or you can go and hang out at Hooters with all the other Yankees.
If you're looking for a place like hooters in Murfreesboro go to Toot's instead. I think they actually have 4 toot's in the u.s. now but murfreesboro is where they started. If you like fried greasy $hit, Toot's is definitely the place to go.
Other than that Kleer-vue and front porch cafe are great places for soul food. If you're looking for bars while you're in m'boro then go to wall street or liquid smoke on the square.
Nashville is fun too but it's very touristy. M'boro is more of a college town and it's a little cheaper.
But if you do decide to go to Nashville, i'd suggest Southstreet. Get the shrimp and crawfish enchiladas.
We have a reservation for Mary Bobo's on the Wednesday before Roo and we will take the Jack Daniels tour while in Lynchburg. Good pre Roo food and fun.
Thanks for the suggestions. Sorry to be picky, but do you know of any good places a bit closer to the airport?
There are a few decent places in the airport to eat since they've remodeled (so I've heard). That may be your best bet. I work next to the airport, and as for food that's special to Nashville, there really isn't much out this way. So you may have to be willing to travel in to town to get better/special food.
Phat Bites - This place is really good. great sandwiches and a great vegetarian menu as well. 940 Allen Rd, Nashville, TN (615) 871-4055
Raz'z Bar & Grill - never been here but i hear it's good. 2241 Murfreesboro Pike, Nashville, TN (615) 399-8084
La Hacienda Mexican Restaurant - This is a great little mexican restaurant right by my house. 3670 Bell Rd, Nashville, TN (615) 902-6060
More Expensive restaurants close to the airport:
New Orleans Manor - Never been here but if you're looking for a really fancy meal i hear this is a good place to go. 1400 Murfreesboro Pike, Nashville, TN (615) 367-2777 Ellendale's Restaurant - This is probably the best restaurant around the airport. dinner is a little expensive but if you go for lunch you can get the gourmet buffet for around $11 a plate. It's well worth it in my opinion. 2739 Old Elm Hill Pike, Nashville, TN (615) 884-0171 www.ellendales.com/

I work by the airport - and I wholeheartedly support the Phat Bites mention. Get a slice of quiche and couple sides makes the best lunch you can get around here.
Good list, t1, though I wouldn't suggest Ellendale's unless you're over 55, it's sort of who they cater too. Reminds me of a place where you'd have afternoon tea. I've been there twice, both times it wasn't worth the price for a non-inspired buffet. Service is slow too. (no offense, t1)
I've been to Raz'z many-a-times and personally, I don't think it's anything special (but it's the only place my boss will eat). Sort of like a local take on Chili's or Applebee's, but they try to have a "cajun" flare, though I'd bet it's nowhere near real Cajun food.
I've heard Phat Bites is good, though I've never personally been there. You can find pretty good Mexican food anywhere over in this area.... I guess it just depends on what you define as special/localized food in Nashville.
