Something to keep in mind . . . Last year, when this happened with the Zeppelin/Metallica rumor, Superfly denied it all just 3 days later. If we don't hear from them (or Phish) soon, the rumor gains more strength.
first of all i just want to say that this is the first time i've posted in nearly 2 years. missed you guys. secondly thanks to phish i am now going to bonnaroo 2009. lets hope the rumors are true. but even if there not they still dragged me back to the farm again. can't wait for roo 09!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The reason people are going "apeshit" is because this is a message board and it's meant for discussion (and it's a realistic rumor)
My point was that we've now racked up 10 pages of posts in a little more than 24 hours, and it is entirely possible that we have the exact same amount of information we had 3 days ago. People think that because Rolling Stone published something on it, that the rumor is suddenly way more credible. When, in actuality, it may be the case that they have the same sources we've been referencing on this board for weeks. I bought into the Phish rumor a while ago, and I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from believing it, nor am I trying to discourage fervent discussion. I'm just pointing something out the fact that our actual "hard data" (if you will) on the Phish rumor might not have changed in size.
I sort of disagree. Phish rumors abound all the time. Some have legs. Some Don't. The Hampton Reunion rumor surfaced a good month and a half before the tour was announced. That rumor had legs. On the night before the reunion was announced, a stronger rumor with dates surfaced, causing many people, like myself, to book the town of Hampton solid before the announcement even hit.
It's not uncommon for rumors like this to surface, and then to go away. The difference is, much like the Hampton rumor, this one has persisted. This one has legs. It has enough legs that Rollingstone.com posted it. Rolling Stone has egg on their faces from being wrong and being shot down last time. Something tells me that they checked this rumor out before posting it.
I've been following Phish long enough to sort through the rumors that have no shot, and the ones that do have a shot. This one most definitely has a shot at being true. Everything lines up. The fact the Dyonysian Products (Phish's former management) is gone, and Red Light now manages them (Red Light is heavily involved in Bonnaroo). The fact that they need a place to play where everyone can get in. The fact that all the members of the band have played the festival in some capacity. The fact that the Bonnaroo model is tit for tat the Phish festival model rolled out into a multi-band festival. IT all lines up. Phish is a natural fit for the festival, and has been rumored to play many times in the past, as early as 2002. This is the very first time the rumor that Phish would play Bonnaroo actually has any legs.
Yes, Rollingstone.com was wrong about Led Zeppelin playing last year. What everyone misses about that one, is that they had Metallica on that rumor as well. The rumor was "inaccurate" according to superfly, but it actually turned out to be half true.
What I really think has happened here is that Superfly has leaked their big name headliner to Rolling Stone in order to sell tickets on their pre-sale. It's two weeks after the pre-sale started. The people who bought them early on, have likely all purchased theirs. Sales have likely tapered off. What better way to sell more, than to leak the information so that Phish fans who got shut out on Hampton have a real, tangible shot at getting tickets to a Phish show.
There are a lot of people around here who have only been to one or two Bonnaroos. Oh, you like Metallica and Pearl Jam, so you decided to check out the festival last year? Great. I'm glad you had a good time. But guess what? Bonnaroo is going to return to its roots this year and jam out. You don't like it? GO TO ANOTHER FESTIVAL. I'm sure Lolla will have some headliners you like (and there will probably be three of them). You already go to Lolla? Go to Coachella too. Phish playing two nights at 'roo is an homage to the fact that they are the band that made the festival possible.
There are a lot of people who left this community last year after the line-up came out. A lot of roo veterans dropped out and went to other festivals because Bonnaroo deviated from earlier years' jam formats. Hopefully, two nights of Phish will bring these people back. Bonnaroo used to have a vibe and an atmosphere that was parallel to none. 80,000 people on the same wavelength grooving along together. Last year, however, Bonnaroo was a strange amalgamation of different kinds of people. There was a much higher rate of d.ouche bags per capita last year. Maybe you were one of them. But now, with Phish playing two nights, Bonnaroo can return to its previous glory. There will crunchy granola heads everywhere. Thousands of people won't get robbed like they did this past year. And order will be restored to the world.
There are over 100 bands at 'roo every year. Why flip out because one band (who happens to be the biggest draw) gets two shows? I sat through Metallica. I sat through Tool. Now I'm getting those hours of my life back. Go ahead smite me.
As I've said before, I'm not really a big Phish fan. I would say I'm a casual fan at best. Never been to a Phish show, only have like 2 Phish albums in my catalog, and they aren't part of my regular rotations. But Phish at Bonnaroo sounds perfect to me, because it will bring the old crowd back.

not calling bull shit...infact i agree with you, and hope phish IS there, i did get tickets to hampton and roo so if they are thats 4-5 times i get to see phish this year........but everyone has a tangible shot due to the tour phish will have
.but everyone has a tangible shot due to the tour phish will have
That's actually sort of my point. It's better for them to leak this information now PRE-TOUR announcement. The fans that got shut out of hampton and are bitter about it may just jump at the opportunity to purchase a ticket to see Phish.
But if Bonnaroo announces Phish AFTER they announce a summer tour, some of those fans may just do the rest of the tour and skip Bonnaroo.
I know a lot of Phish fans who would come to Bonnaroo if Hannah Montana had a latenight slot, just to see 2 nights of Phish on the farm. I mean the what stage is a pretty amazing stage setup, and to see phish there....

The Phish rumors were legit before Rolling Stone posted about it. They're getting back together. Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon have played several Bonnaroos. It just makes sense. Will it happen? No one knows. Is it likely? Yes

I also think it is worth noting that every year rumors surface which eventually pan out. In 06 it was Radiohead and Tom Petty, 07 it was The Police, 08 it was metallica.
To that end, no other viable rumorsn have surfaced regarding the 09 fest. I am not saying this is proof positive that the Phish rumors are true, but it is worth noting that the rumors have a track record of panning out. To be honest, the Zepp rumor is the only one I can think of that never panned out, and that one was shot down almost immediqtely by the festival organizers.

As much as I hate it, I'm pretty sure the Phish rumor is true this year while the Springsteen rumor is untrue.
Led Zeppelin > Radiohead > NIN > Metallica > Madonna > Britney Spears > Hannah Montana > Jonas Brothers > Kanye West > A fork to the eye > death > Phish

I've never listened to Phish, I'm sorry to say. But if this rumor turns out to be true, I guess I should prepare myself for the show(s). What is a good album to start with?

(PSST... I just spent 2 days going through their discography. Still wondering where the good album is.)

Try their live albums and shows. I can't stand their studio work but their live stuff is incredible.

Everyone has to admit, this thread is pretty funny with all the polarizing opinions, music-listening demands, and back-and-forth talk of what Bonnaroo should/is all about... I've been lurking here the past couple of years, and dabbled with posting a few times, but I'd thought I'd give my own opinion on Bonnaroo's 'direction' and Phish.
I love Bonnaroo, always have and most likely always will. It encapsulates so many different genres of music all in a 4 day span of fun, and it leaves the festival-goer with the freedom to do almost anything they please. There are over one hundred-and-something bands that play every year, and one thing I have learned is to NEVER judge any lineup based on the headliners. Those spots take up roughly 10 hours out of the entire weekend. Those of you who are devoted to Roo did not get so based on the headliners (although many have been amazing) Roo gets every year. Instead, you most likely found that dedication through the festival itself.
Superfly has this down to a science a way Phish was never able to do. They are the premier music festival in the country for a reason, and a headlining spot(s) will not change Superfly's formula in determining their eclectic lineup. Even if Phish headlines, there will still be the crazy amount of diversity as there has been since 2006.
Having said this, I want to bring up some misguided arguments I've read in the thread:
First, some people just will never like Phish. It's not that they haven't listened enough, it's simply not their cup of tea. Phish fans need to deal with this. I love Phish 'almost as much' as the 100-show vet, but music taste is not something you can suddenly force upon somebody. Some like structured songs, some like advanced improvisation (noodling to others)
Second, Phish headlining two nights does not equal Superfly suddenly retreating back to the jam-band formula. As I explained above, it's a huge festival that usually has something for everyone. Sure, we'd all like to personally choose who appears at the farm every year, but it obviously doesn't work that way. The festival still is a business, and it needs to make money. After struggling to sell out last year, and combining the ominous outlook for the economy next year, Superfly needs to do something to spur ticket sales. Phish headlining does this without compromising the festival. Some will like it, some won't, but this does not mean you will have less to choose from during the weekend.
Third, this rumor has so much more legitimacy than the LZ rumor for a few reasons. For one, this has been rumored in the Phish community going as far back as 1 NOV. It seems the same people who tipped off the Phish-Hampton announcement are also hearing Bonnaroo as the other planned gig. Apparently, Rolling Stone itself has sources close to Phish as well that seem to point in the same direction. Of course nothing will be confirmed until February, but it seems more grounded than LZ playing Roo.
Sorry to suddenly drop by, but I just couldn't resist after reading through the first couple of pages of the thread.

Exactly. I actually do like listening to Phish though..that is I like listening to Phish when I have trouble going to sleep.

This all makes perfect sense economically, which makes the rumor more credible to me. Bonnaroo is happening this year during a time of economic hardship, and last year Rothbury pulled a lot of people away. Many folks can only afford one festival. What better way to guarantee that you have the hottest festival? I think it's going down.
What I really think has happened here is that Superfly has leaked their big name headliner to Rolling Stone in order to sell tickets on their pre-sale. It's two weeks after the pre-sale started. So, I suppose our point of contention is that you believe Rolling Stone has inside info, and I believe Rolling Stone is just rehashing the rumors that are already swirling.
I think it is HIGHLY unlikely that Superfly would like headliner information like that. A) When I leaked the line-up in 2007, they were not happy. Unveiling the line-up is a big deal to them, and (from my direct contact with them) I can assure you they were not very keen on their any part of their line-up going public before they were ready to.
B) More importantly. It doesn't really do them any good to leak the Phish info. Sure, it will help perpetuate early ticket sales. But the festival is going to sell out one way or another. They don't need to do anything more to sell tickets, they know they have a sell-out on their hands.
C) Most importantly. The Rolling Stone article says, "RollingStone.com hears from reliable sources close to Phish that the band will top the bill for two nights". If Superfly or AC Entertainment had leaked the info it would have said "sources close to Bonnaroo". But it doesn't. The article explicitly states that the source is Phish's people, not Bonnaroo's people.

you guys are gunna hate me but im not a huge phish fan. And this sounds exactly like the zeplin rumors. Lets shoot for seger, dmb, mmj, kol, oar... bad fish would be sick too. let me know what you guys think.

I disagree with the Zeppelin comparisons. This rumor seems more logical and reasonable than the Zep rumor last year. I do agree however that MMJ and Badfish would be the shit. I just saw Badfish recently at the Valarium in Knoxville, TN, and they rocked some faces. They would be a good late night option.

"But the festival is going to sell out one way or another. They don't need to do anything more to sell tickets, they know they have a sell-out on their hands. "
It didn't sell out last year, not even close. Now we're looking at a severe economic downturn in 2009, and it would seem that from a business standpoint, you would need something to spur ticket sales.
