i will have to adjust some things diet-wise and also exercise wise... i have been planning on getting up early to hit the gym for an hour of cardio. might be a good time to start that.
I personally have all but given up on losing weight. Apparently God likes me fat. ;D
I just try and stay in decent shape. This time of year I get plenty of exercise with about 3-4 hours of yard work EVERY day.
I would much rather be strong than thin. Ideally I'd be both, but even though I'm not happy with my weight, I am happy that I can actually lift things and be useful.
thanks, man! It was how I was brought up. My dad had his first heart bypass when I was in 1st grade and so my mom, sister and I were the ones to move furniture and shovel snow because he wasn't allowed to. (though actually, we would have done it anyway since there was only one of him and we were the kids!) When my sister was on bedrest the last month of her pregnancy, the thing she hated the most was how weak she became.
Not only does alcohol contain a lot of calories, but when consumed your body takes priority in breaking down alcohol and puts other processes (such as burning fat into energy) on hold. So maybe try holding out on the booze a bit to shed some of those pesky pounds.
So i started this thread over a year ago, and never reached my goal, and actually gained almost 20 more pounds during the summer and fall! So in December i got real serious and have lost 55 pounds since Dec 02 09, and am 7 pounds below the goal weight i outlined in my original post. The last time i was at this weight at Roo was 05 or 06.

Nice. I was 270 in February and am about 240ish now. Hoping to get down to 235 or below by June. What all have you done? I restricted my calories to 1500-2000 a day and only drink on the weekends (which was the hardest part). I also work out 1-2 times a day except Sundays.
pretty much the same thing. as far as working out i go back and forth between cardio and weight training. ive done the same in regards to drinking. sometimes i feel i should get more calories on my heavy cardio days. but I was at 268 and i was 213 as of last thursday so its working. i can now run 4 miles non stop in 35 minutes!
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
I was gonna start a thread but i guess this will do. I wouldn't consider myself overweight but i broke my elbow over halloween and just got the ok to really start working out again. Gotta lose that broken elbow fat i gained.
I did P90x a year and a half ago and it was awesome. I hate to sound like those informercials but if anyone is serious about losing weight, this is an amazing way to do it. The first time i went through it i was at 210 and ended up getting down to 175 after 90 days. I wanted to start a p90x before roo forum, so that people can go on and motivate each other because it really is fun doing it with other people and helping each other out.
If anyone is doing this, or is trying to lose weight any other way. This is a great way for everyone to stay motivated.
Get some pretty jacked up inforooers by the time June rolls around
I'm in. I want to add that Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred is great! I'm very limited in what I can do thanks to a back injury but I'm going to be counting calories.
If you hate excercise, all that matters in the end is calories in vs. calories out! www.myfitnesspal.com has a calculator that can tell you how much you should eat for steady weight loss.
A deficit of 500 calories a week creates one pound of weight loss.
So say you need to eat 2100 calories a day to maintain your weight, according to the calculator. Eat 1600 and you lose a pound a week. It's really that simple. Exercise keeps you strong and happy but if you're injured or just plain lazy, you can do it just by counting calories.
I'm back on the wagon thanks to Sda and the other inspirational people here Write down what you eat. It makes a difference!
-Drinking 8 glasses of water a day will keep you full in-between meals -Easy on the snacking. It's better to eat in meals. -Start at a reasonable calorie deficit and work your way up every week. -Losing around 1-2 lbs a week is a steady rate -Running 4 miles a day isn't going to make you lose weight. Diet is what will make you lose weight. -Lifting weights for 45 mins and running/jogging for about 20 mins will do just fine. -Look into H.I.I.T (High Intense Interval Training) -Don't get discouraged if you aren't seeing results right away. Some changes aren't visable for a month or two. -Patience is a virtue. Stick with it and you will see results. -If you have smartphone there are calorie counter apps that are really helpful. -Weighing yourself every week at the same time (preferably in the morning) is a great way to track results. -Diet and working out is 50/50. You can't slack on either
This is my background:
All I do all day is go to class, read on how to get healthy and inforoo, and go to the gym. So ask any questions you have, I'm no personal trainer or nutritionist but I do know a good amount.
I'll try to post more motivation things along the way and my progress as well.
Good luck everyone. 14 weeks is nothing. We can do it.

This is a great thread! Truly committing to lose weight is definitely a feat in of itself.
Chicken, I can totally relate to the whole putting on weight-post surgery/injury deal. When I was 18, just two days after graduation, I had emergency surgery and was bed-ridden for 4 weeks. Walking was difficult for even 6 weeks after the incident.
So, as awesome as it was spoiling myself with food and watching all of the movies I wanted for 6 weeks, its easy to assume I put on a lot of weight. So, my freshman year of college, I told myself I’d shed it and then some. I ended up shedding 40 pounds through healthy eating choices and persistent exercise. Though I’ve fluctuated an occasional 5lbs or so, I’ve kept it off!
I’m not big on workout vids at home. I’m not 100% sure why, but perhaps its because you’re likely to do the workouts in the same room that is otherwise served for lounging, so it doesn’t put me in the proper mindset. I’m so glad it worked for you, however. I hear P90X is an ass-kicker. I prefer the gym or going for a jog outside. I HATE running, but its so great for slimming down.
One element that has really helped me stay on track is the iPhone app (and website) called MyFitnessPal. It’s literally my best friend and its free. It’ll calculate your goals and tell you how many calories you’re allotted each day. Its like a free version of Weight Watchers, I suppose. It really helps me keep track and calculate what all I’m stuffing into my face. And since I love beer and boozing, I’m able to cut loose a little on the weekends.
I’m about 10 lbs from my dream weight and I’d love to be there, come June

I need to lose my gut. Not overweight but I gained a little gut and need to get back in some kind of shape. Will definitely be trying some of these tips.

I started this Feb 1 in hopes of gaining some muscle before Bonnaroo. I haven't been doing it consistently (mainly because of my work schedule) but I do see some great results.
Typically on how I feel or how much time I have depends on my work out. Running is easier for me than lifting weights, so I can bang out 3.5 miles in thirty minutes or so if I don't have a lot of time or I am tired. If not, I do the hour work out on whatever I feel like with P90x. I guess I'm bad for not following the work out by it's day by day plan.
Thank you for bumping this!! I have an elliptical and have not used it for a month because of this damn flu/sinus/cold poop that won't go away. As soon as I feel good, I am aiming at 3-4 times a week for 30 minutes. I need to lose 10lbs, but would be happy with anything over 5lbs!
Oh and I've been trying to watch my calories and fat also, and have not been drinking wine.... That is the hardest part....
Awe SDA, why can't we see your face? Boo! But it looks like you are working hard and looking good!!
I'm technically on Weight Watchers through my work, but I just use it for accountability. I haven't tracked points since the second week or so and I just weigh in at the meetings and leave (they are on campus on my "lunch break" which I have been working through). I started the last week of October and am down 27.2 pounds! I am not even sure exactly what my goal is, but I am thinking that I have another 20ish to go.
I basically just watch what I eat- Severely cut back on the simple carbs and upped my veggies. I've been bringing snacks in my apron pocket at my serving job to help me resist snacking on the fries, bread, etc. As soon far as exercise is concerned, I don't yet do it. I know "I'm too busy" is not a valid excuse, but starting an exercise regimen when I am working 100 hour weeks is just not a recipe for success. I should hopefully be done with overtime next week and be down to my average 65 hour weeks, so I can change that soon!!

I've gained a decent amount of weight since I started college. This year I started working out, running every m-w-f, working out every tues-thurs-sat and then resting on Sunday. It's been working pretty well so far. I've also started eating a lot less shitty food, and completely cut out red meat. I'm anticipating I'll have a lot more pre-corn energy than usual this year. I've definitely noticed a decrease in my roo stamina between 2009-2011 and I'm trying to make this year the comeback.
I am now the weight I was at 9 months pregnant with my son I'm tall, so people don't notice much, but I know that my pants are tight and I have a beer belly (lol). I'm 5'10" and right now like 170ish#. 150 would be GRAVY. I have a desk job and snack a lot (since hitting 170 I have switching to light beer! hehe).

Me to Jade, this is the heaviest I have ever been. I am about 136lb and I am 5ft 4. 125 would be my perfect weight but it is a hard weight to stay at for me. The desk job is a killer You certainly carry the weight well and don't look like you weigh 170!!
I've been going through a big transition recently. I was smoking, not working out, and switching between eating right and eating junk for a long time and I decided that I really needed to change that.
I quit smoking at the beginning of November, and I've gone from being vegetarian who ate a lot of fries and beer to vegan and am cooking most of my meals. I've also started doing Couch to 5k. I'm not as focused on weight loss, but I kind of realized that everything about my lifestyle was really destructive and I'm focused on being healthy now.
I'm definitely excited about making healthy changes, but it's really hard.

Last year at roo time, I was 5'11", 275. Right now I weigh in at 220. I got this way by going vegan for a few months, but lately I've been a weekday vegan and weekend flexitarian. It was interrupted by a serious back injury that had me immobile for about 6 weeks. I also hit the treadmill every day for a minimum of 2-4 miles, and keep a pretty tight regimen of core exercises and strength/flexibility. I'm about to up my distance on the treadmill to 4-6 miles daily, because the 2-4 is getting too easy.
And it pains me to hear you're giving up wine! I am typically a big beer drinker, but because of my calorie counting, started easing into the wine drinking.
I've found that 1/2 of a bottle of red wine only clocks in at 240-ish calories, while some of the beers I'd drink would be that much just for a pint. Plus sipping on a big fancy glass of wine, is such a brilliant beyond brilliant way to wind down for the day!
EVEN better is the whole Two Buck Chuck ordeal from Trader Joes. I can get my buzz on for under $3!
The whole wine thing.. I kinda cheat. If I know that I plan on throwing back a bottle of wine at night, I just eat SUPER healthy all day (ie all veggies and lean protein) and majorly save up the calories.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
For people with desk jobs, there are things you can do that will work your body out while you sit down all day. Resistance workouts, sitting on workout balls, improving posture (doesn't actually lose you weight, just helps you wear the weight you currently have better), instead of writing emails you visit a person's office, stuff like that. I'm fortunate enough to have at least 2.3 miles of walking every day to get to my job site, so that's a built-in activity that I have. But not nearly enough.
When I get into workout beastmode, it's basically water, fruit, veggies, grilled chicken, booze (being realistic here), granola. Turkey sandwiches with just mustard and no cheese for lunch, no soda ever, no food after 730/8 (I'm a night owl, so this gives me four hours of not eating before bed). When you think you're hungry, most of the times your body is actually trying to get you to drink fluids. Like SDA said, keeping your stomach full with water prevents it from alerting your body to feed it. If you do want to snack? Grapes. They're 80% water, but filling.
A lot of this is basic, but it's all about sticking to it. The more you work out or do active stuff the more energy you'll have. The more energy you have, the more you're likely to push yourself. I'm somehow able to do these types of lifestyle shifts without someone pushing me or watching me, but I used to need someone to keep me going. So if you haven't done so, tell someone. Actually saying what your plan is makes you focus more and make sure the person you tell is someone who will ask you often how things are going.
Oh, and don't be afraid to get a gym membership because some anvil with a nipple for a head is throwing dumbbells around the gym like they're stuffed animals. That guy is way, way, wayyyyyyy more insecure about himself than you'll ever be. Trust me.
