There will be as much variety in the 2 shows Phish plays as you will get the entire weekend seeing many different bands"
I may not be well versed in the ways of Phish, but are you saying that Phish alone has the diversity of all the bands that could possibly be at 'Roo put together? Last year I checked out Sharon Jones, Against Me!, The Sword, Talib Kweli, Pearl Jam, Tiesto, and Alison Krauss to name a few... are you saying Phish alone will span this diversity? Because if so, then by all means bring on the Phish. I kind of doubt this could be possible however, so I'm going to assume you've gotten a bit fanatical. Anyway....
All we're trying to say is that we want diversity in our headliners. The beauty of Bonnaroo is that if you don't like something, there's usually something else to check out. I'm fine with ONE night being something I don't really care about, but forcing TWO nights of the same band headlining blows. That's why I want their second set to be latenight, at least that way I'll have something else to check out.
/before you smite me, please realize I didn't say anything negative about Phish, just that I personally don't want to see them twice.
I have to argue this because I believe it:
You should like Phish more.
There it is... the elephant in the room. Why don't you like Phish? The Phish fests of the late 90's paved the way for the Bonnaroo experience. This alone is reason enough to give them 2 nights (though I'll certainly take a late night slot... I just think you should too). Outside of that, you should be excited with us! Most people who don't like Phish I find simply haven't heard a lot of it, and what they did hear was the wrong song in the wrong circumstances.
Do this for me: Obtain the album "Rift"... I don't care how. Listen to it with some nice headphones while you work out / sip a scotch, do whatever you do to wind down and give it a real shot. Then, whether you liked it or not, get the album "Junta" and listen to that. Then just go ahead and get the rest of them so that you can sing along with the rest of us come June.
i don't care if they paved the way for bonnaroo or whatever. their music is still terrible. that's why i don't like phish. i had a friend who went through a phish phase and made me listen to many of their studio albums and live shows and it was all just annoying. it's not that hard to understand how people don't like them. it's just not some people's cup o tea.
If this rumor turns out to be true, then Bonnaroo definitely earned a ton of karma from me because I think the vibe of this kind of line-up definitely takes them back to basics in a big way, especially after what happened this last year. This kind of line-up is really the only way to top themselves while maintaining their core fanbase.
I think it's plausible Phish will play, but I still think it's just a rumor. I wouldn't exactly trust a "music" magazine that has Brad Pitt on the cover

well, if Phish headlines, I won't be seeing them, but whatever. There's tons of bands on a lineup. I mean, I couldn't care less when WSP was announced for last year. The only beef I would have is the 2 nights of Phish. Festivals are for seeing a bunch of different bands. If you need that much Phish, go to one of their own shows. Just my opinion
OK let's look at this another way. Does anyone really think it would be above Superfly to leak this rumor just to boost early bird sales? I mean, come on. Phish just announced their reunion, people are getting antsy about festival lineups, there's been alot of talk about the possibility of Phish at Roo. It doesn't take a genius to realise what a little harmless rumor would do for marketing.
Not saying that's definitely the case. Just saying, don't get too excited until the lineup comes out.
your quite the optimist
Just trying to be realistic. I remember all too vividly being extra excited last year around this time, then being terribly disapointed soon after.
Honestly and I do love Phish, if it is two nights it will be a headliner and a latenight, or for all we know the superjam will be phish covering another band ala halloween shows. I still think folk are going to have three different headliners so I wouldn't worry to much until the lineup comes out.
On an aside Phish covering the White Album again for the Superjam would be the bewbs

Some karma for being a sensible fellow Winnipegger.

Sorry, but i feel two nights of Phish would deprive us of some other worthy headliners. Nine Inch Nails would be perfect for Bonnaroo and they will be going on hiatus later next year. And the potential length of a Phish headlining slot would most likely rule out a late night dance/ electronic act (Daft Punk, Chemical Bros, etc.) on the main stage. If the organizers choose to go this route there'd better be some awesome comedians and mid-size music acts as well. And if we only get two headliners for the three slots in 2009 then the headliners in 2010 would need to be pretty interesting and varied as well.
I really don't think Superfly will give Phish two spots, but I wouldn't be surprised if they end up jamming at 4 AM at Which/What Stage without telling anyone after/before they play their scheduled slot. I don't think Superfly would have two slots for them, especially because any headliner at Roo typically plays alone, right? So if Phish is a headliner, and they are scheduled to take the stage twice, then there's just another empty slot for the not-so-diehard Phish fans.
I'm down with the idea of two nights for Phish as long as it doesn't force Superfly to book less acts. I'll simply go somewhere else when Phish plays the second time, unless it's a spur of the moment thing like I said above, that'd be sweet. Imagine being somewhere besides the Phish show at Roo, you'd pretty much have the whole farm to yourself!
All you Phish fans need to relax, honestly. Your trying to force your musical taste onto others, and that sucks Replying with "maybe you should goto lolla" or saying Phish doesn't need any explanation simply because it's Phish is just silly. First, screw lolla, seriously. Second, there are alot of other successful and innovative bands out there, Phish is not the greatest band to grace this planet with their presence. I know your not saying that, but that's how it comes off to people. Oh and it's a little annoying telling people that Bonnaroo wouldn't exist without Phish. I know, we all know, we're all proud that you know, and I hope Phish knows it. But that has nothing to do with the MUSIC. That's what I care about, and I want to see as much of it as I can when I'm at the farm.
P.S. - I love your passion, I would be the same way if Richard Wright had not died and the rumor was Pink Floyd rather than Phish. I'm just letting you know that some of you are being a bit overzealous and sounding like the stereotypical-douche Phish fans that are on the other boards. This is big news, but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for other bands like alot of other people on these forums.
Stallion, as a Zappa fan I am suprised you are not a Phish fan as well.
Let me clarify that my decision not to go (which is by no means final) is not a knee-jerk reaction to Phish rumors but is due to other extranious factors. I honestly wouldn't mind seeing Phish at Roo (I've never seen them before), I do like some of the songs.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
Hey, Beau, what's your opinion on this? I didn't quite catch it.
Funny how these are the same people that were worried Metallica and Kanye would bring douchebags to the farm last year. You're proof there's douchebags in every crowd regardless of musical taste.

"but it's still just a rumor until that lineup comes out. Nothing is definite "
ya, ill give rollingstone about a 50/50 shot at being accurate
DEFINITELY THIS!!
Remember...rolling stone was on the LZ bandwagon last year full bore...and the Roo lineup is a VERY closely held secret....usually any leaks come from the artists themselves...NOT getting found out by the media.

A few things
--AWESOME!! The prospect of Phish playing Roo has me already scrounging for funds to buy early birds VIA payment plan!
--I wouldn't compare the LZ rumor to the Phish rumor from last year. LZ STILL has not played another show, and its looking like they won't ever again. Phish has announced the reunion, and a tour to follow. The LZ rumor: It was started by a dude who writes a blog about the music business. I subscribe to his blog, and let me tell you something, if you read it everyday like I do, you would understand why the LZ rumor from last year was BS. The guy shits out of his mouth for a living. Nothing more. IMO no comparison. Bob Lefletz=very not-credible source.
--Rolling Stone rumoring this takes balls, and like someone said. They effed up huge last year with a bogus leak, I'm pretty sure they'd play it a bit smarter this year and avoid looking like jackasses. They are the biggest music magazine in the world, and have been for what, the past 38 years or so? I'm just saying.
--Bruce Sprinsteen?! Helllllls ya!
--I'd also like to think that there WILL most definitely be a third headliner. Because as said before, Phish should play standard headliner set, then a Sat. late night, hopefully with the Allman Brothers leading into that set, and the Bruce closing out the festival. OR! Maybe the Bruce opens it up on Fri, then ABB>Phish latenight, then Phish closes out the fest. The possibilities are endless!!! All in all, the Allmans, I'm projecting, WILL make up for last year... ;D
--To anyone who thinks the diversity of the festival is in question, and thinks it will be too "jammy" now because of the Phishy possibility, is sadly mistaken. This is a MUSIC fesival, and Superfly has proven that over the past few years with their increasingly diverse lineups. I still expect no less than 3+ metal bands, 10+ hipster, pitchfork-flavor-of-the-month bands, 4+ "WTF are they doing on the lineup" bands, 5+ hip-hop artists, 10+ Legends, and at least one guy who plays nothing more than a laptop and makes you dance your donkeys off till 4am... etc. etc. etc. Why?, because thats how Bonnaroo ROLLS! ;D
--And finally my favorite part of reading all of these threads was seeing everyone who was all "Eff Bonnaroo" jumping right back on at the pure possibility of Phish playing Bonnaroo. Love it! I'm glad to see yous guys back! The farm is gonna be a godddamn blast this year!!!! ;D ;D
The only that doesn't make sense about the Phish/Springsteen rumor is Springsteen closing Sunday. He easily qualifies as the biggest Sunday closer Roo has ever had.
Now I just can't wait for the inevitable "There-Is-Going-To-Be-A-Thursday-Headliner" rumor to start.

(all of this IMO of course)
whoa whoa whoa. I haven't jumped back on. I'm kind of hoping this isn't true, because I don't intend to go back to Roo, and this would prob draw me back. I really don't want my first Phish show to be in that setting, but I don't see how I could turn it down. I'm conflicted about it already, and it's not even a definite issue yet.

It's called a statement. The wagon has started rolling, and it has been gaining more and more all day. ;D

maybe try lolla?
i do go to lolla, thanks. i enjoy it. i also happen to attend and enjoy bonnaroo as well.

Wow, I did not expect Phish to be so...polarizing. I would have thought I was in the vast minority of people who aren't excited by this possibility. Anyway, I definitely agree with all those in the don't-count-your-Phish-eggs-yet camp. But I do think it's sort of cute how easily we all get excited. It really speaks to the general optimistic nature of Bonnaroo-type people. We could have gotten all cynical after what happened last year and refused to believe anything we hear from anybody, but that hasn't happened at all.
