Thanks for the kind words. I'm actually going to lift right now after doing some HW.
I'm playing basketball with friends before to get cardio in then i'll lift and I'm doing Legs and Shoulders.
I also forgot to add in my post that BREAKFAST IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL. It will regulate your appetite throughout the day and you won't snack or eat more later on throughout the day.
Also, working out your legs helps your metabolism.
Sleeping 8 hours a night helps your body recover and rest and results will come faster.
Having a protein shake after lifting will help recover your body quicker, heal muscles faster, and reduce soreness. Taking protein does not mean you will get swole, it will help tone you up. So take a scoop with water after you workout. Whey protein is whey protein, labels do not matter.
For those who have a desk job, try eating 6 small meals throughout the day. Pre-make the meal at home and bring them to work.
The links I posted in my first post explain more in detail.
Oh, and don't be afraid to get a gym membership because some anvil with a nipple for a head is throwing dumbbells around the gym like they're stuffed animals. That guy is way, way, wayyyyyyy more insecure about himself than you'll ever be. Trust me.
Don't be intimidated. Most people (at least I am) are happy to see people making a change and want to get healthy.
Losing weight is like quitting smoking, it's a lifestyle change. You can't just workout one week and not the other. It's rather go hard or go home.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

I need some serious motivation!
Some of you know my battles with weight. And know that last year I lost a significant amount by doing a medical weight loss program.
Sharing these pics is not to brag (these pics are pretty embarrassing!), but more to motivate me (and maybe some of you?).
This was me in Fall 2010:
Mike D's Birthday Pool Party 2010:
Mike D's Pool Party 2011 (July - started losing weight in April):
And this is me now:
I'm not sure how much I've lost because I don't weigh myself, but I think it's about 40 lbs. Even more importantly my BMI went from 30 in April to 25 in October.
The past month or so I've been putting a few pounds back on (it feels like I have anyways). I'd like to lose 20 more lbs by Bonnaroo time, but it's going to be tougher because I'm not going to be doing the medical weight loss anymore.
I vow - starting today - to get out be active at least 3 days a week and start watching what I eat again.
I'm going to bookmark this thread. I'd love to hear more about what you all are doing to get fit and I'd love to hear/see your progress. I need some accountability since I'm not going to the doctor all the time and getting on that scale. Maybe I should buy a scale?
Also, I like how Bonzai makes taking down a bottle of win seem like drinking a single Bug Lite or something. Nicely done.
It is.
I think Vector is the only person on this board who has seen how I put back wine.
True story. It's pretty impressive, considering how yer kind of a lil' munchkin. And I did notice between Moogytime and hangin' out in NYC that you've definitely slimmed down!
Sarah- can't see your photos at work, but I'ma check them out later. I bought the Jillian 30 day DVD (it was like 6$) and a jump rope. I plan on being active at least a couple days. Hoping our hikes help out some. I used to exercise after work at home some but stopped several months ago and it's noticable. I need to spring clean the fuck out of my house, too, that'll be some calorie burning fo' sho'.

Exactly what sda says. I'm far from a model specimen, but over the last 3.5 months I upped my gym days to about 5 a week. It can be a little overwhelming at first, but get someone to show you around and keep pushing your comfort zone a little.
I know I love seeing the same people every day. I dont talk to them. I dont interact with most of them at all, but I like knowing that the people are there.
A few things that have helped me.
First, I changed to going to the gym before work. It sucks, but I never have plans that early so I can be consistent. It also forced me to change my eating schedule where I now stop eating for the day between 730 and 8 most days.
Second, I got a trainer. He pushes me to work harder than I would otherwise, but more than anything I'm learning about exercise. I have a much larger staple of exercises that I know how to combine and use in my workouts.
Third, I spend more time talking with people that are also in the habit and consistent. Their consistency helps me remember that I can do it too.
Results, no weight loss, but that's because I'm adding muscle. I've cut 2 minutes per mile on my 5k pace and bumped my long runs from 5 miles to 8 to 10 miles. And I need to start looking for new jeans and shirts as my belly fades.

Ha. Not so little or I wouldn't be posting in this thread!
And I am glad you noticed!! The nice thing about WW is that I know exactly what I weighed when (Sarah, maybe that scale is a good idea!). It looks like I lost about 12 pounds between Moog and NYC and I've lost another 8 since then (A few pounds lost the week before Moog- that was my first week).
When I am down a few more (or when I am bored), I will try to post something like Sarah's journey!

Sarah you are doing a great job and you made a good start with the hiking trips!! A scale really helps me get motivated but I have learned that I can easily obsess over it, so don't weigh more than once a week. Either way, you always look great!!
Sarah - you look fantastical Every time i see you its like you're tinier and tinier!
Im a bootcamp girl. 6-7am is killer when I have to commute to get there (gym is a mile from my office) so Im walking out the door at 5:15 - but once Im there I love it. LOVE it. Chico is right - doing it before work is hard at first but really a great start to your day. And (not to brag at ALL) I run in the afternoons, even on bootcamp days. So Im basically putting in 1.5 - 2 hours a day. Hey - I have only myself to answer to!
I dont booze nearly as much as I used to (contrary to that karaoke video and various meetups and brunches that some of y'all have had the pleasure of my company at) which is difficult living in such a fab town, but it's worth it. And the scale HELPS! I think that the everyday weighing is harsh, bc you're seeing those 0.5 and 1 lb differences that EVERYONE has daily due to food and water retention etc - but once a week is really really informative and if you're losing, it's really motivating.
Good luck and godspeed to everyone in here who's makin it work for themselves! And regardless of how you look at roo, if you really give it your best between now and then, you will FEEL better and it won't matter exactly what you've lost on the scale! <3

I started Weight Watchers 5 weeks ago; as of last night's meeting, I am down 13.4lbs. Going to go back the gym tomorrow to rekindle my love/hate relationship with exercise. The hardest part for me is getting back into a consistent work-out schedule. Once I do it for a week or two, I feel so much more relaxed, can sleep at night, and it becomes something that I want to do and not something that feels like a chore. I did this around the same time last year and dropped 35lbs before Roo. I gained back 8lbs over the year, but now that's gone plus a few more. Hoping I can shed another 30 before I hit the farm!

Sarah, you look like a different person.
You guys can always join a sports/intramural team to be active and have fun. I play men's league hockey and wooden bat league baseball during the summer. At school I play soccer, basketball, softball, and flag football throughout the year.
It keeps me active and sane.
If you live in a warm climate and like to golf, walk the course. You can always adjust activities to get more of a workout.
Glad everybody is in on this thread. I expect it to be going strong 2 weeks from now.

Yeah I am too old for that shit..... plus I live in TN... once it's April to September, I don't go outside unless totally necessary Bonnaroo is of course totally necessary.
I had forgotten about this thread, and am surprised to see it bumped. Its great to see 3 years later it may be inspiring people to start or continue trying to get fit.
Its so weird to read that initial post because i remember how i felt then. Now i am actually at 200 which was my goal, and have maintained this weight for about a year and a half now and ive finally learned to maintain! Ive also develop muscles, which wasnt a goal, but now im kind of into working out and going to the gym.
When i first started the thread, looks like i was still was drinking every night. I never realized how the calories in a couple beers (IPAs) and a couple of shots of vodka can add up. Now i dont drink during the work week, and save, and enjoy it for my days off.
So ill just end with a tip for how i learned and still learn to maintain. First eat well and count your calories! The My Fitness Pal app is amazing, and you can enter your exercisers too. Second, keep moving! I go to the gym 5 or 6 days a week but thats cause i like it now, but just do some thing at least 3 or 4 days a week, and lastly, cut down on your indulgences (beer, chocolate). Make them rewards, or something you can truly indulge in.
My husband and I just started back up at the gym on Monday. I haven't been since last Sept/Oct and I pretty much gained 10 lbs over the holidays. My weight goes up and down about 10 lbs depending on the time of year and how active I am.
Last year though Roo kicked our butt, we didn't prepare enough physically so we vow to do that this year. It's going to be rouh though, on Monday at the gym I just walked 2 miles and yesterday 3.5 and I am so sore it's crazy! I have to build up to running again. I also started hula hooping about 30 min a day for those stomach muscles.
And once the weather breaks here we plan to go on a lot of hikes. We live next to a huge natural park system and there is great hiking. We normally go but not as often as we'd like but this spring we want to go at least 2-3 times a week in addition to going to the gym.
Great Job everyone!!! Again haven't met some of you but just the fact you interact and share with each other really does a lot for motivation. Everyone's tips i feel are exactly what i try and focus on (calorie counting, gym workouts etc.).
My only advice is to people who have a hard time commiting to something. Just realized that really the first week and a half to two weeks is the hardest. It seems pointless, its hard to keep going and you're sore. After that though, really everything becomes routine. It no longer is hassle and personally for me, it's fun.
This is just one of the many reasons bonnaroo rules, because of you people encouraging each other. It's awesome, keep it up everyone!!!

Mike, Congrats on your discoveries and maintenance. Truly amazing. And your weight loss philosophies mirror mine exactly. I mentioned earlier that MyFitnessPal is the BEST app on my phone. Any time I eat anything or exercise at all, I immediately clock it into my app.
I think you make a good point about rewards. Obviously the cardinal rule of dieting is to not completely deprive yourself of the things you enjoy, as you're more likely to splurge later. Its all about making those things you enjoy thinks to look forward to.
My two worst enemies? FRIES and BOOZE! Curly, waffle, steak, seasoned, tots, sweet potato. I'm not prejudiced to any potato. So instead of telling myself I should have them all the time, I allow it into my diet once or twice a week. It makes the indulgence THAT much better. Same with booze.
One more thing I've learned along the way is to not get caught up on numbers when it comes to your weight. Its all about how you feel about yourself and the way you look. 135lbs of muscle looks tooootally different than 135lbs of someone out of shape.
I used to obsess over the scale's report, but when I moved into the place I'm at now, I couldn't depend on the readings anymore. See, I live in this 1920's Atlanta mansion that's been converted into 4 different condo units and the house is..tilted? Whenever I'd step on the scale, it would say I was 40lbs heavier than last time. Then, if I stepped on it again, it would read 85lbs. Soo, unless I'm magically fluctuating weight by the second, it was wayyyy off. With that, I've learned not to worry about the number and focus on just being healthy and happy with my image.
P.S. Great job to you, Sarah!! You're doing an amazing job! As well as everyone else. I do love me some weight loss camaraderie!

Hope everyone is eating well today and get some exercise in. I've eaten well with an egg sandwich this morning and a turkey sandwich for lunch. I'll try and finish with a big protein meal, hopefully a chicken stir fry...yum.
Snowing up here in the NE, one class cancelled allow me to eat a healthy lunch. One more class, then looking at a house, and then the gym.
Yesterday I had an apple for breakfast, a spinach salad for lunch and grapes for an afternoon snack.. aaaaand then a Harp and some buffalo tenders for dinner. It was snowing, I wanted comfort food! haha. But def not so healthy. I paid for it though. It was too heavy for me and it made me so tired that I immediately went home and took a two hour nap.

That's definitely encouraging seeing people's results. I think my problem was always stopping before any results could be noticed.
if you're an immediate gratification person then its tough to stay with it. visible results take awhile to reach but if you can focus on how much better you feel until those results start to show it helps a little

It takes a month or two to really notice results.
Anyways, I rolled over my ankle yesterday and now have a severe ankle sprain. Out for 2 weeks so my diet has to be in check.
Almost done week 3 of p90, sort of starting to look like i did pre broken elbow, which i am happy about. Can definitely tell my legs are more muscular and aren't so ginormous.
SDA Sucks about the ankle, i did that too playing basketball and had to stop really working out because of it. Keep up the diet though, and you won't miss a thing. It's really frustrating getting an injury especially when you are getting in to a daily routine. Actually it quacking sucks bad.
Seeing results is a HUGE motivator, but like everyone is saying it takes a while. My big thing is goals, not visible results. If you can just set a goal, or something you want to be able to accomplish, and keep your eye on it, the working out part comes easy. Mine is not only to get back in to shape, but i want to be able to run the Tough Mudder in the summer.
Keep up the good work though people. Have a goal and acheive it!!!
