Good job J!! None of my clothes fit either and it's very depressing
I've been doing the elliptical, but I really need to do more than 30 minutes and I can barely manage that due to my asthma I am also counting calories/fat, and I have not been drinking alcohol (which is HUGE for me).... So far I lost 2 lbs.
As annoying as all of the new 'body builder' friends who compete in 'shows' fad is (it is literally my entire news feed on FB)...I have learned one good thing from it; heavy lifting. It really does WONDERS for weight loss! I was that cardio person at the gym with the treadmill and the elliptical and the spin classes and was not really seeing any change at all until I saw people that I knew posting pictures on facebook of their new 'cut' bodies that I understood the secret. I am in NO way trying to be one of these people (more power to them, its just not my thing) but I will say when I started lifting weights regularly (not anything remotely close to their definition of heavy) I started to see a HUGE difference! It really burns the fat (not just with arms or legs)!
Just my 2 cents! I fall off the wagon all the time!
Lifting weights is not an option for me due to a bum elbow/arm. I guess I could do leg weights, but I don't have a gym anywhere near me, so I will not go to one.
You could do squats and core excercises! No gym needed!
Tell me about weight lifting!
Gladly! Well I will you what I do and maybe other more professional lifters can chime in. But I have seen great and fast results.
Warm-up 10 mins on elliptical or jogging on treadmill
Weights 3 reps of 12 on bench press (I started with just the bar and then as it gets easier I add weight) 2 reps of 20 of alternating bicep curls 3 reps of 12-14 of tricep pull downs (the little rope thingie on the machine with the cables) 3 reps of 12-14 of assisted pull ups (I LOVE these! My favorite thing to do there) 3 reps of 12-14 of latreal deltoid raises
...and then 10-20 mins of more cardio. Sometimes bike or a combo of running and bike. I get bored easily and so does my body so it's good to switch around.
I do this 2-3 times a week. The other days I do just cardio and do a combination of the cardio machines for the aforementioned boredom.

I've been using the chest press machine and I like it but it's hard!! I actually think I pulled a muscle (with the measly 10 lb weight) but it feels somewhat better today. My boyfriend is worried I'm pushing myself too hard... so how do I do all of this without hurting myself? Maybe not do as many reps to start?
I still haven't made it to the gym, but I've started eating better again and greatly reduced the amount I was drinking. Just that little difference has me feeling much better. Now if I could just have some energy when I get home from school one of these days to get the habit of working out started again.
I need to get back on it and not mess up the progress I've made since this summer. Since July I have gone from 196 down to about 172; pant size 36 to 32 (first time 32 has fit me since 8th grade).

Also, what do you mean by assisted pull ups?
Are you doing the bench press or the chest press machine? Just want to verify because IMO the bench press is superior. And yes, it's one of the muscle groups I felt the most when I started. Right above your boobs, right? It will feel sore and tight. If it hurts right after you do it you may have pushed yourself too hard. Generally when I up the weight I will feel soreness exactly 24 hours after. That's generally a "good" sore. To prevent injury have a PF employee show you the basics or watch some youtube videos for form. As for reps, aim for 2-3 reps. Do as many of you can in each set and if it's really hard just do 2 reps, as many as you can. When I had a personal trainer he always pushed me to do 2 more than what I thought I could handle. I'd be like, "I can't!" and he wouldn't take that for an answer.
Assisted pull ups just use counter weight so you aren't pulling up your entire weight (or i'd be able to do none pull ups) It has a little pad you kneel on and you grab onto the bars. It might take a little trial and error to get the weight right.

Finally got back to the gym. I wasn't sure how I would do since it has been over 3 weeks, but I did about 45 min on the cross country machine and another 15 min on the bike, with some arm weights in between. Not too bad.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

Well I've been going to the gym for two weeks now. I'm anxiously awaiting the day when it gets easier because, right now, my whole body hurts. I guess it's good because it means I'm actually working out, but damn.

Keep it up! It'll come. And eventually it gets more fun too.

You will reach a point when you will want to feel a little sore!
The good part is that I don't dread going to the gym; I enjoy the time to myself. I just hate afterwards, when I feel like I've been rolled over by a Mac truck. Once the inches start coming off, I'll be even MORE motivated!

Yes you will!
And you won't always feel like you got run over by a mac truck. Promise.
Those are all great resources for those trying to get in better shape or whatever.
I use www.myfitnesspal.com to track my calories/nutrition, there is also an app that's pretty great.
Oh, and as much as it doesn't seem like it at the beginning, going to the gym DOES get better. After the first couple weeks you'll notice that you don't get sore any more. And instead of feeling run down afterwards you feel much more energized and better overall. This goes for any weightlifting or cardio.

It's proven that having 'cheat days' is beneficial! You're much less likely to completely backslide if you allow yourself a day every now and then to go a bit overboard.

sooooooooo the overlap of getting my tickets yesterday and realizing i've probably put on 5 more over the holiday weekend had me ready to CHANGE MY LIFE this morning.
i packed my gym clothes and shoes carefully, then left the bag on my bed.
i walked over to the gym at work this afternoon because i've never been there. even though i left my clothes at home, at least i can get my bearings and know what's up when i come back tomorrow, right? the gym will close this weekend and remain closed until the students return after new year's.
