Jawbone says my baseline is ~9400 steps a day. That's a pretty neat surprise! Never would've thought I moved that much considering I'm at a computer 12 hours/day. Gonna switch from elliptical to walking to/from work in the spring...that should pump it up even more.

We had our weekly weigh-in at work, and I lost 3 lbs! I did not work out all week, and ate out twice, but I made good decisions while out, and have been eating super healthy at home. It makes me happy that I can see a difference with just eating correctly
Mizvalentine, I am going to try your suggestion of not drinking during the week. I usually have 2 rum and diets, pretty much every night, or 2-3 glasses of wine, so it won't be easy, but I am going to try.

GOOD LUCK!! The first week sucks, no doubt. But it gets progressively easier. I found it helped to say, "I'm doing this for 30 days and then I don't have to do it anymore if I hate it". By the time 30 days rolled around, the 'habit pangs' had passed.
I find its as much about the calories in the drinks as it is about what the alcohol did to my blood sugar and my sleep (booze interrupts deep sleep, lack of sleep encourages cortisol production, cortisol causes fat retention). So its worth it on a couple fronts!

I've had no alcohol this week and while I've wanted one mid evening, I didn't give in. I just poured a large ice water and drank that. I know it affects my sleep, because I have slept solidly all week without it! I lost another pound also, which motivates me more This has been a good week for weight loss!

Last week marked three months of eating better and going to the gym. I'm not keeping tracking of my weight so I have no idea how much I've lost. BUT, I can tell a huge difference in my body. My arm flab is melting away, and I actually have some muscle! And (maybe TMI) my back fat is also slowly melting away. Now if I can just get rid of the rest of this belly/hip/lovehandles fat, I will be good! Any advice on targeting those areas?

I'm looking to tone that area as well. I just pinned a few obliques workouts and hope that will help. There is also this cool bench at the gym....I don't know what it's called but it's on an incline and you bend over it and then use your lower back and abs to lift yourself back up. That thing is the shit. Just ask a gym person to help you get the right form and technique.

Yes I see people using that bench all of the time.... these people are holding like 50lbs weights while doing it! I'm certain to embarrass myself. Plus it's right next to a trash can, so there's a lot of foot traffic I might try it out on a weekend when there are fewer people there.

No don't let that weight fool you. You can cross your arms over your chest with no weight at all but it's really not too hard to add weight. I know it seems kind of intimidating but it quickly became one of my favorites! In my gym, it's right next to the the men's locker room

Well, I totally celebrated 30 days of healthy living by being a lazy, drunken, indulgent-food-eating slob all weekend! Honestly though, I feel pretty good about that--I feel like I had some collateral to spend. I'm back on track today and actually feel extra great...was getting some achy joints and random muscle pains which cleared up while I was being lazy. Added a few lbs to all my lifts this morning with no problem.
No moves on the scale, but in the gym this morning I noticed...I'm getting all kindsa dents in my arms. Won't call them cuts, but they're definitely dents on the way to some kinda definition. This is amazing to me because our family has NO muscle definition, genetically... we get big, thick and strong but our arms and legs are generally like American Sycamores--straight, wide, and smooth. So, I'll take that as a sign I've got my protein levels high enough and I'm training right. I WANT MY MICHELLE OBAMA ARMS GOSHDARN IT!!!
has anyone ever done this? some friends and i are going to do race for the cure here in columbus in may and i'm wondering if this work out really works? it doesn't seem too hard which is why i have my doubts. i'd also continue my current regime of the elliptical, incumbent bike, and swimming.
edit: sorry this picture posted so large. idk why it showed up like that....

YES! Couch to 5k is GREAT. I am a terrible runner with bad knees and asthma, but a few years ago I wanted to be able to run a respectable amount without dying. It really works.
Ugh I don't know if I've mentioned this before but I work for a University and the big upside of that is I get to use any workout facility for free! Big downside...last night there were about 40 college boys trying to get SWOLE. I left halfway through my workout. (Side note: I usually go over lunch so its not as bad, but sometimes gets a little depressing) Making my way over there in the snowfall today! Not giving up!

Just some advice, oblique workouts won't burn fat in that area. It will only build muscle. Trimming fat is done by burning calories. The best thing you can do for "problem areas" is eat clean, and boost your metabolism. If you want to work your lower back, burn lots of calories, and boost your metabolism, do dead lifts. Isolation exercises can only get you so far.
My new year's resolution was to complete one small resolution per month and I'm happy to say that I made it through January pretty effortlessly.I made it without a single sip of alcohol and I'm making it a rule in February to only have one glass per week.
February's resolution is no red meat which wont be too difficult because I don't eat it much anyway but I'm coupling it with adding in small daily exercises every week. I'm one of those people who will work out hard for like three weeks then not again for a few months so this is going to be critical in making exercise a good habit.
Now to just figure out what month I will cut out carbs & sugar. It might have to be March but then how will I celebrate my Irish heritage on St. Patty's Day!? Then April is my birthday month and I am unable to say not to birthday cake. Maybe May so I can get that out of the way before the indulgences of Roo in June.

Good job! I did no alcohol during the week last week and it wasn't as hard as I thought. I may continue with it, unless I go out to eat...... Cutting out red meat is easy for me also, I eat it about once a month. You can do the exercise, it just takes a while to become a habit for me, and then the smallest thing can make me break it. Carbs and sugar will never leave my diet so I won't even try that one!!

Good luck with it all girly!!
Thanks! I just feel like a temporary (one month) detox from carbs and sugar will really show me where my body can be. I am an admitted carb addict and sugar fiend so I have to do a bit of a detox to find my true baseline body condition.

i also work at a university and i've been going to the gym the past few weeks over my lunch, which is a good time because after work gets ridiculous. last week i was changing just in the open locker room and i noticed a girl going to the bathroom stall to change. i chalked it up to modesty and went about my business.
yesterday three different girls changed in the bathroom stall while i changed in the locker room, and i think that might be their habit as a group! which makes me feel 1) like i'm far more than 6 or 7 years older than these kids, and 2) like i'm the female equivalent of the inappropriate old locker room guy who's blow-drying his balls in front of everyone.

Is that the plan you used?
Yup! I'll admit, I had to 'redo' some weeks because...I'm just not a runner. But if you stick with it, it'll get you there.

I'm glad you understand man's plight of naked "old locker room guys"....the fear of seeing one of these guys in the locker room is way scarier than any workout could be.

I work for a university too, and I feel you!! Cept I'm 15 years older than these kids, LOL. I feel like I'm the Ghost of Fatness Yet To Come. Mostly though, I just pray to god I don't have to deal with any naked coworkers.
I might have told this story before, so sorry if I'm repeating... We have two gyms, one old school one with olympic bars and cages, and one with freeweights and kettlebells, cardio and machines. I much prefer the former, but the last time I worked out in there, some swole yah dood felt it necessary to come over and give me a lecture on my deadlift form. His main point was that I was curving my back. Except, I have steel rods neck to waist; I'm completely fused to the hips, so there is no 'curving my back'. And I'd just gotten out of 6 months at Spaulding Rehab in Boston where they specifically trained me to lift the right way. Then I watched the same dude grunt his way thru a bunch of lifts that were clearly to heavy for him, with truly egregious form, and take up the squat cage for an hour. I was just so effing infuriated, I just switched to the other gym at 6am and throw the kettlebells around and scare everybody.

yes! my desire for moral support has almost prompted me to shoot out an email inviting anyone to join me if they like, but fear of naked coworker awkwardness has kept me from it.
this thread works much better. i don't even care if you guys are naked! which i presume you are.

Awesome! Thank you!!!! I started it yesterday and it wasn't bad. I can't wait till the weather is better and I can just do it outside instead of on the treadmill. I hate treadmills.....
bicep hurts like a beotch particularly at the crease in my arm when i straighten it. hopefully the elliptical will loosen it up a little.
hold me
Whoa, I hurt my right arm! In the bicep area, too! I put the heating pad on it last night but there's not much improvement today so I will probably lay off the weights until it's better.

Heal up, workout friends!! I pulled my serratus interior last week and it hurt like a biznatch. And I didn't even know I had a muscle there, or what it was called. I took it as a learning experience!
I'm down another pound as of this morning; that's 10 since Jan 1. I know I can't keep this pace up forever but I'm gonna enjoy it while it lasts!
