I always felt Tool had a unique sound, so I thorougly enjoyed their show.
My only problem with it is that the crowd sang over Maynard whenever Tool played their old songs.
I am one of those that is there to hear the singer sing, not the crowd. This is why I don't usually go to shows once a band or musician has become extremely high-profile.
Had to go with Metallica.... Left Tool early to get a prime spot for Superjam last year. Saw all of Metallica this year so I enjoyed them more. What I saw of Tool was really good though.
Tool is a band I like more currently (they make better music currently) but Metallica's show was absolutely amazing. Best headliner since Radiohead, imo.
Metallica. I wasn't a Tool fan before they headlined, and their show did nothing for me. I wasn't a Metallica fan, but now I am. Metallica also had much better crowd interaction.

Yeah the vibe for the Tool show was such a crazy about to drop a bomb on the place feel, that I have never experienced before. It was amazing and when I think of roo I think of the Tool set. Just amazing.
"That's the big thing about education. People can be book smart, but not really intelligent about anything else. A lot of times they just taking in all this information and regurgitate it. It's much more important to process it and personalize it. To apply it to your world, to your life. You have to walk the walk, or you can't really report about it honestly."

Tool's music is inspired through their band members spiritual exploration, understanding one's selfs, and trying to entirely loose one's ego. Isn't this what Bonnaroo is all about? Metallica puts on a great show but their lyrics and melodies are not near as deep as Tool's. Maynard's lyrics are close to the level of Jim Morrison's. Metallica goes all out with the pyro/flash stuff and lights but if i'm ragin on a head full of corn my vote goes to TOOL!!!
^I personally hold Maynard's lyrical abilities far, far above Morrison's... Morrison, imo, is one of the most horribly overrated lyricists ever.
My opinion of Jim's lyrics didn't get so high until I had watched "The Doors" with Val Kilmer on waaaayyyy to many "fun guys" I found out frolicking in some fields just north of Gainesville, Fl. Needless to say when I listen to Jim's lyrics now I kind of go to different place. His career definitely went downhill in a hurry sadly due to being a substance abuser.
I am a little biased about all of this because Tool is my absolute favorite band. I feel that their sound is incredibly original. They are masters at playing different time signatures at the same time as a band. They count how many measures it will take before the whole band is "back on the 1 together." That’s how they build all of the "pushing and pulling" type tension they have in almost every song. (Sorry, I'm a music dork)
I know that Maynard spends countless hours reading and studying so called "alternate forms of spirituality” and it is quite evident in his lyrics. They also indulge/eat a lot of the stuff that some of us like to munch on. I've seen them 3 times and it’s not a show, it's a life changing experience every time.
Metallica has huge fan base but I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that they are the same type of fan that Tool draws in, imo. By the way, I got tired at Metallica and went and took a nap so that I could go dance my donkey off at MMJ, Tiesto, and the Biscuits. ;D
I feel that Metallica played a more special set, that's why I chose them. Plus, they played my two favorite songs of theirs (And Justice..., and One).
Tool's show was amazing, no doubt. I just feel that they played a regular old Tool show, minus Tom coming out which took this from an average Tool set to a well above average set. Tool's music is more fulfilling of my tastes than Metallica, but I enjoyed Metallica's show more.
Still, though, both bands would find a place on my top 10 favorite artists/bands of all time list, more than likely side-by-side.
