I'm glad there is someone out there that goes to a Planet Fitness! It's hard to research on the internet because people only write about their bad experiences so everything I've read has been bad. But I think it's worth a try for $10/month.
I joined PF about a month ago and it's great. I honestly feel like there is no judgement like the commericals and signs say. $10/month...how could you go wrong?!
PS losing weight before Roo '14 would be amaze-balls. Is there really a 'group' or whatever doing that? <Newbie question>
I dont think there's really an organized group but there are lots of us that talk about nutrition and fitness in this thread. At one point a bunch of people were using myfitnesspal.
EDIT: In part there's no real group bc its pretty early off season. It'll pickup in the new year.

Oh myfitnesspal! I use it religiously for a week then fall off the wagon, then get back on, then jump off again. The love saga that is me and myfitnesspal

I think most everyone does. I use it when I want to log my week and see how I'm doing on the whole. I'm never going to keep it consistent for weeks or months, but a check in every couple of months works for me.
Over the past month or so my diet has been flip flopping. Good for a few days, then crash for a few days. Rinse and repeat...
And my gym is about 55 bucks after a discount and I haven't been in like 8+ months. Over 400 bucks wasted. Dayummmmm. I really need to get going or cancel...
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

That's my problem with gyms. I tend to stop going after a while. I figure that if that happens when I join Planet Fitness, I won't feel as terrible about wasting $10/month.
BUT IT WON'T HAPPEN! (trying to stay positive here)

I want gym snaps 4-5 times a week. And Nugs snaps likes 30

My biggest hurdle to losing weight is myself. I'm crazy lazy and lack motivation to get myself fit. Then I walk up a set of stairs and am winded and get angry at myself. Suck.
First day at the gym yesterday! I did better than I thought I would. A mile on the elliptical and then a small ab workout and chest press. Going again today but I'm going to change it up a bit.

I understand; I have been lazy for the past few years. But it's gotten to the point where my clothes don't fit anymore I can't afford to buy a new wardrobe, and it makes me angry that I've gained enough weight to require new clothes in the first place! My short-term goal is to be able to fit comfortably in my clothes again.
My boyfriend's best friend's sister is getting married on Dec. 7, and the dress I'm going to wear is a bit tight. So I'm hoping I can lose the 10 lbs it will take for the dress to fit well without wearing Spanx

Yay, you joined! I pretty much do the same workout all the time. I try to change it up but I have my favorites I love doing the bench press but I feel a bit lame when i put the tiny weights on and dudes are putting on the huge ones.

Based on that price, I can only assume you jumped on the New York Sports Club bandwagon? If so, get out, and now. That place is insanely overpriced.
If I were you, I'd join Big Sky - three locations in Central CT (Newington, New Britain and Simsbury), and it's $20 a month. Really great facilities, and they offer a ton of classes and stuff. If you're a new member I'm pretty sure they'll give you a handful of personal training sessions free, and the trainers there are great.
Also (and this is for everyone) keep an eye out for deals on Groupon for boot camps, Crossfit, etc. It's a great way to get those services cheap - go to one for a month at the cheap price, then either a) get another groupon for a different place, or b) take what you learned there and apply it at a regular gym.
Yeah I am at NYSC which is extremely overpriced and has the worst hours of any gym in the area... buuuut it's really the only one that I can do. Since I work 2 jobs, location is by far the most important factor in my gym decision (otherwise I'd totally be at Big Sky in Newington). It's only 4 blocks from me so I can (hypothetically) go in the morning and not have to factor in commuting time and I can go weekend mornings, shower there, and walk over to work at my Cheesecake shift. So until I work only one job... NYSC it is ??? I get a $10/month discount for being a Blue Back employee.

I have been gluten-free for about 15 months now. Actually by association...My wife is the culprit. She is feeling MUCH better (happy wife, happy life as they say).
I had my yearly physical last week and I have dropped 52 pounds in the past year
Contributing to this was having 18 teeth pulled in January...I ate a lot of soup for months (my favorite was Cream of Vicodin )
I'm wearing the same size pants now I wore in high school/college (32 waist) and I turned 53 yesterday... Bonus Fun fact/TMI: I can see my penis again
I wonder if you have ever unknowingly served Juggs at cheesecake
I don't think he goes (Larry Farnsworth?), but I actually know what he looks like. If I would recognize him casually, I am unsure. The first time I posted a picture on here, he did say that he recognized me.

Amazing! Whereas I would never go gluten-free unless I HAD to, I tend to go 80+% paleo when I am being good and the points just drop off. I went something like 30 weeks last year where I was down every single week without much exercise, portion control, etc.

I don't really live in that area anymore, so it's doubtful you'd see me. Even more doubtful that I'd go to Cheesecake - no offense, it's just not really my kind of place. I feel like everything is friend and overproportioned.
No offense taken. Before I worked there I had only been to a Cheesecake twice and wasn't in love with the food I haven't really loved the food at most restaurants that I have worked. Maybe I should go back in time and pop out in a Thai family!
But you're wrong about the fried part. Yes, there is a lot of fried, but there is also a lot of sauteed, steamed, grilled, etc. With an almost 350 item menu, you've got it all. Except lasagna. And ravioli.

I've been a member of the gym for a week now and I've been five times! Proud of myself thus far.
I spend about 45 minutes to an hour each time I go: 20-30mins cardio on the elliptical and/or bikes and the rest of the time working on my abs and arms with the weights and machines. I'm pretty out of shape so I'm not pushing myself too hard so I don't get burnt out/so sore I can't move.

That's awesome, good for you!
That's the perfect amount of cardio time, IMO! I used to try to do 45-60 mins of cardio but it was in this thread that someone told me to just focus on lifting and building muscle and I have seen the most results from that method. I usually do 10 mins of cardio to warm up and then do some weights (my routine doesn't vary much) and then finish up with another 10-20 mins of cardio depending on how much time I have before I have to get back to work.
I'm trying to lose some weight so I'm concentrating more on the cardio for now. Not sure I've lost anything yet but hopefully I will see some results in the next few weeks.

Oh I was too! It came off so fast when I switched my focus to lifting. The more muscle the faster the fat burns.

Good job J!! None of my clothes fit either and it's very depressing
I've been doing the elliptical, but I really need to do more than 30 minutes and I can barely manage that due to my asthma I am also counting calories/fat, and I have not been drinking alcohol (which is HUGE for me).... So far I lost 2 lbs.
I still cant get with it. I had two great days... and then I had two big macaroons and one GIANT brownie the size of my head for lunch yesterday. Of course, it then frustrated me so then I ordered a kids quesadilla for dinner last night. Sigh. New day!

After a couple of crazy busy months, I'm back on the wagon. Well, back on the elliptical that is. Now that I've had a few months of my back doing fairly well, I might try running again. I'd prefer that over the elliptical any day. Must do better about eating healthy & drinking more water though. Especially with the holidays almost upon us.

PS. Brownie was totally not worth it.
As I say before we head out the door in the morning: New Day! Make good choices!

As annoying as all of the new 'body builder' friends who compete in 'shows' fad is (it is literally my entire news feed on FB)...I have learned one good thing from it; heavy lifting. It really does WONDERS for weight loss! I was that cardio person at the gym with the treadmill and the elliptical and the spin classes and was not really seeing any change at all until I saw people that I knew posting pictures on facebook of their new 'cut' bodies that I understood the secret. I am in NO way trying to be one of these people (more power to them, its just not my thing) but I will say when I started lifting weights regularly (not anything remotely close to their definition of heavy) I started to see a HUGE difference! It really burns the fat (not just with arms or legs)!
Just my 2 cents! I fall off the wagon all the time!
Well you guys share your weight-lifting-weight-loss secrets to me! I know nothing about weights except I can't lift most of them I have very poor strength in my arms, like, I can barely lift a 10 pound weight. It's sad My legs are OK but not great.
