So I do alot of traveling and going to shows in other towns. It keeps me sane. Right now though my favorite venue is in Richmond,VA. My hometown. Its called The National.
I like the calender and the beer selection and love the back alley smoking section with adjacent bar.
It's not too big, not too small. One of my favorite things about it is that it's got riser/platform things along the walls, so that, even if you are further back, you can still see the stage (which is extra good for me because I'm short; was especially important when I saw Zappa Plays Zappa there because I was by myself and I kept losing my spot because I had to go get more beer. . The beer selection is not fantastic, but it's not bad, and their prices are a hell of a lot better than the Tabernacle's. They have a pretty good show selection, and the ticket prices are usually not too bad.
I do a lot of traveling for shows, too, and I'd have to say that as of right now, my favorites are The Pabst in Milwaukee and The Granada in Dallas. Outdoors, I love Wolf Trap in VA.

I must say that The National was the absolute perfect venue to see Andrew Bird in my opinion. The whole venue seemed to match his style and his music just perfectly. I think that venue gets my vote as well, although I haven't been to nearly as many venues as others so my opinion is somewhat narrowed.
Outdoors I still gotta go with the Charlottesville Pavilion.
Also, major props to the Spectrum in Philly. It's about to be torn down since they built a bigger and better one right next to it.. but the energy that can be created within those walls is just unfathomable.
I generally prefer outdoor venues over indoor ones, even if the sound suffers a bit. I so want to see a show at Red Rocks, but it's on the other side of the country, and the only time I've ever visited Colorado was in the middle of winter.
I love Higher Ground Ballroom in South Burlington, VT. It's a medium-sized club (capacity 600), but it gets some decent-sized acts. Upcoming shows on their calendar include Les Claypool, Mos Def, Method Man/Redman/Ghostface, Old Crow Medicine Show, Xavier Rudd and others.
The House of Blues in Boston is great as well - still fairly small (capacity 2,500) and gets some pretty big names. I haven't got my tickets for either one yet, but there are two shows in the fall that I'm really hoping to go to - #1 Porcupine Tree, and #2 The Psychedelic Furs/Happy Mondays.
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver
As far as indoor venues, my favorite would probably have to be Irving Plaza in NYC. Terminal 5, and The Bowery Ballroom are tied for second. Oh and I can't forget about the world famous MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, the sound is just incredible there.
As far as outdoor venues go I've only been to 2. PNC Bank Arts Center is nice, but Jones Beach Theater sucks.

bank of america pavillion. on the harbor in boston. good views from the stage anywhere in the venue including the beer lines. key shows: raconteurs, wsp, csn
also happens to be across the street from where i work and less than 1.5 miles from my apartment
6/18: Phish in Hartford 6/25: Phish in Camden 7/2-7/4: Nateva 7/17: God Street Wine at Irving Plaza 7/23-7/25: String Cheese at Red Rocks!! 8/17-8/18: Phish at Jones Beach 9/3: Rush at PNC
This Bonnaroo lineup is in dire need of some Rush.
I really miss the 9:30 Club back home in DC. Always had good acts comin' through, easy to get to, and great sound (most of the time). Other favorites would be Fletcher's up in Baltimore, MD; Green(e?) Street in Greensboro, NC; and my local favorite The Brewery here in Raleigh.
Royal Albert Arms in Winnipeg. Up there with CBGBs and The Marquee as far as punk rock bars go. Wicked local bands 3 or 4 nights a week with some awesome touring bands thrown in

I personally like indoor shows at small clubs for the intimacy. I'm pretty close to Deer Creek which is a greaqt venue, but getting in and out of that place is miserable if you're not camping.
The Gorge is my favotire outdoor venue by far. Overlooking the Columbia River with great places to camp near by. You can't beat it. Although I've yet to venture to Red Rocks.
