How do you know she chose those shows? Maybe her boyfriend bought her a ticket and dragged her along.
Phish isn't as significant a presence in some people's lives as it is in others. I'm not dissing the band or its fans, but I can certainly understand why people get irritated with what seems like fanaticism at times.
So waht? It's most likely her first show. I saw Bisco last week and I can't tell you any of their names. At least she knows Mike Gordon's nasty on bass even though she didn't know who he was.
while I'm going to agree with you, I'm also going to say that she maybe could have boned up on some Phish knowledge before going.
If you wanted to make Hampton your first ever shows, that's fine, but also recognize that you are extremely lucky and should show the band some respect by at least knowing their names.
It's not the fact that it was her first shows that bothers me, it's the fact that she chose those shows and didn't bother to even care enough to learn their names..
yeah, I've been to first shows for other bands before and not known every name of every band member, but these shows were extremely significant. They were not normal run of the mill shows. I view it as sort of disrespectful.
I don't know if I'd view it as disrespectful but I do agree that it's pretty strange that she was at one of the biggest Phish shows ever and didn't even know the members of the band.
I don't think not knowing a band member's name is disrespectful. Incessant talking, obnoxious behavior and throwing glowsticks on stage when someone's performing? That's disrespectful.
Well I have been to more than one dead show, andsaid something along the lines of Phil's amazing tonight, and just gotten a blank llok from whoever I said it to. That is a much bigger sin than not knowing Mikes name in my book.

At the Ben Harper show at Roo 07 when JPJ came out on stage, some girl next to me... WEARING A FREAKIN ZEPPELIN SHIRT... asked the guy next to her "Who's that on stage? What'd he say his name was?"
So yeah... there are idiots at every show. I'm not huge on knowing band members names really either. Only when it comes to my favorite bands do I take the time to look into it

yeah, that's fine and dandy, but she should know the names of the band if she's going to the shows of the decade as far as Phish is concerned.
I know if I were to drag my girlfriend who isn't into Phish to Hampton, I'd tell her all about the band on the way there. Not that I'd do that anyway.. Personally, I don't see the point in bringing someone to those shows that didn't know anything about Phish. Wait for summer tour to introduce them. Let people who have been waiting years to see them go see them at Hampton.
and I'm not saying that only vets should have been there, but I am saying that the people that should have been in the mothership should have been straight up fans, and not completely new people.
whatever, I'm just a little perturbed.
EDIT: and furthermore, yeah, I'm a phanatic, yeah, I'm passionate about this band, yeah I'll welcome all new people that I see and meet during the shows I'm seeing...
I'm just saying those shows were very important to a lot of people, and it's a little frustrating to hear that on a recording when you weren't there, and wanted so badly to be there.

I knew the name John Paul Jones and knew his contributions......but that doesn't mean I know exactly what he looks like. I would only be able to recognize him now because of seeing him at Roo.....otherwise i'd walk right past him on the street.

This is an example of the thought process of what some consider to be 'elitist' Phish fans. Trying not to single you out terrapin, bc the rest of your posts suggest otherwise. But if it's ok to see Band X and not know their names but "disrespectful" if it happens at Phish, that's putting them on a pedastal.
If I pay 50+ to see a band, it's their job to make me want to go out and by their records and read up about them. Something Phish is among the best in the game at.
If they only wanted to be playing to fans who know the name of the guy who makes Trey's guitars, they wouldn't be playing Bonnaroo.

True true - however, in her defense, I will say that I usually can't recognize musicians just by their faces. For instance, Radiohead is one of my all-time favorite bands, but if I ran into them on the street, the only one who I would blink twice at would be Thom. However, to be wearing a Zep shirt and not even recognize the name John Paul Jones, well, that's just sad.

I don't think suggesting that people who are in attendance of a sold out reunion show, for which tickets were going for $800+ on ebay as the date approached, being the first time the band has played together in years should atleast be familiar with band member names is an example of that "elitist Phish attitude."
Especially since Mike Gordon has gone on his own in past years, released albums, and performed....

well, you're sort of missing my point..
any other shows, ANY other shows if that were to happen and I were to over hear it, I'd turn to the person, say something like "that's Mike Gordon! GORDO!!!" and smile and turn away.
I have nothing against new people. I'm excited for all the new ones popping their phish cherries, but those specific shows were very very important to a lot of people, me included.
It would be the same if, hypothetically, the Beatles could reform and reunite, play three really anticipated shows, I couldn't get into them and then on the recording I hear someone say "who's the guy with the round glasses again??"
it would piss me off, simply because I really wanted to be there, and someone who has no clue about where they are and what major significance it is got to go.
I know I'm being slightly elitist in saying that, but trust me, I'm not a snob, and I'll be happy to party with a bunch of newbies at Bonnaroo. Like I said, I welcome new people, and will be cordial to every single one I meet. If they ask me questions, I'll be more than happy to answer all of them.
I'm more so just upset that I didn't get to go to Hampton, I think that's really what it boils down to.
Wah wah wah other people aren't as big fans of music as me wah wah they don't know the name of the bassist wah wah she didn't know who John Paul Jones was wah wah it should have been ME at Hampton!
Baawwwwwwwwwwww.
Well, I for one would rather spend a day with an elitist Phish phan than somebody with this attitude. That's all I'm gonna say about that!

I definitely get where you're coming from. Now, some of my favorite bands are bands that I got into by seeing in concert when I knew little to nothing about them - My Morning Jacket, Porcupine Tree, Umphrey's McGee, et cetera - but yeah, I do think that Hampton should have been just for the true fans. The other shows on the tour, well, whatever, but I do think those first shows should have been something special for their hardcore base. And I really don't care if you got into them 25 years ago or 25 days ago, as long as you love the music that they're playing. I guess what I'm saying is that if you're lucky enough to go to one of the most anticipated reunions of the decade, then you owe it to yourself to at least educate yourself on them a bit.
There is no point trying to get pissed off at richies scoring tix who dont even know their names. Its their loss. But Phish Reunion 2009 does not equal a hypothetical Beatles circa 1979 reunion. never. in any universe. on any planet. in any continent, country, city, or province! I mean Zeppelin could get up and reunite on a giant plateau in the desert and it wouldnt be a bigger deal.

My beef isn't with you terrapin. I totally see your point, and see how that could annoy somebody. But to be offended by somebody sayin the word's "the bass player" at a Phish show is jusst silly. Maybe right before she said, Mike looks as good as he did when I saw him back in '98, and the guy next to her said 'which one's that again'. And she responded the bass player.
If the mic picked up her talking to her friends about Myspace on her phone or some BS, that's reason to get upset. The fact that she mentioned the bass player points out she's paying attention/enjoying the shows.
When I first started listening to Phish, I thought Mike and Gordon were 2 different people, bc one roomate referred to him as Mike, the other as Gordon. Is that a sin?
Maybe her bf scored tix to all 3 shows, took Phishhead friends to 2 and his gf to another.
Maybe she's got her master's in music from Berkely and is a huge jazz buff, and wanted to check out what Phish was all about.
At the time tix went on sale, those were the only 3 shows announced. At that point, you had to look at it as what could possibly be yourr last chance to see Phish. And if you live near Hampton, what show are you going to get tickets for?
As far as reading up on the band or whatever, maybe she listened to bootlegs non-stop from the time she got her ticket to the time she got to the show and really didn't care what the dude's name was.
Like i said terrapin, I see why this could be annoying to some but it's different to be vocal about it and making people feel like they don't deserve to be there.
ANY other shows if that were to happen and I were to over hear it, I'd turn to the person, say something like "that's Mike Gordon! GORDO!!!" and smile and turn away.

yeah i agree with the whole who gives a fuck if you know their names, do you like the music?
ill admit i didnt know all the biscuits members by name when i saw them, but i did for sure afterwards. I was actually very confused about who "Barber" was because i knew the guitarist was Jon Gutwillig. I still dont even know where the name the barber came from, any help?
^^^^ Ok Terrapin what you say is definately a bit of the elitist attitude people talk about here reguarding Phish but I understand where you are coming from in reguards to these particular shows. But that said I don't think it fair to come down on this particular women or anyone who is being newly introduced to the band. Because in all honesty who are you to say who should see what band and when. I understand the frustration of not being able to get a tic for a certain show you want to attend but to be angry at some random person for them being able to go is childish and condescending. Like someone else said I am much more pissed at the person or group who has no respect for the band at the show and talks or yells through the show disturbing everyone who is actually there for the show. Like the group of early 20-somethings who sauntered next to me during Phil last year and proceeded to talk, try and muscle in on my space and just generally annoy the living hell out of me. I realise you may not know the band and maybe your at the set to try it out (which is what fests are about-finding that new band to love and thats all cool) but if you ARE there have respect for the band and the fans who are triing to enjoy the show...and shut the ..ck up !!!!
I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name right---P.T. Barnum "As I was walking up the stairs I met a man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today I wish to God he'd go away."

Having attended the first two nights of Hampton, I'm definitely excited for what they're inevitably going to bring to Bonnaroo. It was an absolute blast both nights. I'm just hoping they bring a Forbin > Mockingbird with them in June.

^ I guess so. And by the way those were not the Phish shows of the decade. The phish shows of the decade are: 6/12/09 and 6/14/09 and little ms "I dont know mike gordons name' will be in Virginia somewhere. So take pleasure in that.
