I bet Ra Ra Riot plays in the thursday spot where MGMT played last year and the National played the year before. I can't think of another band that fits into the slot.
i've been making a roo 09 dream schedule using excel, and i too think that not only will ra ra riot play there this year, but they'd fit perfectly in roughly the same slot your talking about
on a side note: i've been reading that black kids have been called ''the next vampire weekend'', so on my excel schedule i just put them in the spot that vampire weekend had last year
i know it may not work out like that, but i think there's a small chance it could happen

MGMT are good. They made a great debut album (in my opinion) of psychedelic pop tunes that is really fun to listen to. Live they are okay....but they are trying to work on it. They know they aren't that amazing live and they plan on fixing that. In Rolling Stone there was a little blurb about how they've been watching DVD's of the Who and Zeppelin to try and come up with a better stage show.
I'd like to see them back......but only if they have a new album or something. Last year's show was good and saw them playing mostly their album plus their 14 minute song Metanoia. If they don't have much new material by Roo it would be kind of a waste to see them back. It would be like the same show as last year.
I feel like MGMT and Vampire Weekend won't be back.....unless they release new albums soon and plan a tour.
I do like MGMT.........but understand why some people can dislike/not care for them.

well, i've seen them a couple times now, and both times i've been very underwhelmed. i've never thought they sounded bad, but if you're going to play that kind of music, you need the stage show to back it. just my opinion. wouldn't keep me from roo
I enjoy MGMT, but I can certainly understand someone being underwhelmed. Their stage presence is, again, not the best - but at least they're working on it. I don't see them being at 'roo next year and it's a shame because I missed a lot of their show last year. Oh well.
I'd love to see The Allman Brothers redeeming themselves from canceling last year.
For a major rap artist I can imagine Common or The Roots back. Kanye West anyone? No? Well, ok.
i like them (MGMT), I do hate however how LOUD their album is. Have you ever had your music on shuffle and one of their songs comes on? They record has the volume way turned up. I was sure when I saw them they would suck, but Kids is just as good live as it is on record.

Same here. i've seen them twice and both times......nothing really special. It was nice to hear them play live.....hearing the songs i've grown to enjoy from the album. I was more impressed with the guy they had playing lead guitar than the two main guys from the band.
But I hold out hope. They say they want to work on it and that's a start. Also keep in mind that they were thrust into the spotlight rather fast because of a lot of hype. They went from dicking around and playing bars with weird songs they created to being on mag covers and going on tour. When they've been playing as long as groups like MMJ and Umphreys McGee then I feel like their stage act will be as good as theirs too.
Give them time and they will get better.
But I also would like to see them and Vampire Weekend take a break this year and maybe show up next year

this! i was so upset about the allman bros having to cancel last year. and common and the roots both put on awesome stage shows. the roots played a free show here in austin on UT's campus this past april. octopus project opened for them, and the roots played a 2 hour set...for free! so much fun. my heart lies with blackalicious, though.

Exactly. I love the album and live they were decent but I'm glad they were the opener when I saw them. I think I would have been disappointed if they were the main event.
I didn't think MGMT were that bad live. Of all the bands I saw on Thursday (which was only like three and a half sets, but still), they put on my favorite performance. I'd been told that their live shows kinda sucked, but there was enough jamming to keep me content. Of course, that could have just been due to the special chocolates I'd eaten earlier.
So, I have to step in and proclaim my love for MGMT once again. It's no secret that I love these guys so much and that they were one of my favorite shows of the weekend. I'm sure some of it had to do with the fact that I was looking very forward to them before the festival even started, I was front row, and was also excited for Battles and Vampire Weekend, but I still had a blast at their show. I don't really expect them to be back on the farm just yet, but I'd wait all day again to be as close to the stage as possible if they were.
Still, I can also see how some would be underwhelmed by their show, but I think it's just kind of natural that they have to figure out how to have presence on stage. It seems that a lot of bands have to go through the same process. To me, Andrew and Ben are a very talented duo and I hope that they continue to grow on people.

this is a good point. way back in 2002, i saw my morning jacket open for the doves in a relatively small club (gypsy tea room in dallas). yeah, my morning jacket opening for a british indie-pop band.
mmj still put on a great inspired set, but i felt that it didn't totally capture the magic of their album 'at dawn', which i was enthralled with. i feel like their live show has just gotten better and better over the years, and obviously now it's beyond reproach.
but hell, even if mgmt's not an established live act, i still had an awesome time partying to the awesomeness of songs like "electric feel" and "time to pretend" on the first night of roo. it's hard to mess those up. however, the thought of mgmt improving and expanding their live show to a flaming lips-esque affair (without totally copying the lips) makes me very happy inside.

Yeah. You get karma for seeing Doves and MMJ together. I saw a few shows on that Doves tour and all I got was Elbow. It took another year before I saw MMJ.
It would be great if G. Love and Special sauce could be there! And Cat Power! They've both played in Bonnaroo before; does that make them less, or more likely to show up again?

I like Cat Power but when I saw her at Roo this year I could barely hear anything she sang. I wasn't that far away either. I was disappointed.

Really? I thought she sounded awesome, and I could hear her just fine.
I was lying in a burned out basement With the full moon in my eyes. I was hoping for replacement When the sun burst thru the sky. There was a band playing in my head And I felt like getting high.

Maybe I was just in a really weird spot.
I think she has a tendency to be a little quiet. It wasnt at roo but last time I saw her the audience kept yelling for her mic to get turned up between songs. Once it was loud enough she put on a great show.

your post inspired me to see what's been up with doves lately, since they haven't released an album in like 4 years. apparently, they've finished work on their newest album, to be released in spring 2009. hmm.....

I actually feel the same, when I heard Cat Power was going to be at roo in 06 I was super excited, definitely one of my main priorities. But I was sooooo disappointed by the performance, I actually left early to check someone else out.
So when I saw Cat Power going going to be there again in 08 I decided to give it another shot and was again disappointed....so I have decided that I will just listen to chan marshall(that's her name, right?) on the albums....I LOVE cat power, just not live.

Yeah, she's pretty inconsistent live...but her '08 Bonnaroo performance was one of her best (even the critics lauded it).
