Lollapalooza has added The Yeah Yeah Yeahs for Saturday night to cover the spot now vacated by The Beastie Boys. With Tool basically recycling their 2007 show and Beasties having to cancel due to MCA... I think Lolla is done city for me. What do you guys think about this?
Are the yeah yeah yeahs really headliner material for a fest that size? I guess with it being so soon, they kind of have to take what they can get, though.

I agree about YYYs not being headliner material. I mean they've only put out three albums. Does that really justify a headlining spot? I was only going to be able to make it to the Saturday of Lolla and now Im pretty sure that money is going to be spent on the Fall Phish tour.
I would be pretty irritated if I had tickets to a festival and that was the swap they pulled on me. At the end of the day it costs probably close to a million bucks for the beasties, it is maybe 150k for the YYY's. There are plenty of bands out there they could have gotten that would be a much more appropriate replacement. Heck if worse came to worst they could have pulled a Bonnaroo and gotten WSP.
From the vids I've seen (especially the most recent ones from Mile High) Tool is NOT just recylcing their 2007 show. Sure, they might not have any new songs, but they have new footage and even more ridiculous looking images on their screens than in 2007. I for one will be buying a day pass on saturday of lollapalooza just for the Tool show and Perry Farrell and Special Guest.
I really couldn't care less if Tool has changed the visuals. I saw 3 shows from the 2007 tour and I dont really want to see the same setlist regardless of whether or not Adam has some new vids and lights lined up. That being said I LOVE Tool. One of my top bands of all time but Ive seen them 8 times over the years and they're going to have to do more to get me to a show in the same year as a Phish reunion. Not to mention the countless great things that are available right now live music wise.
Hey itrainmonkeys.... did you see that Wilco was added to Farm Aid? The idea of Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Dave and Tim, and Wilco trumps a one day pass for Lolla to me.
lol dude if they are one of your top bands of all time why would they have to 'do more'? I for one would go see them at least once or twice a year even if they played the same set list with no screens or visuals at all. I feel that way about my top 3 or 4 favorite bands...as long as I get to see them, thats what I care about. Seeing new nuts is of course awesome, but as for Tool and Rage (as they are my two fav bands who still play shows) i would go see em even no matter what.
Now, back on topic, YYY's=BB? wtf is wrong with this picture
edit: well Rage plays a couple one-off shows a year...not really touring
^^^ Nope. Doesnt fly. A band like Tool can do more to evolve their show. You cant be an avant garde, envelope pushing live band and at the same time use the same setlist for a few years and tours. Just because a band is a favorite of mine doesnt mean Im jaded enough to let them get away with recycling a setlist repeatedly. The last two times Ive seen Rage (Alpine, and Minneapolis) they played different setlists and those guys havent released a studio album in 10 years. Theres no excuse for a band with the talent and creativity of Tool to reuse a setlist on tours seperated by a couple years. Its like in Bittersweet Motel when Todd Phillips is having Trey read bad show reviews and the one article says something to the affect that Phish was to a point that they could urinate in the ears of their listeners every night and the audience would be there to happily lap it up and record it. Do I think Tool is one of the greatest bands to ever play music? Most definitely. Will I be there to buy ANYTHING they ever release? Yes. Will I go see them repeatedly play the same show? No. They have a catolog of 4 full albums, the Opiate EP, and the Salival box set. Surely they can do more than switch Flood and Aenima on various nights and make some new videos.
I definitely understand what you are saying. Tool is capable of doing ALOT more than they've showed these past few years...but, in their defense, I saw them 3 times in 07. I dont think I ever heard the same version of Stinkfist. when I saw them in Huntington Danny Carey and the drummer from Big Business (who is pretty good by the way) spent at least 15 minutes havin a badass drum-off that went straight into lateralus. Also got an extended version of Right In Two that night. So what I'm saying is, they might have the same set list or whatever..but they always have some kind of surprise for (what seems like) every show, or almost every show. I definitely dont think they just 'recycle' the same show over and over
I agree with what you're saying. It was cool @ Bonnaroo to see Tom Morello come out for Lateralus. Melt Banana's drummer playing with Danny later that tour was not very impressive to me but that was because he wasnt a great drummer not because it wasnt a cool idea. The extended Stinkfist is also very cool. BUT.... Gimme "The Grudge" or "Parabol/Parabola" from Lateralus, "No Quarter" or even the reworked "Pushit" from Salival. Toss in an old favorite now and again "Opiate", "Eulogy", "Prison Sex", or even a massive show ending "Third Eye". I appreciate the fact that Tool is not the kind of band that just gets into a groove in the key of "D" and just wanks around for awhile aimlessly. Their instrumental jams are very precise and constructed and I love that. I just want to hear them do that with different songs.
oh fuck yea dude, if ur asking me what i'd rather see....Parabola has been my #1 song i've wanted to hear at every show. Would I lose my gourd if they launched into Eulogy or H. or even hush? FUCK YEAH. but its just not happenin. That's tool for ya

anyone whose seen the yeah yeah yeahs anywhere besides the which stage knows that they are on their way to becoming a big headliner. this might be the set everyone will be talking about when lolla is over.
lolla didn't get the shaft, they gave it. heres to hoping yyy gives a show that makes up for it.
You guys do realize that Lollapalooza has dueling headliners right? So it's not exactly a fair comparison to say that APW outdid Lolla on replacing the Beasties, because Jay-Z will be the only headliner at APW that night, while Lolla still has Tool the same night.

^^I don't think that Tool playing the same night has anything to do with the replacement of the Beasties though. The fact is, they took a band who had to pull out and replaced them with a completely different genre band which typically has a slightly different fanbase, and up to date has played at a much lower caliber than the Beastie Boys. Sure, Tool is playing... but everyone who bought a ticket for the Beastie Boys cannot really be comforted by that fact so much.
So lineups and scheduling aside, it is perfectly fair to say that APW stomped Lolla's ass when it comes to replacing the Beasties I think

except for people that would much rather see yeah yeah yeahs.

I'd agree - and I'd actually say that I slightly prefer the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to Jay-Z, at least as far as you can compare two completely different styles of music (I love them both, though). But at Roo this year, Yeah Yeah Yeahs were only a pre-pre-headliner on the second largest stage. Jay-Z, however, is quite possibly the biggest rapper in the world and would almost certainly headline Roo if he ever plays (I think he might even be a bit too big for the Kanye slot). Lollapalooza is a lot more comparable to Bonnaroo in terms of scale as well, so I would have imagined they'd land the bigger name.
Also, at least Jay-Z is still the same genre of music - granted, he's at the completely opposite end of the hip-hop spectrum than the Beastie Boys, but they're both still hip-hop nevertheless. Yeah Yeah Yeahs don't really sound anything like the Beastie Boys, besides the fact that they both clearly draw a lot of influence from early punk bands.

Seriously, can the Beasties be really be replaced? I think the Yeah Yeah Yeah's are a good last minute fill in but seriously...not even on the same level.

"Greatest Rapper Alive". Loved the Beasties show @ Roo but Ive seen Jay-Z 3 times (Puff Daddy & The Family Tour, Hard Knock Life Tour, and Rock The Mic Tour all in St. Louis) and its hands down the best show in hip hop. Go check out the DVD/Bluray of "Fade To Black" for further proof. He blows the roof off of MSG. Mike D even shows up @ Rick Rubin's studio during the recording of "99 Problems".
