i might be overcramming my small car with my roo crew. anyone know of any cheap deal roof rack box things i can buy to put some of our stuff in?
I used to have a soft Samsonite roof carrier, kind of like a big duffle bag for the top of the car. Samsonite doesn't make them anymore put something like, www.traveloasis.com/rooftop-cargo-carriers.html looks pretty similar. The nice thing is that they fold up and can be stored easily. The one I had was weather resistant but not completely water proof, after driving through 12 hours of rain some water soaked through so I'd just bag anything that couldn't get wet.
Like Leo said, a soft carrier is probably your best bet -- especially if you don't want to spend the cash on a hard shell that you won't be using on a regular basis. I have a Thule one that straps down to my roof rack (yeah, admittedly, that makes things easier) and has worked great in the couple times I've utilized it. And yes, easy storage is a big plus for something that I pull out very, very rarely.
Even the nicest ones won't be entirely waterproof, but I'd toss down the extra couple bucks for an established brand (Thule, Samsonite, etc.).
i just got a ez-up type canopy w/ half side shield at k-mart for $60. haven't set it up yet but i plan on it today. ill let you guys know how it seems to hold up.
Yes, let us know how it holds up! K-mart has two different canopies for $69.99 on their website but they aren't in stock. I may run by a store tomorrow to see what I can find...

i have had it up for 3 days now and in some fairl strong wind. it held up well. simple setup too. the only complain is the 1/22 side shield that came with it is not secure at all. crappy velcro straps but i am buying the side walls for it and i have clamps just in case i run into the same issue with cheap straps. this is the one i got. Quik Shade 10 ft. x 10 ft. Shade Tech 64 Canopy. overall its a great buy.
^^ I just went to K-mart and bought one! It looks just like the canopy that we had last year. It held up really well at Bonnaroo but was destroyed in a storm later in the summer (my friend left it outside all night). The shade/shield thing was a pain, we ended up taking ours off last year and just putting a sheet up.
My EZ up was destroyed this past summer also. I picked up a nice one at Sam's Club (10x10e-z up brand, replaceable parts, 4 side walls, $200)
Anyway, I'll fight the wind this year. I don't think I'll have to worry unless a dust devil makes a direct hit. I bought 8 of those big screws that you put in the ground to tie a dog up to (aww poor doggie! I wouldn't do that but some people do....) 4 for the legs where stakes normally go and 4 for guy-lines from the canopy to the ground.

screw the roof, use this if you can
None of my cars have a hitch rack. Your best bet is to get a strap on soft cargo bag. Put everything in trashbags before you put them in the cargo bag. This will keep you stuff dry. Yakima and Thule both have decent low-priced solutions.
I went to kmart 2day and found some camping gear on clearance. If I needed a tent they had a 8 person w/ 3 divider walls and a screen porch for 100 bucks. I'm looking at the ez-up shades and there is such a price difference from 30 to 175. I'm confused on which way 2 go...
Oh my god I am so glad I read this - steepandcheap.com is fantastic and I am now completely addicted. Finally saw a deal today for the perfect Sierra Designs tent - got it with the footprint for $115 (the tent is selling for $240 plus $40 for the footprint on amazon.com) - so happy!
Backcountry.com is great too, think I'll be ordering from there as well...
wish I could dole out more karma!

Usually any ez-up will do fine as long as it has the cross-bracing for sturdiness (and I think they all do.) But check close. Usually the $30 canopies are not ez-ups and come in about 20 pieces that need to be assembled. I used one of these my 1st 3 Roos and it worked fine but is somewhat of a hassle to put together. Ez-ups are worth the extra money.

I've made the mistake of staring at Steep and Cheap today whilst being broke. My new rule is to not load the site unless I have plenty of cash. Luckily I get my paycheck at tomorrow.
Got a great deal on a camelbak at chainlove. Those sites are too addicting! I shouldn't even be spending my money but getting like 60% off is nice. Karma for the sharing of those sites.
Ok so this question isn't so much about supplies so excuse my newness, but my hubby is wanting to bring his air brush gun and some body paint. Is that allowed? I'd hate to get searched and that not be allowed since its kinda expensive we couldn't just throw it out. Also hope this is ok. We were also wanting to bring a cracker and a few cases of whip-its-is it cool to walk around with balloons?? Thanks!!
^^^This guys store has some pretty good deals, got a 6 person coleman tent for like 60 with shipping, queen air mattress for 20. Don't bid things up too high, he does second chance offers a lot.

The airbrush is fine. In fact, its encouraged. I would just put it somewhere out of sight when you pack. The only reason they might not let you bring would be because they might think you are trying to run a business without a permit. I know there are people who airbrush others for money have have booths set up. I'm sure those guys paid the vendor's fee. I think you'll be fine as long as you don't charge people - or at least don't charge them out in the open.
Just hide the airbrush for the search - if they find it and ask just tell them you have it for personal use - not commercial use.
I don't know about "walking around" with balloons. You're fine to at your campsite or sneak them into Centeroo at night and crack a few. NO is really the only thing that the security people (on horses) out in the camp grounds look for. They are usually more concerned with the dealer who has a tank than they person with the balloon. But if they see you with a balloon they will tell you to drop it and ask you where you got it.
Thanks guys. I figure if we have walls on our ez-up we will be good. wish I had a way to tell you guys where I'd be so I could invite you over. We will be cooking a bunch of food one night and you guys are welcome to come by! Follow your nose...lol
Sportsman's Guide is always a good place to find great gear cheap. Do check the items price on the internet though. Sometimes you will find it a bit cheaper, but not very often.
Just went to my local Kmart and they had some stuff on sale. Pretty good deals. They had a screened tent for about $30. It is normally over $50. they had a ton of other items too. Looks like they were making room for the new stuff.

And if you plan on spending very much money it is recommended to join the buyers club. It's like 10-20 bucks for a year and you get like 5-10% off of everything. Not sure on the numbers, but I know my parents used to be members and it paid for itself.
I was in EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports) today looking at camel baks for 'Roo. An employee informed me of a 'Club Day'. Basically all you have to do is prove that you are in some sort of athletic or outdoors club, whether it be with a college or whatever, and you can get 20% off one regular priced item. He said the sale will be sometime in the middle of April. Check it out.
