That doesn't make an argument that Muse could headline. Beasties, NIN, David Byrne, and Wilco would all have been billed ahead of Muse this year. I don't even know if they would have been billed ahead of Volta at 13.

I wasn't trying to make an argument that Muse could headline. Just giving my thoughts on why NIN weren't given headliner status. I personally don't think Muse would headline......I just expect them to be on the farm soon.
i was huge in to muse for years. Still to this day their show at nashville war was one of the best ive seen. Their energy is superb and YES i have been expecting them at the farm(at least since 06). They headlined Glastonbury in 04 with Paul and Oasis. now i know they are not as big here as across the pond but they are established and have enough of following to at the very least have a late night WHICH. One of my favorite DVDs is Muse live at Wembley. Their lights would be insane on the What but thats a different story.. I would like to just see their name on the bill first. When that day happens i will be a happy man
I would love to see Muse on the farm but I really wouldn't wanna see them as headliners. Not that they aren't one of my favorite bands but there are so many other bands I'd rather see as headliners....plus, I tend to enjoy the shows in the tents more than the ones on the What. I guess I just like the shows with the smaller crowds. They would defintiely have to be a late night show though. I saw them two years ago in a larger indoor venue and I wasn't on the floor so it wasn't as enjoyable as it could be. Plus Dallas had his arm in a sling b/c it was right after his shoulder surgery and we couldn't go wild. I would really like to see them again under different circumstances.

thinking mars volta would be billed over muse is straight crazy.

It is true that Muse was 4th on the lineup for Lollapalooza in 2007...but do you know who was 3rd? Ben Harper (12th on Bonnaroo '09 lineup). I don't believe Muse has gotten any bigger since then. Muse probably would have been around where TMV or TVOTR were on this year's lineup, and most certainly would not have been ahead of Wilco.
I definitely would not object to having Muse at Roo, I just think you might be a little delusional about their stature.

I completely reject the notion that Wilco would appear over Muse simply because Ben Harper did in 2007. I am not saying you are not entitled to your opinion, but I do think that this is way too weak to actually change mine.
I find it hard to believe that this is a no doubter that they would be. I said questionable and I mean that.
If Muse and Wilco were to play next year, I do believe Muse would be billed higher. "Delusional" or not.

Harper and the Innocent Criminals>Harper and R7 But how about Muse Friday Which late-night. That slot is a little less of a big deal as Saturday night. Meaning there would be 3 headliners, 3 pre's, and Saturday late-night that could be higher on the lineup. Muse as the 8th band on the lineup wouldn't be bad imo and I'm not a Muse fan.
Well, Muse is roughly about as big as Wilco (in the US, at least), or maybe even a bit bigger. I think they'll probably get similar billing if they ever play Roo - not a headliner, but listed somewhere in the first five non-headliners on the lineup. I'm thinking they'd be either a What Stage pre-headliner, or a Which Stage late night.
I'd be happy to see them play Roo one year, and they'd certainly put on a great show... but I already saw them two summers ago, and considering their time slot would undoubtedly have a ton of horrid conflicts, I'd probably check out someone else instead. With the exception of a select few bands who are really in their element in a live setting and tend to do something unique at each show (MMJ, Radiohead, etc), I will almost always go with the act I haven't seen, assuming I like each one equally.

I admit that the substance of this discussion is completely relative, and the side you take will most likely come down to which band you like more, but Muse is not bigger than Wilco in the U.S. I will concede that Muse is bigger than Wilco in jolly old England, but Wilco is an American institution. Muse used to open for My Chemical Romance, for Christ's sake. I've never seen Muse live, and have seen Wilco live many times, so maybe my perspective is biased. But you know what isn't biased? USA! USA! USA!

enough said
Muse is probably bigger than Wilco (not necessarily better, just more popular) in the US. However, Muse has a WAY bigger fan base in England then Wilco in the US or overseas or Wilco and Tweedy solo or anything else put together.. Overall I would say they are a bigger band.

id have to say that Muse is a bigger name through out the world and the US. among Bonnaroo(and festival) goers Wilco might be the bigger name, but there are a lot of people who have never even heard the name Wilco.
Muse on the other hand has had mass appeal through a few singles and some songs in movies.
Your welcome to debate whose better(id go with Muse), but i think as far as popularity Muse the bigger name, and i dont really know if its close.

Not saying that Muse could headline Bonnaroo because they certainly can't, but they are without a doubt bigger than Wilco in the US. They would be perfect though in the spot that NIN got this year.
Radiohead Rage Against the Machine Nine Inch Nails Kanye West Wilco
Muse was 4th in 07. Kanye and Wilco would have likely been billed above Harper. They ARE NOT without a doubt bigger in the US. It's completely debatable.
I consider myself a pretty big Muse fan but they are gonna have to do better than Freddie Mercury covers if they wanna be as big in the US as they are in UK.

While I can't debate who is bigger between Muse and Wilco, Muse definitely puts on a more headliner like show in terms of productions and lights. Wilco is lacking in that regard, although I doubt it would matter, their music would not be improved upon by lasers.
They would actually be better than muse in that respect if they only played Spiders (Kidsmoke) and Bull Black Nova with 10 minute Nels Cline solos on each. But yeah ill give the Muse fans that, they are a better night themed band than Wilco.

Muse may be more popular in the US but i'm betting that Wilco has more fans in the Bonnaroo crowd. i'd love to see a late night Muse set on the which stage though. you'd have to go back a few years to find a headliner that couldn't fill an arena in your average metropolitan area. that probably won't change next year.

i agree completely with this. overall mass appeal Muse is bigger, Bonnaroo/Festival crowd(those on this board) theres more Wilco fans.

What's with the hate for Queen? You say it as if it's cheesy or lame or something. I encourage bands I like to sound like Queen. They are fucking legit. And so is Muse.

I was looking at the historical touring data on the Muse page. When playing solo in the US they play at 10-15000 person venues. That is pretty impressive, and larger than I thought, however it is nowhere near what a Bonnaroo headliner can sell. Even WSP can sell 35-40k on their own, Muse is nothing like that big. Also I noticed they are on tour opening for U2 right now, this should also tell you something, bands that can headline Bonnaroo do not typically spend the year prior playing 45 minute sets in front of fans that mostly do not care or, have not showed up yet.
