I've personally never had chicken and waffles, but I've heard Muddea's is the place to go in Nashville for that. And if you like some hot chicken, try Prince's.
Thanks! Gonna have to try this one out. It's about an hour to Nashville from the farm, yeah? I'm sure with enough corn and visions of fried chicken and waffles I can convince all of the heads in my car to make the detour.
I would just stop at anything that says Fried Chicken and Trout ( catfish is also acceptable ) Maryland has many of these, for some reason. They are pretty good. And if anything stop in Washington if your driving that way and check out a lot of the scene there.

Monell's is awesome. They give you fried chicken at breakfast, and I mean real fried chicken!

I think this goes back to the fried chicken and waffles discussion, a must have if you find it anywhere in the south.
If you coming through Knoxville, you should stop at the Original Freezo, possibly the finest restaurant of this or any generation...
I lived in Knoxville for 20 some years, and I never went there. Drove past it a few times, but never stopped. Maybe I'll have to go next time I visit the family.
Anyone who drives through Atlanta should go to The Varsity by Georgia Tech.
I really wanted to like the Varsity (and it certainly is an institution), but I just couldn't get into it. It was fine, but didn't get me terribly excited. For my money, if you're going to stop at one place in Atlanta, I'd go to Fat Matt's (www.fatmattsribshack.com/)

I grew up in Oak Ridge. Lived in Knoxville in college and live in Clinton now. I have never heard of this place. Tell me more.
What's the name of the soul food place in East Knoxville on Magnolia? It's in an old Taco Bell painted pink.
If you go through Knoxville, Tomato Head and Sunspot are both good for the veggie people out there.
Cracker Barrel has a higher quality food. Waffle House is better for the experience especially late night.
Shoney's vary by location. Some are good. Some are disgusting.
I can totally relate to the can of bacon fat. My grandma had a fancy one that had a strainer on top, so the bacon bits wouldn't get in your fat. Apparently, this was a very important part of it.
I can't vouch for the place, but Back Room BBQ in Knoxville is supposed to be good. I have always felt Calhoun's is overrated.
anyone know where I can get some good BBQ between ny and tn??
I do know that my favorite BBQ I've ever had was in Russellville, KY... Roy's Pit. I doubt you'll be going through R-ville, however, as it's over an hour away from any interstate.

Pixie, there's a breakfast spot in Williamsburg that makes a pretty fantastic chicken and waffles. You should check it out if you're ever in the hood, it's called Jimmy's Diner. I always make sure they slather those bad boys in a little extra gravy.
6/18: Phish in Hartford 6/25: Phish in Camden 7/2-7/4: Nateva 7/17: God Street Wine at Irving Plaza 7/23-7/25: String Cheese at Red Rocks!! 8/17-8/18: Phish at Jones Beach 9/3: Rush at PNC
This Bonnaroo lineup is in dire need of some Rush.

we looked for bbq in our gps. avoided the multiples (chain) and looked to names like "fat bob" or anything with the word "shack" in the title...
Haha! Those seem to be good criteria! I've mentioned it already a few posts ago, but my favorite bbq place in Atlanta (I might even go so far as to say it's my favorite place to eat in Atlanta, definitely in the top 5 anyway) is Fat Matt's Rib Shack. They have the most amazing ribs ever, and their chicken also is fantastic. (The only thing I've had there that I wasn't crazy about was the pulled pork sandwich, but the ribs and chicken are so good that they more than make up for that.) They do rum baked beans that are to-die-for. Also, the downside of Fat Matt's used to be that baked beans and potato salad were the only sides, but last time I was there they had added macaroni (unbelieveable good) and collared greens (still need to try these).
On chicken and waffles, I've never actually had them, but I have been to Gladys Knight and Ron Wynan's Chicken and Waffles in Atlanta a couple of times, and I would definitely recommend the place to anyone who's down here.

Gladys Knight has a chicken & waffle restaurant?!@#
If you are in ATL and just aren't in the mood for BBQ....check out The Vortex...best Burgers in town! And one of the best selections of beer in town too...on tap AND bottles! And you get a choice of french fries, hand made onion rings, sweet potatoe fries or friend zucchini for a side with any of the INCREDIBLE burgers or sandwiches....and I am NOT a huge burger fan but even I can't resist getting a burger at The Vortex...with a side of the fried zucchini.....reasonable prices and two locations....Five Points and Midtown...I prefer the original location in Five Points (near Criminal Records and Junkman's Daughter) but I have heard the Midtown location is about equal quality......

Yep! www.gladysandron.net/ Soooooo good! There's almost always a huge line of people outside waiting to get in, but it's worth the wait.

Agreed! Vortex is yummy! And the Midtown location has a comedy club attached to it now, so we are going there in a couple of weeks to see Doug Benson.
Oddly, I rarely actually get burgers there anymore. The burgers are awesome, but their other food is great too. (Last time, I had a Club Deluxe, and it was amazing!) The food is equally good both places, and I've had good service at the Midtown one, but, in general, I've had better service at the Little Five Points location. Plus, it's just a more fun area of town with better shopping nearby.
if anyone is in five points in east nashville, we have a hotdog place thats set up in a VW bus. its called I Dream Of Weenie....its the official weinery of east nashville. makes a cute cheap stop over if you are hanging out in five points!!!!
