My group plans on leaving Boston around midnight on Tuesday night & I am hoping to get somewhat of a convoy going. Here's our current plan (subject to change):
Tuesday: midnight - Leave Boston Wednesday: 4am(ish) - Pass through NYC to avoid morning rush. Wednesday: 11:30am(ish) - arrive in VA - have a nice long breakfast. Wednesday: 5:30pm(ish) - 1/2 through VA - have dinner, explore & buy beer/alky + food in VA Wednesday: 11pm(ish) - back on the road to TN Thursday: 4-5am(ish) get in line for Bonnaroo & keep our fingers crossed for decent spots!
Wow. that map looks familiar. We left at 10amlast year and were at Roo by 4am, got the worst camping spot ever (The first people they let in get the worst spots). I'd wait till after the morning rush hour, then take off. You'll still be there in plenty of time.

When are you planning on leaving this year? It only took you 16 hours?
We got decent camping spots, Camp Han Solo in '07 and Camp Jabba the hut in '08. We didn't really make too many pit stops, just to eat and get gas. Then on Thursday morning we usually stop for breakfast. We don't really check out much stuff on the way or take any detours. If that's your thing, then you should definitely leave earlier. It takes about 17 hours depending on how fast you're driving.

i make it less of an endurance marathon. stay in a cheap hotel one night - break it up.
19 hours is a longass drive.
also, i prefer to be in (or around) manchester the night before. then its just local traffic and not whatever the highway has to offer.
The drive split between 2 or 3 people isn't really all that bad. Last year we got there so late b.c. we stopped at my friend's aunt's house in TN. We also hit some of the NYC traffic which sucked. I don't think I'll be staying at a hotel/motel - but I definitely want some extra time to stretch my legs & explore stuff along the way. We didn't hit the highway traffic last year - so I am not quite familiar with it. I imagine is sucks quite a bit though..

WE're taking an RV with 5 people (as of now). I have 2 tickets to Phish in Knoxville, so my plan is to get there Wednesday afternoon, let them sleep while me and one other is at Phish. Then sleep while they drive the rest of the way. Don't know if everyone will agree. But I am owed the money for 2 full price tickets, so I shouldn't get too many complaints.
We did it in about 19 (being pretty cautious about speed). But only one BK stop and gas stops till we got to TN. Ate alot of corn, and enjoyed the scenery on the way down. Not as bad of a drive as it sounds.

Last year I almost flew b/c 19 hours in the car sounded like torture. I am SO glad I didn't because the trip was a lot of fun on it's own. You guys sound like you have a pretty decent plan. We don't have the luxury of the SUV, so we'll definitely be making a lot more pit stops. Eating corn is the best! Just not too much in VA.
^^I need to be your friend, you buy your friends tickets and all.
Haha you can be my friend. My choices basically came down to going VIP by myself, or spotting a couple people and getting a group to go. The group will be much more fun. And I might actually get the money back, but I am the worst person in the world at asking for money.
Lovely, actually people from up north usually are assholes. You seem sweet. I used to be a waitress down here, and old people from up north would come eat, they were so rude!!

It's probably b/c I wasn't born here... I try to treat ppls how I like to be treated therefore all the sweetness comes out :0) Also, I've always worked in service oriented positions which I guess adds to my character. You're right though, the majority of Bostonians are asses. However, if you go to NH or ME - you'll find some of the nicest people around!
