I lived in New Orleans during Katrina. Bush's lack of action in this event was a national digrace.
sure this was not a good moment for bush, but lets not forget the other leaders...nagin (mayor of new orleans) knew that a powerful hurrican was on its way, and he did nothing...there are pictures of school and city buses underwater...all those vehicles could have been ordered by nagin to take people away to safety, but instead they were underwater...also, it was reported that MANY (NOT ALL) people given some sort of financial help spent their money on big screen tvs, tattoos, jewelery, etc...they are the people saying that bush didnt help them, but when help was given it was squandered away on trivial things
sorry for the multiple posts, but i am unaware of how to quote multiple quotes in one post
just because other leaders were at fault in NO WAY lets Bush or his cronies off the hook
and please link a quote from a person who bought a tatoo with their financial assistance that is bitching about not getting help
most of the people bitching are bitching about THEIR HOMES... that's not a trivial thing
Face it. Bush screwed the pooch... on most everything.

please know that i am not trying to let bush, or his "croonies", off the hook...he messed up royally, and deserves the criticism for this incident...my point is that everyone blames bush for what happened, but nobody wants to put blame on the other people that deserve it as well
also, anybody remember nagin saying something to the effect of "were gonna make this city a chocolate city again"...kinda sounds a little racist to me
anywho, my lunch break is over, so no more posts until a little later
alyroo--i believe my source for the tattoos, big screens, etc was a local newspaper...however, i will do my best to find it and prove it (it will probably take some time, so do not think my lack of response is that i have no proof)
IThey care about the ideology that allows them to buy what they want and run their businesses without being bothered by concerns of their communities.
and what is wrong with this...one makes money to provide for their needs and desires...if one should own a business, it should be THEIR responsibility of how to run it, not government
TOTALLY disagree with you here. Everyone needs to be concerned about one's community. If all you do is make as much money as possible and squirrel it away in your mattress and ignore the world around you, I'm sorry, but you are a horrible person.
Actually, no. I'm not sorry. When one chooses to live in society, you have an obligation to that society. You pay your taxes, you care about your fellow human beings. You help them out when need be.
If you have the good fortune to make a lot of money, you should be so grateful that you want to help out others. If you have skills that helped you succeed, why not pass along that knowledge to someone else? If you got rich from dumb luck, pass along a little of that to someone not as fortunate.
I saw on the news this morning that Bloomberg gave away 200 some million dollars last year to charity. He still has PLENTY of money. It's like $50 to me would hurt the same as $500 to someone who makes a heck of a lot more. So there will always be the haves and the have-nots, but everyone needs to give back in some way.
If you don't want to (or can't) give away your money, what about your time? Volunteer - could be at a soup kitchen, could be your kid's PTA, could be doing something for your next door neighbor.
Pick up the crumpled newspaper someone else dropped.
If you don't want to do any of these things, then you need to isolate yourself from the rest of society. Go live in a little cabin in the woods and grow your own food and live without electricity or indoor plumbing. Only then should you be allowed to not care about your community.

Sorry, I'm coming in late, BUT....
You're right! They should do what ever the fuck they want. Screw the little people, screw the community in which their business exists, screw the environment. Give me a freakin' break!
dude you can totally avoid that problem now! Suddenly all the republicans on inforoo can voice their opinions in peace! ;D
as stated before, i am not republican...however, i am more conservative than many of you..also, i didnt drink the obama juice and believe all the horse sh*t
anybody hear on tv that one obama-supporter said something to the effect of "if i cant pay my mortgage, obamas gonna pay it. if i cant pay for gas, obamas gonna pay for it."...just goes to show the ignorance of some of his supporters (im not refering to anyone on here, unless you believe obama is going to pay your mortgage and gas)
Tell me what that "juice" was? Tell me what the horse shit was? You sure sound like a GOP strategist, because all you're doing is spouting off the typical GOP dogma.

Gee - such a friendly happy place where everyone is welcome.
C'mon, Meg. We've had words before, and we always get past it. Everyone is welcome to their opinion, but I'd like Jigawig to back up the statements with more than catchphrases and soundbites.

Oh I know we always get past it - I just wish there was more discussions about politics instead of name throwing and the blame game.
Those of that are more conservative know we are in the minority on this board. I keep an open mind in these discussions - I always like learning new things and there are alot of people on this board that are more politically savvy then I am.
In my mind the "juice" he is referring to is the same "juice" that any poltical candidate spouts when running for election. The whole "we need change" thing. Only time will tell if Obama is the change we need. In alot of way - I hope he is because this country is going downhill really fast at this point as far as the economy is concerned.
I agree. Pretty depressing watching the news last night. Something like 100,000 more jobs lost just yesterday. My point on riding Jigawig is the "soud bites". If I want that, I'll just turn on the news. Here, I too would like/expect a little deeper discussion.
Beyond the economy, my biggest concern is Iran. I heard on CBS, over the weekend I think, that they will have a nuclear weapon sometime this year. I don't know if they would be stupid enough to use it on Israel, but I'd believe they would sell it to someone like Hamas. IMO, we need to open up diplomatic channels. You have to talk to them. You have to make in-roads with the people. I've seen many shows where it would appear the people do not share the fundamentalist attitudes of their leaders. I think it would be a big mistake to start with bombing when we could first try diplomacy. As Tom Clancy says, probably taken from someone else, "War should always be the final tool of diplomacy, not the first."

I'm a HUGE Obama supporter, totally drank the Kool-Aid, and still completely agree with you that only time will tell how good he is.

This very same thing could be said about Bush. You dont really know how good a president was until about 10 years after he is gone anyways. I'll be the first to admit, I'm republican, but Bush did some really really fvcked up sh!t. But he's not the only one responsible for what happened over the last 8 years.
p.s. - I voted for Obama. But look out for good ole Jeb!!

See - I understand where you are coming from as far as opening diplomatic channels but I am not sure that will work with Iran. That being said - I lived in Iran for 18 months. We were one of the last American families to get our belongings out before the hostages were taken. We have family friends that holed up in our house hiding from the guerilla fighters as they headed over the rooftops to the Shah's police compound. I know what kind of country iran was and could be again but - unfortunately - there are a bunch of religious fanatics and extremists in power and I really am not sure that diplomatic relations will make any difference to them.

I don't know either. But I think we have to try. That's where I think the Bush Doctrine was wrong. We have to try. We're the U.S.A. If we keep the moral high ground then we can pull together our allies just like Bush Sr. did with the first Gulf War. When we just say "screw it, talk to the end of my M-16" then we find ourselves in situations like we have now.

I was completely ready to give Bush the benefit of the doubt - well, the first time.
And I have my fingers crossed that the outcomes of his presidency won't be as bad or as lasting as they seem right now.

Right now I'm using my phone, but when I can I'll try explaining more. However, regarding soundbites, are we not to believe what people say? Which soundbite in particular are you inquiring about?
As for diplomacy, did bush not do what he could, diplomatically, to stop Iran's nuclear program? Sanctions have not worked. Now they are within a year of having nuclear weapons. How much more diplomacy do you want before any actions are taken?
I find it funny that a democratic leader (forgive for not remembering his name) blamed republicans for the failure of yesterdays stimulus plan. Did he forget that 11 democrats voted against it as well? Damn those meddling republicans. Another sad thing about the package is all the "pork" that will not create jobs (it's called a stimulus package because it's supposed to stimulate the economy). For example, how are skate parks and money for birth control supposed to help stimulate the economy?
On another note, is a country not allowed to defend itself if attacked? All over the world people were protesting Israel's attack on Palestine. However, does anyone report that hamas were shooting rockets into Israel? I don't think so. Hamas shoots crude rockets aimlessly into Israel, where it can hit anyone, women and children included. Israel, on the other hand, specifically targets Hama members. The thing is that Hamas hides in the civilian population, so unfortunately there will be civilian casualties. Nobody seems to report this though. All they report is 50 Palestinian civilians died, compared to one Israeli.

It absolutely has been reported that Hamas fired rockets in to Israel. And while it's true that those rockets can hit anyone, the casualty count in Israel is and was FAR less than civilian casualties in Palestine. I'm not defending Hamas or Israel, but I don't feel the media has been as biased in this instance as it has in the past. If anything, I was shocked at how much the media focused on perceived injustices on the part of Israel -- blocked humanitarian aid, etc.
lets not forget what lowry (i think thats his name, the person who did the benediction after the inauguration, just paraphrasing, "where black isnt sent to the back, where brown can stick around, where yellow is more mellow, where the red man can get ahead man, and where white embraces what is right"
now when is the last time anyone ever saw a black man enter a bus, and was told to sit in the back (those days are done with, stop hating for something that happened decades ago), and the one that im surprised no one has mentioned (but since like 95% of everyone here drank the obama juice, its not really that surprising)...the fact that he said "let white embrace what is right"...now im not white, but i took offense to that comment...this dude, and many who think like him, are living in the days of segregation and cannot let go...kind of like obamas ex-pastor
first off...i'm not taking sides, but merely trying to add some perspective to this part of people's argument...
rev. lowery reworded an old song by big bill broonzy(an old blues/folk singer/guitarist) called "black, brown & white": "This little song that i'm singin' about, People you know it's true If you're black and gotta work for a living, This is what they will say to you, They says, "if you was white, should be all right, If you was brown, stick around, But as you's black, hmm brother, get back, get back, get back"
he didn't make it up himself, but actually reworded it to, IMO, make light of our past and look towards a brighter future. and it is "GET BACK"...not "GET IN BACK".

one should also ask, can you really EVER know what they went through living through the height of the civil rights conflict? have you ever been sprayed with a fireman's hose? have you had police dogs sicked on you for merely walking in a certain part of town? have you seen your friends and family members hurt, maimed, or killed because they drank from the wrong water fountain, or happen to be the wrong color of skin?
i think discounting his experience, especially at his age, is a tad on the ridiculous side. those kinds of things shape you. you can't expect him to feel absolutely nothing watching the first black president being inaugurated after going through the hell he, and others, endured because of racism.
those who forget history are doomed to repeat it...
I can see your argument, and I can understand that people did suffer. However, how does a nation move forward when a lot always comes back to racism. I'm not saying forget the past. We need to always remember our history. We have come a long way, which is great, but to always use it as an excuse is not progress, IMHO.
Collin Powell, condaleeza rice, Obama, and michael Steele are proof that we have come a long way.
Alyroo, go to google and look up katrina victims AND -tattoos -abuse -wasted money -fema debit cards
Your choice! There you will find all the frivolous items purchased with tax payer money. Those debit cards were in the amount of $2000. One gentleman even collected 18 cards!!! Some of this info came from msnbc, so you know there is no right-wing spin to it. Now tell me bush didn't help.

i think his speech was a testament to the fact that we ARE progressing. he was speaking at the inauguration of a black president...i think recognizing and remembering where we were as a nation just a generation ago was more than appropriate.
now that he's officially our president, it's up to his actions to prove we've made the right decision.
^^^true, but the way i took it (and many others) was that he was saying that we have not progressed..."and let white embrace what is right"...that seems like he is talking about the future, not the past
and whats the deal with obama selecting shady people for his positions...tom daschel owes a shit load in back taxes...that is not a LITTLE hiccup, compared to the gaithner

i think the only people who have a real problem with it are those who don't understand its origins, nor do they associate in any personal way with what they've been through during the civil rights movement. he did NOT come up with those words himself. it was a recitation of an old song...that's it.
i think for as many supporters obama has, there are just as many waiting for him to fall off his pedestal. i guess i just feel like there are bigger problems at hand than what an old civil rights leader repeated during the inauguration.

First, I apologize for coming at you with both barrels last week. Second, do you really want to start comparing Bush appointees v. Obama appointees?
