It is our number one cash crop we are more exporters than importers down here.

By down here you mean Nashville or the state of TN? never would have guessed...
i'm starting to get really sick of hearing about swine flu. if you feel sick, go to the doctor and get flu meds. it's not that complicated. the reason people have died is because of lack of medical care, not because this is some crazy giant pandemic we need to all be so worried about. this is a ratings ploy by news networks and it's annoying me to no end that it's working.
The whole state, the main production areas are in West, and East TN. Though there is some to the north of Nashville.
Yea, and and as far as importing - I just learned that Forbes recently ranked Memphis as number 2 on the nation's most dangerous cities. Apparently all of the cities on the list are major druq trafficking routes for Mexican cartels. Nashville is number 9.
I'm not worried about the swine flu or anything, just throwing that out there since we sort of got on that topic.
A free case of my Swine Flu patented prevention medication. It comes in a tube with what may appear to be sand in the bottom, but just add water and drink. If you die let me know and I will give a full refund.

Commercial news organization do have an agenda, primary among these is to draw and satisfy sponsors by attracting viewers. Secondary to commercial requirements is to actually perform a public service. In this case, we've been made aware of a public health and government concern about a novel flu bug that is spreading as we speak, and has killed some people.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has developed a rating scale for pandemic flu. On a scale of 1 - 6, we are at 4, with consideration being made to slide it back to 3 if conditions warrant. At a critical level somewhere between a rating of 5 and 6 local and state governments may decide to cancel "large public gatherings."
The WHO, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and other government organizations have defined the public health response to a *potential* pandemic flu situation. One response recommends use of the media to get news of the situation to the public. Acknowledgment is made that the public may become satiated to the news. This satiation can happen very fast. A couple days of reporting and already people are tired of hearing it, and accuse the media of having a commercial motive.
The situation as it exists is in the investigation phases. Mexico City has been judged to be in a phase where government action has imposed a policy of "social distancing," to control spread of disease; businesses and events where people gather have been closed or curtailed.
State governments have been asked to retrieve their pandemic flu plan from the stacks of useless bureaucratic clutter, and dust them off. Among the hundred or so pages of the Tennessee state plan, you will find the word, "Bonnaroo." Some don't find this surprising at all, and have said as much. Most, I would guess, never knew such a plan existed, never gave it a thought, and don't give a flying fluck about it now.
I've been accused as being "alarmist." Personally, I'm more curious than anything. Suppose there is a significant late-season flu event. If we have a Bonnaroo with dust-bowl conditions as in 2007, when people's respiratory tracts are already irritated, does that aggravate flu symptoms and increase communicability? People in this board expressed complaints of respiratory distress in 2007. What happens if you combine that with flu? Does Bonnaroo hand out free breathing masks with the guidebook at the gates?
Are there legal liabilities for contining an event during a bad flu season? Offhand, I'd say no. But, what if other large public gatherings are being canceled elsewhere? Specifically, what if other outdoor music festivals are being canceled? Do the producers ask the local or county government to make the decision if cancellation becomes a question? Does this absolve the producers of contractual legal obligations?
Recently, a young baby died while at an illegal child-care facility in Manchester, TN. Autopsy results are pending. *Hypothetically*, what if the child is found to have had H1N1? OK, I'm being alarmist now. I could dream up all kinds of conspiratorially hair-brained ideas. These are best left unspoken. Excuse me, I think I need to take my medication....

Ahh the deadly pork dust flu hybrid. Before I wasn't worried, but now I'm running for the hills!!!
What if this...? What if that...?
Kudos for curiousity, you make good points with this being rated at 4 out of 6 with cancelations being considered at 5 or 6 rating. However, I can't help but feel like I did at the beginning of this that this thing is just silly. Its the Flu... Bonnaroo will be just fine.

I too really think Bonnaroo will be just fine. It is such a massively big, fantastic, wonderful and historic festival that cancellation is unthinkable. I'm not being sarcastic, I'm being very honest.
What's weird is if you read the government plans for dealing with pandemic flu they call for measures and precautions that go way overboard in most people's opinions, beyond most people's imaginations. The plans themselves are alarmist, and paint a world drastically different from our normal experience.
These plans are almost science fiction in what they describe. And, these are *official* documents. Pandemic flu is such a rare event that few take it seriously, and rightly so. But, the flu virus doesn't give a hoot about what we think. It may even evolve and benefit from normal human behaviors; our predilection for living in large urban centers, our use of large, commercial livestock farming, our periodic migrations from scattered regions to gather and attend cultural events...
^We also might be hit by a meteor or rogue comet tomorrow. Or one of us might get run over by a trash truck. I still file this under things not to worry about because life is too short anyway.
I for one am glad that our government has made plans for public emergencies on *official* documents. That's what government is there for.
Sheesh, this thread is like a zombie. It keeps coming back no matter how many times we hijack it.
Typical behavior has been anticipated, and government planning has taken it into account. Viral evolution also has been shaped by and shapes human behaviors, including typical or predominate attitudes.
The question is, do we promote spread of the virus by continuing to behave "normally?" Will small or large changes in our behavior stifle virus spread? To be positive, if we all get exposed to this virus at Bonnaroo and get a mild flu, do we get some resistance to a mutation with higher mortality, as some suggest could happen with this virus? Infection could be a good thing in the long run. Individuals who attend large festivals gain a survival advantage. The virus shapes our species based on our music preference. We evolve into a festival-loving species.

If the human race encounters a virus powerful enough, all the planning and preparation in the world will not save us.
Cover your mouth when you sneeze, wash your hands, and enjoy the gift of life while it lasts.

When I heard about the sickness Friday night, I was hanging out with Gus, and I totally misinterpreted the info and thought that we were on the verge of an "I am Legend"-style zombie attack. I love zombie movies though, so I wasn't scared, I just thought it was reeeally funny. As soon as I woke up the next day, I looked at the news, knowing that I was just being silly the day before

Why have they put The WHO in charge of this? I mean, what the h3ll does Roger Daltry, Pete Townshend or Keith Moon know about this sh!t?
Actually the thing I worry about is the new snipe flu that will soon become a pandemic. The WHO needs all of you to go out and comb the woods for dead snipe, then using proper precautions mail them to the FBI for testing. Please everyone this could be life or death.
