Whatever you do. DO NOT... I repeat... DO NOT eat at the Shoneys thats like 2 or 3 exits north of Roo. That fricka frackin place has tricked me twice now. (Im admittedly not super coherent when leaving Roo which explains the accidental return trip). DAMN YOU SHONEYS!!!!!
I remember a discussion along these lines last year. Actually, it was more of a "Cracker Barrel vs. Waffle House" debate. I think Waffle House won out, but Cracker Barrel is still pretty awesome.
And being a true Southerner, I would choose Krystal over White Castle anyday (I think that was part of the aforementioned debate as well).

I'm a veggie, but have fond memories of fast food chicken.
If you're from the Northeast (or anywhere else that they don't have it)....you have to stop at a Chick-Fil-A for some nuggets. Fast food chicken has never been finer. Also, ask for the special sauce. Chick-Fil-A employees have to be the happiest & nicest fast food workers in the country and are usually willing to give you all kinds of sauces for no extra charge like other places do.
Sonic has always made me feel sick, but the drinks are well worth stopping there.
Waffle House hash browns are amaazzzzing. You'll be like, "IHOP who?" after dining there.
As far as Cracker Barrel goes, remember that nearly everything contains bacon stuff. Even a side of green beans (one would assume that they're safe) is drenched in bacon grease. I don't even trust the biscuits there haha. Other than that, I've heard good things about it from most people even though I won't eat there.

It is hard to deny the pleasures of Waffle Housing, but for me it only comes after a hard night out of partying, I would make it a post roo visit preferably at 3am.

I like the three veggie sides and cornbread at Cracker Barrel, too: mac-n-cheese, green beans, fried okra, cornbread and sweet tea. It's like being home again! ;D

since we come from the northeast, I get all excited when we're south enough to start seeing Cracker Barrels...the country fried steak, corn muffins and baked apples they have hit the spot every time. Waffle house is always a must as well--good lord breakfast has never tasted so good. in 07 we also hit up the O'Charley's right by the exit to the farm and it was pretty darn tasty if i do say so myself.
i tend to avoid sonic's now....like some of you, we got the commercials in NY all the time and the nearest actual sonic's locations are in either Canada or Virginia, so we were really excited to eat there. on the way back from Roo 08, we stopped for lunch at Sonic's and i got some chicken fingers in grease that must have been there for at least a month. i was violently sick for the next five hours, which was awful because we were in the middle of like nowhere in VA and there was really nothing we could do except keep driving, with me throwing up into a plastic bag and talking sh*t about how much i hated sonic burger and would never eat there again.
moral of my story: eat at chik-fil-a instead! ain't nothing like those waffle fries.
We always try to hit up something new every year we go....Waffle House one year, Sonic, and White Castle so we're trying to find something different this year as well. Never had Krystal or Bojangles. Its weird the things you take for granted like having a million cracker barrels around or a joe's crab shack

If you can stop in Bristol, TN/VA you MUST go to Pal's. I like the chili burger best. Their peachy tea and frenchy fries are amazing. And its super cheap.
^ I would just check out Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives with a trip of that magnitude.
And yeah, I remember the Waffle House vs. Cracker Barrel argument of last year. Dunno if my insides have yet forgiven me for eating at WH last year the night before we left fer 'Roo. But I do miss it. Gimme Cracker Barrel any day of the week though!
Okay, I have a friend from Atlanta and she talks about fried chicken & waffles...is Tennessee too far North (or not far enough South)? Does anyone know about this stuff?
I've personally never had chicken and waffles, but I've heard Muddea's is the place to go in Nashville for that. And if you like some hot chicken, try Prince's.

the best chicken & waffles meal i ever had in my life was at the Roscoe's in Long Beach, CA. We'd consumed a large amount of medical corn and walked over with our tummies growling for tasty eats. They made us wait for like half an hour, but when we finally got our food it was like heaven had come to the LBC. The perfect crispy chicken skin and the meat all succulent and tender underneath, taken with a bite of warm waffle and maple syrup (beats the hell out of a biscuit)...i get hungry now just thinking about it!!
That breakfast bar used to be killer, but I haven't been in a long time.
