I am the ultimate masshole when it comes to driving Although, we're cool as long as you don't cut me off. Actually, we're still cool if you cut me off and you're not driving an SUV. However, if you're in an SUV and you cut me off, then you'll have a miserable miserable drive while I am around. SUV's suck!
since this is a MA thread - anyone need tickets to the dead on sunday april 19th. i have a pair i need to sell (maybe even 3 tickets).
best news - you get to sit next to me!
I'll try to find some people for those tix. I'm going by myself as of now. The most likely candidates are the ones who owe me for Bonnaroo tix, though and I'm not buying more. I would like to go w. somebody though (preferably) somebody with a ride. Where are your seats/price level?
its brand new - sister of the dive bar. it's actually before the irish times (like, walking towards rt 9). more of a Belgian twist on their beer selection on their taps. massive bottle list. no mass produced commercial beer...

Here's what we have done for the past few years.... we leave on Wed late afternoon around 4:30 pm and drive through the night. We live on the border or MA/CT, so the straight through drive is about 18 hours. We also skip NYC and go through Scranton all the way down Rt 81. We drive a van with the back seats out and a mattress in the back so we can take turns napping/driving. After Chattanooga, we spend a couple of hours stocking up on ice, food, booze, etc and then drive past the many, many miles of backed-up GA traffic to check into VIP without a wait. Believe me, VIP is worth the money.... think about it. We love the long drive cause the closer you get, the more Rooer's you see on the road. Best advice, though, is to lay low. You want to get there with no problems from Smokey. Also, remember in TN, if there is someone pulled over in the breakdown lane, you need to move to the left lane -- it's the law....

I'm section 6 on the floor Sunday and behind/side of the stage saturday, but will probably show the people my sunday ticket on saturday and sit on the floor both nights.
Last year I joined a MySpace group that was created to help Mass. Roogoers connect, form carpools, swap fondue recipes. etc. I checked and its still there:
Though dormant since last summer, I noticed the moderator posted a couple of weeks ago and is looking to revive it. May be a handy place for folks reading this thread to reconnoiter.
Just a word of advice, I think I saw it already on here. If you're going down from MA, or anywhere in New England, skip 95 and take 84 west through PA to Scranton and hop on 81, then its just a straight shot through VA and MD and WV and TN. Last year we stopped in the Shenandoah for a night, then in Chattanooga on Wed. night to supply up and rest up, then continued on to the farm real early in the morning. Got stuck in BFE, but it was ok cause our friends who we didn't go down with magically appeared like 200 yards away. Anyway, and NE'ers volunteering pre-fest?
i make it less of an endurance marathon. stay in a cheap hotel one night - break it up.
19 hours is a longass drive.
also, i prefer to be in (or around) manchester the night before. then its just local traffic and not whatever the highway has to offer.
A couple questions on this one... 1) Do you stay in a hotel 2 nights then? You said you like to break up the drive, but also like to be in Manchester the night before... Is that 1 or 2 nights at a hotel? 2) Where do you typically make your night stop? 3) How do you takle the ride home? 4) What's the route you take into Roo avoiding the highways?
Last year was my first Roo, and I drove pretty much nonstop from NH to Chattanooga (The GF took 2 hours behind the wheel on the like 600 miles strech on 81S). I left Tuesday night, and got the to hotel Wed afternoon/evening, had a good dinner, spent the night, took off in the morning around 7ish. This year will be different because I am going GA, so I am trying to figure out the best game plan to in line around 7-9 am on Thursday... As far as the ride home goes, last year I just drove as far as I could before I felt like I might die, then I grabbed a hotel where ever I was at.
I was lying in a burned out basement With the full moon in my eyes. I was hoping for replacement When the sun burst thru the sky. There was a band playing in my head And I felt like getting high.
1) hotel (or friend) for two nights. so leave on tuesday, hotel or friend that night, then on wed night another hotel right before roo. and im talking a sub 100 room here, not the ritz. if you have it, a AAA discount usually helps knock off a few bucks at the truckstop hotels.
2) depends. last year was MD, although it was a mini vacation visiting DC. stayed with an aunt and uncle and then a friend (that was also going to roo). i'd prefer the majority of the drive in one day - so say, 12 hours worth? VA or WV should be about right.
3) the two day stretch again. although i am tempted in trying to do it all monday and enjoy tuesday off before going back to work. problem is i usually do not leave before 10 am on monday, so that makes it tough. might try to make it up to nj and crash at a relative's.
4) i just follow my gps and dont really get too worried about highways. you are one car in an ocean of cars. so unless there is a reason to pull you over, (too many stickers, smoke, headlight, whatever), it's very unlikely you will have a problem. however, at 2 am, you are the only game in town... so thats half the reason i try to avoid too much late night road time.
