The bedroom at my grandmother's house used for storage (which later became my room, hehe). It was full of old stuff of her parents' and smelled like moth balls. Then again, her whole house smelled like that. At my other grandmother's place there was a doll/stuff animal monkey from the 1960s that had belonged to my uncle. Had a horrible fucked up face that I didn't like AT ALL.
the huge basement at my parents house. it was old, dark and damp filled with old bikes, cob webs and toys from my older brothers and sister. there just a few hanging light bulbs in the back and near the washer and dryer. there was a huge cold storage cut into the wall under the stairs. unfortunately the light switch was at the bottom of the stairs. i was sure every time i turned it off and went upstairs something was going to grab me from behind or pull me under the stairs into that hole in the wall.

Yeah, dark, damp basements are full of terror - for youngsters and adults, in some cases. I hated my damp, spider-filled earthen basement, but thankfully I was able to sell my house last year. Whew. (Wipes forehead after briefly reliving the memory of descending the steps into said basement).

Agreed. I don't have a basement but I have a crawlspace that's full of those spider-cricket things.
F*ck those things.

I watched Poltergeist as a child and had a fear of static-y televisions for a long time. I can remember freaking when the cable would go out. I also was scared to death by the Thriller video and to this day get nightmares when I watch anything with zombies in it. People dressed in zombie costumes? No problem. Zombie movies? Fuck no!
Ok, so most of you "kids" won't remember this, but there used to be this commercial where the toilet was alive. It was green and mean and had HUGE teeth. I was scared to death of the toilet for forever because of that. I would open the lid, peak under the rim, check it out thoroughly before ever sitting down when I was a kid. My mom has pics of me sitting outside the bathroom crying because of the trauma this stupid commercial caused me - she thinks this is HI-larious.
I've been known to have flashbacks while extremely intoxicated.
/nothing like having to explain a deep-seated fear of the toilet to your friends.
//this is one of the reasons I go VIP, porta-potties scare the BEJEEBUS out of me. There could be all kinds of stuff down there just waiting to bite me!

When I lived in Knoxville, we had a house on a hill with a basement that flooded fairly regularly. One time, I had to boot up and head down there near midnight after a power outage.
Have you ever seen the movie "Pitch Black?" I swear there were 300-400 cave crickets when I turned on the light. Screamed like a little girl...
UGH. They get nastier in the winter. They are creeping their way into my house with New York attitudes. They just look at me and don't really care if I'm there or not.

Ugh. There are only two kinds of bugs that really freak me out. These nasty little things and roaches. We live in a pre-1900 home with a cellar so there is no shortage of these disgusting freaks of nature.
I refuse to go into my basement as well. My husband yells at me. Then he goes into the basement.
Like you two get in an argument then he retreats to the basement because you won't follow? There's something either cowardly or awesome about that tactic.
But no. Everytime I need something from the basement I ask him to go down there. Then he yells at me for being a baby and something about overcoming my fears and then he goes into the basement to retrive what I asked for. It's usually meat from our freezer so he kind of has to if he wants to eat.
Has anyone else seen that US Postal Service commercial with the scary clown doll thing? The family is huddled outside the door, looking in to the house, and the post man dude comes up and asks what's up. They want to return the scary clown doll but no one wants to go inside and get it. And the next thing you know, it's like right beside them.
I want you all to know that commercial terrifies me.

NO! I hate that thing! I hate clowns though. They freak me out.
gardenfresh, I have totally watched "Killer Clowns from Outerspace". It's hilarious! I mean, they capture people in cotton candy cocoons!
GL, clowns that are not alive (such as dolls and the like) scare me more than people dressed as clowns.
Don't get me started on how much puppets freak me out. 1) What was that movie from a couple years ago about those puppets that were possessed by the evil dead woman? Not Puppet Master. It was within the last 3 or 4 years. The trailer scared the crap out of me. 2) At Abra's parents house, I watched this thing on showtime (i think). It was a cheesy sci-fi series and the episode was about a doctor who made a robot then put his dead son's personality in it. Over the course of the episode, the robot went crazy because it couldn't reconcile being a human in a robot body. I was paralyzed with fear. I had nightmares about it. Seriously.

THIS!
I was TERRIFIED of the toilets/flushing them as a kid. My 6-year old justification decided that if I didn't make it back to my bedroom and hop on my bed (for protection, of course) by the time the toilet was done flushing, something terrible would happen. I don't even think I knew what "would happen", just that one time I didn't make it back to the safety of my bed and I wailed like a banshee.
My pops also ruined the fun out of getting scared. I used to enjoy scary movies, haunted houses and whatnot but he had this warewolf mask he'd put on to scare my brother and me. It worked every time.
