we went last year to the walmart to party and hang out on Wed. We left home Wed afternoon and got there around 12 or so I believe.
It was cool to see a huge corporation like Wal Mart overrun with all kinds of festie goers.. it was just awesome to see that. And I could tell some of the employees there were kinda amused and others were just pissed lol.
Also, some people had trouble remembering Wal Mart is a public store, and people were partying a little too hard and we saw tons of law enforcements busting people for all kinds of stuff. So needless to approach Wal Mart with caution.
We went with a huge group of friends who were mostly newbies to roo, and when they got wind that they were letting ppl in the gates to roo around 3 or 4 a.m., everyone wanted to go ahead and go much to my dismay. I knew we would end up in bfe, but no one would listen.
And we were literally on the outskirts of the camp sites in major bfe. Never again will that happen!
I'll go Wed night and find some friends to hang out with, but def won't try to get into roo until mid morning.
In 07 we were watching a Nashville News station doing a report on the "trouble at Walmart" They were showing a lot of people but kept going to about three incredibly drunk people making it look like they were the norm. The three guys were screaming at the police officer who was telling them that the farm was open and they had to leave Walmart and go to the farm. The few guys were belligerently drunk giving the news crew the story they wanted. To the police officers credit he was pretty calm and kept directing traffic and rolling his eyes
In '07 we went with the intention of hanging out at Wal-Mart, but once we got there and heard the farm was open we just went in. Yeah, we were in BFE but we had a fantastic time so it didn't really matter.
Last year we had to leave later than we wanted so we just got right in line around 9-10am on Thursday. But this year we will definitely be hanging out at Wal-Mart until the morning. We'll probably get to Wal-Mart around 11pm or midnight. So we'll see you all there.

We did the Wal Mart thing in 07 and 08. We parked out in front of the Cato and Gamestop and didn't have any trouble. That area was far enough away that you could watch the party and mingle if you wanted, but you didn't have to be right in the middle of everything. There was even a porta pooper behind the Cato, nice!
We even talked to a few locals who were there before the sun went down. The majority of the people we talked to said they really love to come out and see all of us throwing down at WalMart and that we really boost their economy.
As for when to leave the lot.... you will see a mass exodous as soon as word gets out that the gates are open.

Quick question... does WMart get low on supplies during this time? Or can I plan on going there and getting last minute supplies?? Any help is appreciated.

They always have extra ice, beer, water, batteries, balloons, fruit and that type of thing. We went looking for a portable radio and we got the last one. One of the employees said that they sell more items during Bonnaroo weekend than they do at Christmas and Thanksgiving combined. They know what they are in for and they are usually prepared.
Like Melissa said, the Wal-Mart is prepared as they can be for the massive amount of people coming through that week. You'll see tons of 'Rooers in there if you need to get some extra last minute supplies.

From what I remember, the Wal-mart in Tullahoma gets prepared too for those that cut through on the way to Manchester. I was the manager for The Shoe Dept. (the actual store next to Cato) in Tullahoma in 2007. I knew what would happen so I made sure my store was stocked on flip-flops and sandals and the Wal-mart was pretty busy all weekend. In the six months I managed that store, Bonnaroo weekend was a best-selling weekend, maybe right behind back to school sales-wise.
So in other words, both Wal-marts in the area know we are coming and they're ready for us with supplies! ;D

We got there around 3pm on Wednesday and the parking lot was nearly full of cars and the party was in full swing. Wal-mart actually had a concert stage in the parking lot and two bands played after sundown last year.
Yall have to remember that Manchetser is a town of 9900 people, roo brings in 90,000 for a weekend. Yeah, wal mart does better for roo than for christmas. and yeah, the whole partying in wal mart parking lot is something that, before roo, you would have NEVER seen around here. The locals find it quite amusing.

I am destined to spend a bunch of time (maybe even a couple days) in the WalMart parking lot. I'm driving from Cali, so the sooner I get to Tennessee, the better, because that gives me more time to recover from the 30+ hour drive xD So look for me there on Monday or Tuesday! Can't miss me, I drive a bright yellow two door chevy cobalt...you can see that thing from space! (Also, if I wasn't so strapped for roo-cash, I'd put a gigantic [think several feet wide] Steal Your Face decal on the hood. Look for that next year!)
we have a 12h drive so husband was hoping to catch a few hrs of sleep in the wally parking lot before entering roo. we were thinking of leaving at about 4pm here (SwFL) which would get us to wally at about 4am and then he can sleep while kiddo and i prowl around and people watch until maybe 7 or 8am when we will start heading over to the farm. will there be anyone left at 4am?
(not worried about getting stuck in bfe if we head to line around 8am, we are destined for FC)
also, is there mroe than one walmart in manchester? i want to be sure i put the right one in our garmin.

Why didn't you get any sleep? Noise? Excitement? Uncomfortable sleeping on pavement?

Well, i guess you can get some sleep if you sleep on the complete opposite side of the parking lot away from the people... but it was pretty noisy all night, people are literally partying in the parking lot

the key to Walmart is whether or not Roo lets people in on Wednesday night IMO....Spent about 4 hours in the Walmart lot last year, then found out they were letting people in the gates...I don't know what I would have done there all night, it was pretty boring after 4 or 5 hours.

My group and I had a great time at the Wal-Mart for 7-8 hours on Thursday before heading over to spend the night at the VIP check-in location. We set up our shade tent in the spot next to our van and drank a lot while chatting with anyone who happened to walk by.
I don't doubt that Wal-mart is a great time, but does anyone know if there are other places that Roosters camp out on Wednesday night? I'm probably going to end up at Wal-mart regardless, just curious.
